You pay a fee to make a penny bid, the more bids you make,
the more fees you pay out.

Not a real auction at all.

    >>not to blame the victim but when will people learn you can't get something for nothing. - 2thec

I do blame the victim(s). We have created a society where individuals do whatever they want without any forethought and then expect the government to come to 'fix' the situation. If it's too good to be true, then it is.

Note, I'm not saying I support the owners of this scam as I don't. But you can't fix or legislate away stupid.

    >>“So, every time they bid a penny, I made 99 cents,” he said.

Seriously what kind of simpleton is going to fall for that? You could make laws until the cows come home and you're not going to be able to protect this guy from himself.

  • bubbba Feb 22, 1:03 p.m.

Hard times make people do dumb things. Hope the guys behind it do some serious jail time, since they probably stashed most of the money in some off seas bank account, just waiting for them to get out of jail.

It doesn't surprise me a bit that this went on known but unchecked. I filed a complaint with the Real Estate Comm, whose website says they investigate complaints against realtors. The realtor did not answer both points, the investigator even told her she didn't, and in the same letter told her they could find no wrongdoing and they were closing the file.

She's still out there, licensed, preying on people, and we get to pay pension and health insurance for the investigator and his manager. Wonder what the Auditor's doing next week...

"Our republican legislators will see to it that we will be more business friendly and companys like this will be allowed to continue operating." Middle of the Road

The article reads, "North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper isn't investigating ZeekRewards". Roy Cooper is a Democrat and is not investigating. I point his party affiliation out because that has about as much to do with this story as Republican policies: NOTHING AT ALL. Your hatred of Republicans is really pathetic.

Wow, you are really sensitive. Sorry if I hurt your feelings.

"I may be mistaking you for someone else, but I seem to recall you being very anti-Occupy Wall Street in your postings."

Second attempt at posting a reply here.

I did not support their movement. It was useless and their approach was anything but productive. They left areas they occupied dirty and the crime surrounding their movement was not positive either.

“I know every time I went to Lexington, there was 3, 4, 500 people standing outside the door every day ready to put their check in,” the man said. “Anybody you sign up, you make 10 percent of what they make.

I mean it was like 3 or 4 or 500 people. Not 100 or 200? Lol

  • bubbaOK Feb 22, 11:16 a.m.

The former pres of the UNC system who we won't mention fostered a culture wherein the majority could make up their rules within gov't structure resulting in a situation where the only criminals were those caught in the act, making laughing stock of law abiders. That's what I was told.

    >>as part of a combined Ponzi and pyramid scheme

So what have we learned? Private citizens do it, it's bad.....

OTOH, government does it and we call it Social Security.

It's quite clear Paul Burks needs to go to jail!! For trying to nose into a scam only the government gets away with...

  • southerntalent Feb 22, 11:07 a.m.

most people will not admit they are scam victims,on dr phil just a day or so ago some woman had sent over 180k to a photo of a man who she was in love with but was a nigerian scam. unbeliavable

"When did I not? No need for your surprise."

I may be mistaking you for someone else, but I seem to recall you being very anti-Occupy Wall Street in your postings. If that was you, it is nice to see you evolve to embrace Occupy's number one tenet. Welcome to the 99%

"Nancy are you actually supporting the idea that financial fraud should be prosecuted?"

When did I not? No need for your surprise.

From the AG's website: "How We Help Consumers
If you’ve been tricked or scammed, we want to help.

Attorney General Roy Cooper's Consumer Protection experts protect North Carolina consumers."

and "You can file a complaint with us and we’ll work to resolve it. We respond to 20,000 consumer complaints each year. If we find a pattern of illegal business practices, we can enforce the law on behalf of all North Carolina consumers."

I guess all the complaints he got just weren't enough to bother with?

  • downtowner Feb 22, 10:35 a.m.

Nancy are you actually supporting the idea that financial fraud should be prosecuted? If so I'm impressed. Welcome to the team.

  • JustAName Feb 22, 10:05 a.m.

The should charge the customers for being stupid.

  • Nancy Feb 22, 9:55 a.m.

"Blame Cooper all you want, the things going on here are nothing new."

But he was receiving complaints and just didn't bother to warn the public as the case built. I thought that was part of his job?

I guess the Atty Gen is just a figurehead position or is it just a stepping stone to Gov office?

  • GravyPig Feb 22, 9:21 a.m.

"Its funny you would tell someone that when all you do is blame democrats for YOUR problems. Spilled milk? Purdue's fault! Car payment you can't afford? Obama did it! Dropped out of school? Clinton held a gun to your head! Grass not growing in the left corner of your yard? Its obvious Harry Truman sprayed Round-Up there!!!!!!

HA HA HA !..Thank you, best laugh I have had all day,you are exactly right not only them but ther majority of people in general.... Don't forget the reason Gas is going up is because of Al Gore, they want people to stop driving and wal;k and take public tranportation."

    ROFL!!!

  • GravyPig Feb 22, 9:20 a.m.

"Never heard Cooper warn people about this scam, even though he had gotten several complaints. Isn't that part of his job?"

This is not the first "penny auction" place, and it certainly isn't the first pyramid scheme. You know, like Amway or those other companies that require you to get people in under you so you can make more money. And those under you will make more money when more people join under them. And so on.

Blame Cooper all you want, the things going on here are nothing new.

This is why the SBI needs to be put under Crime Control. Where have they been and what have they been doing under Roy Cooper.

  • Nancy Feb 21, 7:50 p.m.

So much corruption that Roy Cooper just plain ignores - it's amazing to me.

  • WooHoo2You Feb 21, 7:46 p.m.

  • RadioDJ Feb 21, 7:08 p.m.

Well, puttin the man in jail would be a jobs-killer. Our legislature isn't gonna interfere in good ol commerce here in NC. We gotta be FRIENDLY to corporations and git rid of all them pesky regulamalations. Git-R-Dun Legislature!

I couldn't even follow the action in the story! And I don't invest in things I don't understand, so it all works out.

  • dollibug Feb 21, 6:45 p.m.

It is strange that NO ONE KNOWS WHAT TO DO ABOUT THIS.....so many people tricked and scammed and yet no one is held *accountable and responsible*.....I guess the NC LAWMAKERS do not have anything in place which deals with *SCAMMERS*.....perhaps it is time to VOTE ALL OF THEM OUT OF OFFICE....since they do not seem to know what to do for the citizens of NC.

  • Uhavenoclu Feb 21, 6:38 p.m.

Funny how all the swindlers, and scammers, and thifes all have something to do with NC.
