I wish Wake County had gone with a two-hour delay. I didn't get to work until noon. Or start with a one-hour delay and put everyone on alert that it could be extended.

  • IMPEACHOBAMA!!! Feb 22, 4:37 p.m.

I'm glad they delayed. No job is worth taking a chance. It's only 2 hrs. My safety is worth that. If you don't like it then go to work and wreck your car. Wake County did the best thing by putting kids first. Thank you, Wake Co.

  • liberalmindset Feb 22, 12:59 p.m.

temps right at the 32 degree mark do not cause ice on the roads, period. its amazing that the weather people don't know this, or the school systems who delay hours before any precip even falls. when I look at the comments on here though, it's no wonder they do they things they do...some of you are comical when it comes to analyzing things you know nothing about.

  • liberalmindset Feb 22, 12:56 p.m.

"In Cary, however, crews were prepping main roads and bridges with brine, especially in known trouble spots."

This is getting ridiculous wasting our tax paying money for nothing...yet the other day when there were really 20 degree weather and ice all over the place, they were nowhere to be seen.

  • aprilhunter220 Feb 22, 8:05 a.m.

  • whistler411 Feb 21, 7:27 p.m.

Wake and Durham Counties are going to "wait-and-see"

  • Rebelyell55 Feb 21, 7:19 p.m.

Two hour delay, freezing rain, snow, sleet, tree limbs falling, power outage. It's going to be a mess tomorrow and won't get better until spring.

  • proud-bleeding-heart Feb 21, 6:34 p.m.

YAY!!!!!! 2 hour delay happy dance!

  • DontVote4LiarsCheatsOrThieves Feb 21, 6:31 p.m.

How odd! Wake and Johnston are under alert, but not Harnett which runs between much of both of them. LOL

    Whatever!!!

  • DontVote4LiarsCheatsOrThieves Feb 21, 6:29 p.m.

whistler411 - "People here just love to complain."

People everywhere do. It's a sign of the times. Few are happy about anything.

In the old days, we took life as it came, soldiered through disasters and survived. It gave us character and made us strong.

Today's modern folk won't have that to survive, and when REALLY hard times come, I doubt many of them will make it.

    Sad really.

  • Rebelyell55 Feb 21, 6:28 p.m.

Here is one for ya. Who was it that said "if won't for the weather, some people wouldn't have anything to talk about" ?

  • DontVote4LiarsCheatsOrThieves Feb 21, 6:27 p.m.

SaveEnergyMan - "And, I DO have multiple degrees in engineering. I understand the dynamics of cars, a good bit of atmospheric thermodynamics, fluids, and heat transfer."

Which means you know, If you can't walk on it, don't try to drive on it either - which so many people down south just don't seem to understand.

  • whistler411 Feb 21, 4:53 p.m.

Dorisr034 is exactly right. If there is no delay and there is any frozen precip, people will scream bloody murder. If there is a delay, and nothing happens, same outcome. People here just love to complain.

  • carolinarox Feb 21, 3:46 p.m.

And, I DO have multiple degrees in engineering. I understand the dynamics of cars, a good bit of atmospheric thermodynamics, fluids, and heat transfer. SaveEnergyMan

Yeah, and poor Jimmy is out here giving meterological admonitions like he's an expert. But I've seen rain freeze on bridges, trees and metal when the outside temp was hovering right above freezing, so I think Jimmy knows about as much about weather forecasting as he does about the rules of capitalization and apostrophes.

  • dorisr034 Feb 21, 3:28 p.m.

Why must you all complain soooo much? Just be prepared for either a lot of rain or a little ice!! If they send the kids out and there is ice you complain about how long the delay should/should not be. If they don't have a delay you complain about they don't care about the kids that have to leave so early. Start going to some of the school board meetings and express your concerns! Do what you feel is best for you and PLEASE STOP COMPLAINING...SOON ENOUGH YOU WILL BE COMPLAING ABOUT HOW HOT IT IS!!

  • Obamacare rises Feb 21, 3:26 p.m.

I wish you guys would all calm down please.

  • jcthai Feb 21, 3:19 p.m.

Wow Jimmytwotimes, you lived here all your life and you still don't know nuthin' about NC weather. Freezing rain has a lot more to do with the air temp than the ground temp. It can form a layer of ice on the roads even when the roads are thoroughly chilled. And of course, bridges and overpasses are even worse. It is best to heed these warnings from the weather forecasters over good old boy "knowledge" like yours.

  • RaleighNCGuy Feb 21, 3:12 p.m.

Can't really go on anything the weather forecasters say, they're not right much ~ ldestefano63

They are attempting to predict the future... I think they are right more than you give them credit for. You just remember when they are off a couple times while it affects you negatively. If you can't go by the forecaster’s prediction, what do you go by? I love it when people attack meteorologists. Keep up the good work informing us, WRAL Weather Team.

  • vanili1 Feb 21, 3:11 p.m.

  • zenonx6 Feb 21, 3:01 p.m.

Progress Energy,,, Keep my power on.. Or I'm gonna short you on my next payment. The power never went out when I was a kid. Now a stiff wind will do it.

  • zenonx6 Feb 21, 2:35 p.m.

Oh boy,,, Gonna go home and wax my sled.....

  • SaveEnergyMan Feb 21, 2:31 p.m.

Wow Jimmy, didn't know you had degrees in meteorology and civil engineering. WRAL is urging caution, a great idea on any day that it's wet.

I'd rather have people slow down to cross a bridge carefully rather than to plow through and kill someone because they were arrogant and lost control.

And, I DO have multiple degrees in engineering. I understand the dynamics of cars, a good bit of atmospheric thermodynamics, fluids, and heat transfer.

  • ldestefano63 Feb 21, 2:25 p.m.

Can't really go on anything the weather forecasters say, they're not right much - like last Saturday's snow that was supposed to be Maybe a few flakes around 4-5pm - started at 9:30am and didn't stop until after 7pm - Thank God it was warm Friday and the roads and ground melted it or we would have had a foot by the end of the day

  • Jimmytwotimes Feb 21, 1:51 p.m.

This particular storm is starting over night when it's dark. Having said that, the low temps look to hover around 32. So it'll be tricky for sure.

Nah, it takes temps in the 20's with some wind, a very cold ground and no sunlight in order to have ice. I've lived here all my life and they always call for freezing rain when temp is at 32 or below and the only time it happens is when the above stated conditions are there. sure there may be a tiny patch on a bridge or overpass but who cares, its common sense not to slam your brakes on bridges when they are wet and it is cold. it may be starting overnight but temps will be above freezing until 5am, so it will have two hours to freeze which isn't gonna happen. get ready for a rainy morning with a couple accidnets on bridges from unintelligent people who slam brakes when they think they see a shiny spot.

  • Nancy Feb 21, 1:16 p.m.

Hit a patch of ice yesterday morning, after sunrise, in a shady spot on Kildaire Farm Rd, so ya, ice would be a problem if temps hit freezing overnight.

  • 4kidsforme Feb 21, 1:16 p.m.

Could bring. Hmmm guess we should all prepare for a 2 hour delay LOL

  • themacs Feb 21, 12:58 p.m.

Sun up, not sun out. Temperatures will rise above freezing once the sun is up.

  • LadyLuck13 Feb 21, 12:14 p.m.

My bad...thats next week. Please no delays!

  • baracus Feb 21, 12:02 p.m.

Ah, so very a specific subset of "schools around here" it is true.

  • guitar88 Feb 21, 11:36 a.m.

Jimmytwotimes-"There will be no ice. do you not remember 3 weeks ago when it was 24 degrees out the whole day and freezing raining? Nothing got icey till after dark, at 24 degrees. things don't ice at 31degrees unless its after dark and even then it has trouble"

Things ice when the surface temprature is at or below freezing. It doesn't matter if it's dark or light outside.
    Holy Carp.

True, but the heart of the statement is based on if the air is 31 degrees and the sun is out....the ground is above 31 degrees.

  • CAVELADY2 Feb 21, 11:13 a.m.

on my year round calendar they are in school all day..??? what calender are you looking at??

  • mcorson2 Feb 21, 10:54 a.m.

  • Nancy Feb 21, 10:43 a.m.

"There will be no ice. do you not remember 3 weeks ago when it was 24 degrees out the whole day and freezing raining?"

Except the ground had warmed after several above normal temperature days, not so recently, much colder and the ground is colder.

  • Holy Carp. Feb 21, 10:36 a.m.

"Most schools are already out or only having a half day (year-round)tomorrow anyway."

What in Sam Hill are you talking about?

  • LadyLuck13 Feb 21, 9:51 a.m.

Most schools are already out or only having a half day (year-round)tomorrow anyway. Even a delay wouldn't be worth it. Just call it off. However...we live across the street and can just walk to school anyway:) I hope everyone has a safe morning tomorrow!

  • Jimmytwotimes Feb 21, 9:45 a.m.

"We need for the sun to be up before the buses and teens get out on the roads."

The sun is probably not going to be out until Sunday.

  • outhousecat Feb 21, 9:12 a.m.

I have a friend that works at Wake Med who's scared to death to drive when there's a chance of snow because Wake Med won't clear the streets around the employee parking deck. It looks like places like hospitals, where people have to work no matter the weather, would be the first on the city's list to get clear.

  • romneycare Feb 21, 8:52 a.m.

i'm guessing only freezing rain, but we will never know until it happens. Thanks for the heads up WRAL

  • guitar88 Feb 21, 8:38 a.m.

Hmmm, we've got some people predicting snow/ice changing to rain and others saying just rain. This will be interesting to watch unfold.

  • working for deadbeats Feb 21, 8:26 a.m.

It might be 100 degrees tomorrow, but it also might not be.
