"2 out of how many state employees? 300,000? I agree with the previous comment. What difference does it make where they work?"

This is only 2 of an unknown number that are cheating. I guess being they were STATE employees, it makes it SEEM a bit more offensive. I don't blame them for not paying. I would rather not pay either, but I have zero interest in going to jail so with the GUN BARREL pointed to my head, I pay up.

I wonder if Love will return to the State. He ought to just write off the 10K bond. He saved a lot more than that by not paying taxes for three years. Course, it would not surprise me if most States have an agreement to round of tax cheats for each other. The tax dragon is mean.

Why are they bothering these people. We have millions of criminals that are being completely ignored. Why pick on these folks. Oh yeah, they tried to avoid the tax dragon. THAT IS A NO NO. You can break PLENTY of laws, but you should never ever try to cheat the TAX DRAGON. I wonder will the tax dragon pursue the millions of criminals that the rest of the criminal justice system is ignoring. They are most assuredly cheating the tax dragon.

They don't have to have them withheld, but they like the rest of us have to pay them!

  • ms b Feb 20, 4:45 p.m.

I don't think its illegal to not have taxes withheld. The illegal part is in not filing and thus paying the piper at the end of the tax year.

    http://www.dor.state.nc.us/downloads/nc-4.pdf

The story reads that the couple "filed fraudulent tax forms with their employer". So it appears the form is the NC-4. All NC workers complete this form at the time they are first employed or change their withholdings. There is a question on the form that allows no NC tax to be withheld from their paychecks. (See link) Now keep in mind this is just tax withholding from your paycheck. If the couple filed their tax returns correctly, they would have paid their taxes on their NC income tax return. My guess is that they filed fraudulent state tax returns too.

Well they probley owe over 30K based on the bond.. But they will get to pay it off over time.

  • ncouterbanks69 Feb 20, 4:31 p.m.

how do you NOT pay state taxes in your paycheck?

The same way illegals that use a stolen SS number do. You claim the max number of exemptions and do not file taxes at the end of the year. Yes you "pay" something but not near the amount you are truly responsible for.

I hope they were suspended without pay from their jobs also, or do they still get to draw there pay checks?

I wonder if these are some of the "seat warmers" Gov. McCrory referred to in his State of the State speech?

  • blahblahblah Feb 20, 4:11 p.m.

It took 12 years before someone, somewhere noticed this?

  • cghsmom Feb 20, 4:11 p.m.

wondering how this happnens and who is exempt. Seems to be an issue with state workers as this is the same thing that happened to Sydney Lowe. And I have questions about the same since my child, who is a student at a state university , works at the university and the university took out federal taxes but no state taxes. She only works a little each week so does not make enough in a year that she has to even file anyway, but I was wondering why there were no state taxes taken out. Is this a common occurance of state agencies and insitutions? Does the state not take out taxes on state workers?

And the amount was not disclosed, why?
