Who knew SL was a Republican? He is just a step ahead of Gov.McCrory in doing away with NC income taxes.

  • sjfragnol Feb 19, 2013

When Lowe'son was charged w/home invasion and drug dealing, relatives were quoted as blaming it on his being in "that environment" (i.e. an HBCU), rather than acknowledging Lowe's son inherent character deficit. Many students of more dire financial circumstances attend HBCUs and don't participate in such despicable acts. So maybe Sidney Lowe's behavior can be explained away by his being in "that environment" (i.e. greed for more when you earn too much)

I still don't understand how Sid got into this mess. Wonder what is going on in his family life.

you really went there? My goodness....why can't we as a society get past that. I'm sure that had absolutely 0 to do with it.

    Take that garbage elsewhere!

  • Got Peart Feb 19, 2013

I grew up watching Sid play at State, and he was a favorite of mine. Hated that he didn't succeed in coaching here, but appreciated what he did.

That being said - for the life of me, I can't grasp this. First of all, given his financial status, he MUST have someone dooing this for him. Most Wealth Managers offer tax planning and tax prep services. Clearly they had to have known about his working and residing in NC (regardless as to where this firm may be).

Second - no way the STate of NC didn't send several notices regarding this. Did Sid just simply ignore, or did his firm ignore?

Third - NO EXCUSE for this. My wife and I make a fraction of what he does, and we go beyond our efforts to have taxes done, double-checked, and filed well in advance of 4/15 timeline.

In reality - here's what will happen. Sid will pay whatever back taxes he owes, plus a fine, and get some sort of probation.

If he really has no knowledge of what is happening wiht his finances, he needs a new advisor! I know plenty I could refer him too (I work in the field)

Coach Lowe was a good coach. The problem was his personality didn't fit in with Debbie and Packpride.

  • wildpig777 Feb 19, 2013

RE: NC State's Lowe arrested for failure to file taxes
my gosh hasn't this guy suffered enough, he coached at NC State for gosh sakes.

    you called that --COACHING?

  • hcdozier Feb 19, 2013

Lowe should have had plenty of time to file his taxes between mid March and April 15th during 2009-2011, he certainly didn't have any basketball games to coach.

  • 75Tarheel Feb 19, 2013

I guess the apple doesn't fall from the tree...Lowe's BOY commits Armed Robbery and Lowe 'hisself' commits white collar robbery. Cell mates maybe? Too funny!!

  • duwbit Feb 19, 2013

So are you saying it's OK to "bend academic rules" as long as you don't brag about running a clean program??? I don't see any "big difference", other than one program saying they didn't cheat while they were cheating. If what you say is true, both programs cheated.

  • JB61 Feb 19, 2013

WOW, Really!! I know of many whom havent filed taxes for over 12 years( child support cases). I've even sent a letter and completed an IRS inquiry form to report these non-filers. What was done, absolutely nothing!!! But now you want to blast a AfricanAmerican Coach who 'coache'd for a very prominent college? WOW, Really! Bring the Black man down, as society always have!

  • readme Feb 19, 2013

We don't know if he underpaid, we just know he didn't file. Still a crime, but we'll see if he's a cheat later.

Let's not get carried away. UNC cheated the NCAA, fans, and ultimately it's students. Lowe apparently cheated the federal govt. Who cares? They cheat us 24-7, and never get arrested.

Yea, Sidney was a "cool dude"but certainly Dan Kane and Pack Pride should be concerned. If COACH Lowe was devious enough to cheat on his taxes, certainly he was devious enough to cheat on the recruiting trail......(umm CJ?). Where there is smoke, there is fire. Right? Dan Kane?

  • ncstateforever Feb 18, 2013

I always like Coach Lowe. He always treated all with respect. I don't see this has anything to do with State. I hope he can settle this with no problems.

    Look,

I had several classes with athletes during my time at NCSU. And I can tell you, some of them were clearly not well enough academically fit to be on a college campus. (In fairness, most were football players from the Amato era.)

Now this never bothered me, because I sort of accepted (like most students/alums all over the country)there's a certain amount of admissions bending that has to happen if you want to compete in the revenue sports. BUT, we didn't go around bragging about our student-athletes' academic chops while did it either. We didn't preach and condescend like the ol' Tarholes. Big Difference.

Thanks, rsmith. It's sad when people cling to their rivalries when something like this happens. This has ZERO to do with anything at NC State. This is all on Lowe, and I'll wait before saying anything negative about him until more info comes out. We should all keep sports to the field and court and the personal matters are just that: personal and nothing to do with where someone coached or played.

  • badcompany1023 Feb 18, 2013

The tweet of the day " Lowe still can't beat North Carolina "

  • clearthinker Feb 18, 2013

They arrested him for this???? Nobody else in NC has failed to pay taxes? I guess somebody is trying to make a point but, other than illustrating that NC is still racist, I have no idea what that point is. Sure, he should have paid, but why the big deal? We've had governors more crooked than this guy. Good god, ya'll.

Lowe's problems are from money earned through endorsements. NCSU would be required to take out taxes on his salary. Lowe would be responsible for income from his 1099. Still this is pretty bad knowing the money he made.

Sidney Lowe was also cited for impersonating a basketball coach for the past 10 years.

  • TVs_Deceit Feb 18, 2013

Somehow I doubt that he purposely didn't pay his taxes that were due when he must have known it'd be discovered and he'd wind up in trouble for it.

Probably some issue other than willfully ignoring a tax bill. Bad math, bad accountant, bad tax preparer ect.

I give him the benefit of the doubt that he didn't just decide he wasn't going to pay something he knew he owed.

It seems unreal that he would not have had an accountant. So, the accountant would have filed his FEDERAL taxes, but not his STATE taxes? Time will tell.

  • roanmtnman2 Feb 18, 2013

Come on guys-get real. A lot of his income ( endorsements, Adidas, etc) was non-employee income and NOT subject to withholding. My guess is big bucks due NC.

  • monopoly1966 Feb 18, 2013

People don't forget to pay your taxs this year.

  • BBQCreek Feb 18, 2013

I didn't wade through all the comments, so this may be repetitive. He was charged with not filing returns, although section XV of his contract calls for the payroll office to withhold taxes in accordance with the law. Unless he claimed some bizarre number of exemptions, he should have had quite a bit of state taxes withheld. And even if he did claim excessive exemptions, I would think it is incumbent on the employer to disregard the excessive withholding, or at least report it to the State Dept of Revenue. If others did their job, he could be guilty of no more than not filing taxes, and may actually be due a refund. So others may be implicated for ignoring the law.
