As far as dementia, why would anyone leave a 5 year old in the care of someone with dementia? I can see having the grandkids visit, but with supervision. And not just for abuse like this, but for simple carelessness or danger through inattention. Can't say that he is all there, but if he had any signs of dementia, some responsible adult should have been around to assure the safety of the child.

alilred--bet he's been doing it his whole life; lock him up, throw away key.

Just a thought...are we sure this was the first time he did this or simply the first time he got caught. So many victims remain silent. If he is found guilty, he should be jailed for the reminder of his sorry life.

guns are not the problem ... this is the problem.

We are seeing this happening to children, in this WRAL viewing area more than once a week! This must be the tip of an iceberg. The Titanic steams on...

Why was a 5-yr-old in his house? Where were her parents, caretakers, etc.? As usual, not enough info in this story to draw any conclusions.

How do we screen those who come into contact with children? Do we stop trusting others? What do we do?

Punishment alone has not, and will not end crimes of sexual attraction / passion.

One path involves informing children and then checking with them, but that will bring the false accusations, the deliberate turning to such people (like drug warnings), and a loss of innocence. I don't have a solution to an ageless problem behavior, but I think it is learned during that mysterious process.

Just like the guy charged with raping and killing Shania Davis--also 5 years old---I'm seriously wondering why this dude is still breathing.

To wonder if dementia had anything to do with it would be the longest of long shots. Over a 3 month span and multiple times? No, not dementia. What will help her understand is when she learns that not all people are capable of good, whether or not it's their fault. Sometimes people are just sick or evil and can't be changed no matter how much a bleeding heart doesn't believe it

Was the child 5rs in 2010 or is the child now 5yrs meaning the child would have been two . Not that it matters What makes a 77yr old do this after such a long life?(if guilty ) Prayers for the child and family may they find a road to healing.
