This is too disgusting for words. I don't care what your position on the bill itself is, to intentionally kill a bill because it has too much support is a hallmark of fascistic tyranny. There are two gentlemen at the heart of this effort, one in the General Assembly and one lobbyist. Most of the others involved are just too susceptible to arm-twisting.

I love how these two gentlemen are all about "hands off my healthcare" well, unless it's something we care about of course. And "no bureaucrat should come between doctor and patient" well, unless it's a Republican bureaucrat, then of course it's OK.

It's this hypocrisy, rank disgusting hypocrisy, which makes the Republican Party into fools. It's measures like this, along with the insane 'obscenity bill' why Republicans are failing at the ballot box, an unless we change course, 2016 is going to be even worse than Obama. Mark my words and mark them well.

Save America? Not important. Special Interests? YEAH let's get re-elected!

    Liberty Tree is lonely.

  • wattsun Feb 22, 12:41 p.m.

Another point shouldn't these issues be brought before the people and not decided by Special interest and paid off politicians ?

  • wattsun Feb 22, 12:38 p.m.

This is a telling quote and its not just Republicans Its Democrats as well.
These people in office forget VERY quickly who they work for and think we are beneath them!
Rep. Paul "Skip" Stam, R-Wake. He said lawmakers stated we're being "harassed" with phone calls and emails about medical marijuana.

  • Minarchist Feb 22, 9:20 a.m.

It doesnt help the head of the DEA (a Bush appointee and Obama kept her) who believes marijuana is just as harmful as heroin. How do you even begin with that ignorance? First off heroin can kill you and weed cannot.

  • MyNameIsMud Feb 22, 8:28 a.m.

The Republican state legislature is making NC a laughing stock at the national level and this story has already gone viral.

  • Minarchist Feb 22, 8:20 a.m.

Our "representatives" basically told us to sit down and shut up cause they know what is best for us. I am so disgusted in the poor quality people we have in both Raleigh and Washington now. We need a third party, one that cares about the people not just the party. I am sick of politics and politician is a dirty word in my book regardless of which side they are on.

We have a 3rd party that has always wanted to end the senseless "war" on drugs and restore your personal liberty. Thats why I vote Libertarian. Fiscally responsible and socially tolerant as long as you are not harming, defaming, etc to others.

  • HelmutNewton Feb 21, 6:26 p.m.

It's obvious that these twerps in Raleigh are not being "harassed" enough! They're supposed to listen to us, not Big Pharma!

The committee listened to public comments about the bill for about 20 minutes before voting.

Really a WHOLE 20 MINUTES.. Let's face it this is a PHARMACEUTICAL STATE.. NC will be the last state to pass a law for anything to do with Pot.. TOO MUCH MONEY FROM LOBBYIST TO Politicians fat pocket. They could care less about you and I..

    Here's a question for WRAL...

Why are you letting this go without questioning Rep. Stam about the harassment?

Is the harassment he spoke of really the people calling and emailing in favour of (or maybe against) the bill? If so, the people need to know this is how the politician's see their constituents.

Is the harassment something else? Something more dastardly? If that's the case, the people need to know that our politicians are facing real harassment and we need to know who is harassing them into killing a bill that 58% of the people are in favour of.

Either way, the people need to know what's going on and WRAL should be on top of this.

I guess I will just have to keep popping the morphine pills for the nerve pain I go through day and night non stop.

I would smoke weed before I did that. Marijuana being illegal is just a law of man....its not like the law of gravity.

  • WageSlave Feb 21, 11:32 a.m.

Paul Stam thinks that people asking you to do your job is 'harassment.' Nice.

This is so typical of these small thinkers on Jones St. that have no vision other than their own special interests.

Then so should Oxycontin. Ask Rush "how addictive it becomes" Or Maybe Hyrodrocodone. Or Promethazine. Or Valium. Or Vicodin. Its funny MEP approves of all drugs approved by the government but not the "drugs" you can plant a seed and water.
    vinylcarwraps23

You hit the nail on the head. All of those drugs are manufactured and it's easy to have a pharma company in your pocket. I guess a marijuana grower, not so much.

And while we are talking about things people get addicted to, how about cigarrettes? They cause WAY more damage than MJ ever could.

  • streetglide Feb 21, 11:00 a.m.

Is it not amazing how our goverment politicain's know what is better for us than oursleves. but this has been going on since we told the Indians that fire water was bad stuff, but we ended up trading fire water with them for goods and then open up saloons to sell fire water, "they found a way to tax it",,, that is the truth people,

"We did it to be done with it, so people could move on for the session," said Rep. Paul "Skip" Stam, R-Wake. "...lawmakers we're being "harassed" with phone calls and emails..."

To be followed with, "Besides, the party made up our minds for us already, so no amount of harassment from the constituents we represent or pesky facts about medical and economic benefits are going to get us to actually think about it. Now bring on the topless possum bill!"

Not harrassment. Something the people are asking for and this is how you represent us. If you don't believe in it that is fine but how dare you say it is "harassment". I for one will be emailing Mr. Stam and he can bet I will not be voting for him next election since he can't manage to represent the will of the people and feels the will of the people is harassment!

I agree, that's how it's done up there. Just like the fast tracking on fracking... They've not got a method in place to get that money on Marijunana so they kill it for now. But I don't see how that gonna stop them from getting messages, E-mail and such, if anything it'll increase.

  • CountryBoyz Feb 21, 9:38 a.m.

Voted it down because they haven't yet figured out how to funnel all the money into their own pockets or pockets of their corporate buddies. They couldn't possibly pass this and allow farmers to reap any financial benefits of producing the crops, oh no.

If we grew enough, could even export to the 19 other states that allow medical marijuana and make even more money.

I urge everyone to read the book Bad Pharma. It will open your eyes to the legal drugs being peddled to people that hurt more than help. Marijuana is a weed. It does a lot more good then the majority of prescription meds.

I wonder what the fact is on the percentage of tobacco users that become addicted to it. Maybe we should make that illegal too.

  • thayerguy Feb 21, 7:17 a.m.

  • NC_LibertyLover Feb 20, 11:15 p.m.

I strongly urge people who support medical marijuana get behind a campaign for liberty republican candidate to unseat Stam. They should also support any other party challengers to Stam in his next election.
    UNSEAT SKIP STAM
The only way to be taken seriously is to make this action come back to unseat them. The NC legislature is populated by ignorant anti-farmer/ anti-patient lawyers who can't see past their own narrow interest. And these are the same people who won't vote for Industrial Hemp a plant that could save many small family farms in NC. Should also be mentioned Hemp fields could clean up NC rivers by acting as a barrier crop stopping pesticide and herbicide runoff while providing farmers a marketable product.

"fl2nc2ca2md2nc@ Supremacy clause of the Constitution--article 6 sect 2 specifically states that if a conflict between a state and federal law exists, the federal law is supreme. Check it out" josephlawrence43

No, it only pertains to those powers specifically given to the federal government. All other powers are reserved to the states and/or the people. Saying the federal government can do whatever it likes because of the supremacy clause is like saying the President can issue any executive order he likes, and encroach on any other branch of government in the process.

    End the war on drugs/

That's what most of said violence invovles. Remove the criminal and profit motives and the crime dries up.

This isn't the first time that Stam has showed how weak he is. I guess it's hard to have to listen to your constituents, who just want to try a natural medicine that's legal in other states. Nice work, sir. Well done.

By the way, when my wife was being treated for cancer, marijuana was the only thing that could make her feel well enough to function. Her doctors encouraged her to try it, though they obviously couldn't prescribe it. So, we had to deal with drug dealers, just to get something to make her feel better. Again, Mr. Stam, I salute you.
