Okay... I live in Fuquay ... and there is an ABC store over by sheetz... Really. You don't want it near churches or day cares... you all sound so Ridiculous!!! If some one wants to buy lotto their going to drive and find a store with it, if some one wants alcohol they will drive to go get it.... YOU MAKE IT SOUND LIKE OUR TOWN HAS NO SELF CONTROL... GROW UP !!!

    "
It's hard for me to understand why anyone would want more liquor stores?" -willie 11

Convenience. Jeez, willie, what kind of ECU'er are you?

If the puritan nannies in FV prevail, in the future their karma will cause either an opium den or a marijuana dispensary to go in the location slated for ABC. For cryin' out loud, people, it's a retail store with no consumption, not a nekkid bar or an internet cafe.

  • superman Feb 25, 11:40 a.m.

Forget about building the ABC store. Build another big church. Keep it open 24/7 for those people in Fuquay. They have way too much time on their hands and they should be in church.

  • readme Feb 25, 10:48 a.m.

What a complete joke. Wrong on so many levels, both from the left and the right. The ABC program is a joke. Privatize it! But also a joke is not allowing it near a school or a church. As long as the land is zoned for commercial, any retail outlet should be allowed.

  • Crumps Br0ther Feb 25, 9:35 a.m.

This is why the stores shouldnt be state run. Its ridiculous! Bev had a chance to fix that and didnt, another FAIL. Blues are completely silly

I meant Blue Laws are completely silly

  • Crumps Br0ther Feb 25, 9:33 a.m.

Im sure the teachers are bummed. I know a lot of them that drink. cant say I blame em, after putting up with your precious snow flakes all day, I probably would too!

C'mon FV toughen up. I have some friends who live in Branson, MO the buckle of the Bible Belt(a state that doesnt have state run liquor stores by the way)and there is sex shop across the street from a church. Ya know what the church does? They pray that the place will either close or move, they didnt go crying to the city.

  • EnoughWhiningAlready Feb 22, 7:59 p.m.

"they say will be too close to a church and an elementary school"

I'm sure the clerks would check the ID's of anyone looking 10 or younger........and the ABC's aren't open on Sunday's when the largest church services are in progress. Get serious, Fuquay Folks.

  • dev8me Feb 22, 7:36 p.m.

oooohhh like churchgoers, kindergartners, school kids will all flock in mass to buy liquor... get real, stop trying to mothering everyone

  • tartar1 Feb 22, 6:52 p.m.

This is a great example of how Holly Springs and Apex have both leaped Fuquay in growth. Fuquay has fought growth for years and have let small town Holly Springs outgrow them. smh. Glad I moved away from there years ago

  • jimcool59 Feb 22, 6:34 p.m.

Do these rebel rousers know that some people who live 40 ft. from a church or school drive spirts. There are people who go to church and drink spirts. same as schools too.

  • brookemarbell Feb 22, 6:07 p.m.

And you who are attacking the church, are just as bad as those attacking the store. Don't think you are being progressive and intelligent by bashing people with faith, although some might be a little strange.

  • brookemarbell Feb 22, 5:56 p.m.

Last time I checked you had to be 21 to buy liquor. Don't think this is going to cause children to drink. And I'm a church goer and I choose to drink some beer sometimes. I don't see how the store will affect the church people. Children choose not to drink because their parents teach them. And if adults want to drink, its their business and they will get it somewhere. The closer to home thebetter, don't you think. People, there are worst problems. Teach your children and stay in their business to prevent underage drinking.

  • disgusted2010 Feb 22, 5:25 p.m.

Take a look at this brochure from the NC ABC. NC is a control state, which means the state/city/county owns and runs the ABC stores.

No ABC stores are owned by the state. They are owned by local ABC boards, which are LOCAL, not STATE.

Superman wrote on February 22, 2013 5:01 p.m.If you dont own the land--you have no right to determine how the land is going to be used as long as it meets legal requirements.

That actually is not true superman. We decide as a community, by means of our elected representatives what we will and will not allow to be built. The people just need to pay attention to what is on the agenda and show up to the meetings when these things are going to be discussed. Many a business has been denied because "the people" stood up against it.

If your elected officials don't want to listen, run for office yourself. They were elected to represent you not there own interests.

"OH NO! People that go to church can't drink? The daycare kids may start drinking? GROW UP FUQUAY!!!" Karen Bloom

I moved to Fuquay in 1988 when it was just a two lane highway town. Where everyone knew one another and it had an almost Mayberry feel. Today, that feel is gone, but I suspect that a lot of people want to keep a hold of what remains of it. It's funny to me though because there's an ABC store about a mile down the road from where they want to build. But, where it's at now there's not a church/childcare business/or neighborhood.

  • andy2 Feb 22, 5:11 p.m.

The ABC store is a joke and should be abolished. This is an area where privatization would be good. The fact is when the economy is bad people want to get messed up. Build the stinkin' store already!

  • superman Feb 22, 5:01 p.m.

I wouldnt want to live near a day care center or a church. Do I have the right to ask them to build somewhere where else. If you dont own the land--you have no right to determine how the land is going to be used as long as it meets legal requirements. People objecting just have too much time on their hands. They should be looking for a place that they think is more suitable for them to live.

  • sunshine1040 Feb 22, 5:00 p.m.

Why is the state selling a product that kills many of our citizens. They made tobacco use illegal in many areasand if it is not an adult based business then why are children not allowed to buy it

  • whatelseisnew Feb 22, 4:56 p.m.

" If you want to improve society restrict the building of churches."

If you want to improve society, quit building public schools. I have yet to be harmed by a CHURCH, but I have been seriously harmed by people that believe themselves to be progressive and of course much more educated than the next person. These are the kinds of folks that come up with things like Sterilization programs for those they deem should not have children.

  • whatelseisnew Feb 22, 4:54 p.m.

Actually is is a good spot. Once those poor kids suffer through a day of Public School they likely need a drink. Having it convenient to the Church and the Senior center is a big plus as well.

  • chippers Feb 22, 4:50 p.m.

Liquor sales should be deregulated in NC so that it can be sold in grocery stores/gas stations and it should be able to be sold on Sunday. If you want to improve society restrict the building of churches.

  • NCSU84 Feb 22, 4:49 p.m.

Build the ABC store. It will be good for the local economy. The retire folks will like the easy access to it via walking. I see it as a win win situation for the town of F-V!

  • tactics55 Feb 22, 4:44 p.m.

I am not sure I can even begin to understand the thought processes of some people. This is the most ridiculous story and I would not call this news. Come on WRAL you have got to be kidding me. What you get a call that a hand full of people are worked up about a liquor store and try to make it a story by adding the Town Commissioner is on the ABC Board. Who cares!! ABC stores are owned by the county and the members of the board do not get paid a salary. NC is a control state and has all kinds of rules regarding ABC stores hours, loitering and on sight consumption. If this was a restaurant that served that evil liquor I bet the neighbors would love it. Too much drama!!!

  • NiceNSmooth Feb 22, 4:41 p.m.

    There’s a day-care center. There’s a church. There’s a senior center.”

location, location, location!! Sounds like this place will be in a great location for business

  • batcave Feb 22, 4:40 p.m.

Religious people are only tolerant if you believe the same thing. Kind of like liberals , just the other end of the spectrum.
Liquor stores are indeed family friendly, lots of families have been started after a trip to the liquor store.

  • Willie_11 Feb 22, 4:33 p.m.

I thought the religious people were the all tolerant ones - vinylcarwraps23

The Bible commands to refrain from activities that harm your body. Liquor is quicker and therefore access to it should be regulated.

It's hard for me to understand why anyone would want more liquor stores?

  • prodigalrn Feb 22, 4:33 p.m.

I thought the religiou people were the all tolerant ones. If you dont drink alcohol then dont stop there. I dont like church so I dont stop there. I wouldtn say dont build that church here. Im still trying to figure out why there are so many churches for one God.

Religious people are only tolerant if you believe the same thing. If you don't, then not so much. That's why there are so many churches, no-one can get people to be more tolerant and just chill.

  • prodigalrn Feb 22, 4:31 p.m.

Know the difference between a Methodist and a Baptist?

The Methodist will speak to you at the liquor store.

The Baptist will say, "Oh no, I was just getting boxes out back of the store, I'm moving! That's the only reason I was there". LOL

  • atheistswillrule Feb 22, 4:30 p.m.

I would think the people at the senior center would be all in favor of it!

  • sandramblock Feb 22, 4:28 p.m.

How does a retail store impact a church, school and senior center? If you don't want what's inside, stay outside. I don't like guns, so I don't go into gun stores and they don't come outside looking for me. nor would the staff of the ABC store attempt to sell their product to the children, churchgoers and seniors outside of thier business. I am a senior and I live in Fuquay, yet this does not offend me.

  • 3779LRRP Feb 22, 4:17 p.m.

Fret not church goers. That evil ole likker store will not be open on Sunday. You don't have to be scared of it. Nor do you have to patronize it during the week. Quitcherbellyaching!

  • karenbloom Feb 22, 4:16 p.m.

OH NO! People that go to church can't drink? The daycare kids may start drinking? GROW UP FUQUAY!!!

  • Road-wearier Feb 22, 4:15 p.m.

Amazing. Because the mere presence of a liquor store will lead to the drunks barging into the school and church on a whiskey fueled rampage. Seriously people - get a grip. Don't get offended by common things like stores.

  • cocker_mom Feb 22, 4:13 p.m.

Apparently, there's a large concern about 5-10 year olds grabbing a fifth of scotch at recess, or Wednesday night Bible study getting a little rowdy. Who knew?

  • SueInNC Feb 22, 4:12 p.m.

The location they're complaining about is approximately 1/4 of a mile (or less?!) from the EXISTING ABC Liquor Store. Some people complain just for the sake of complaining.

  • Local Geek Feb 22, 4:09 p.m.

What is this, the 19th century?

Seriously, people, if you don't like alcohol, don't buy it. To the rest of us, it's not the evil that you make it out to be.

    Get over yourselves.

  • rocket Feb 22, 4:09 p.m.

"Wrong, ABC Stores are NOT owned by the state."

Then who owns them? They are not private.

  • kimisufu Feb 22, 4:07 p.m.

    It will still get built.

  • disgusted2010 Feb 22, 4:04 p.m.

Well, OBVIOUSLY, it would be WRONG to let an evil liquor store go near a ... wait a second--the ABC stores are LEGAL, right? And they're owned by the STATE, right?

Wrong, ABC Stores are NOT owned by the state.

  • FourAutumn Feb 22, 4:04 p.m.

    Wow...near a school and a church.

    Scary stuff.

  • awr117 Feb 22, 4:02 p.m.

Seriously, people complain of these things? What about beer and wine in grocery stores?

  • Fun Feb 22, 4:01 p.m.

Fuquay...lets see, no liquior stores, gun range harrassment, and works to kill off private citzens sponsoring of sports/athletic leagues for kids-- Socialism is spreading folks!

  • godnessgracious2 Feb 22, 3:58 p.m.

Some people obviously don't have any real problems to worry about. Too close to a church? Give me a break, you people are ridiculous.

  • bobbobson23 Feb 22, 3:57 p.m.

So they're saying no because of competition?

  • birkie74693 Feb 22, 3:51 p.m.

Well, OBVIOUSLY, it would be WRONG to let an evil liquor store go near a ... wait a second--the ABC stores are LEGAL, right? And they're owned by the STATE, right?

Some people are just WAY too busy worrying about what other people do, is what it is.
