I agree. Loads of rivalries all across the Country. Dean Smith began the run way back against Duke. Coach K has done the job to bring Duke to one of the top teams in America. These two schools recruit essentially the same players, and they have always banged heads. Look at the Nationl Championships between these two schools.
braves309 Feb 14, 7:50 a.m.
Listen you, it takes time for a team that has sucked for 20 + years to get back to once they were the best in the ACC. But you don't know college basketball, your just some wal mart fan. But just so you know I know my basketball quite well. And I see this team only going to improve. You don't think improving from the last 20 years to now? Your a joke. It takes time for a team like us to improve, but you will see. Next year or two we win the national championship, TAKE IT TO THE BANK!!
Toddler10-21 Feb 14, 4:11 a.m.
Glad its over. Didnt get my wish both teams didnt lose. Still love the shot by Rivers last year.
rduguyhere Feb 13, 11:33 p.m.
What exactly is "on the rise"? State is tied with UNC for 4th place in the ACC two thirds through the season. This is Moo U's best team in 30 years and UNC's worst team in 10 and 2nd worst in 30 years. Oh well, if that means you are on the rise, that's cool.
braves309 Feb 13, 7:47 p.m.
I just want to say as a pack fan, we are on the rise and will continue to be. We are definitely better than the days under Sendek and Lowe. So just wait and I bet my life that in a year or two State will have their third national Championship. Maybe we get one this year who knows. But mark it down in the next year or two State will be national Champions.
ugottabkiddinme Feb 13, 7:30 p.m.
If it wasnt for Dean, Coach K would not even be a known coach....Dean owned him head to head and the players that couldn't play for Dean and the heels wanted to play against him ....enter K..in other words he got Deans sloppy seconds..lol but it worked out well for him
rfred16 Feb 13, 7:30 p.m.
ESPN, The Sporting News, and Sports Illustrated all disagree..Polls disagree, so I would just love to find out where you get your info from??
FatherofFour Feb 13, 7:25 p.m.
Actually, it was 1992, and the next night we got to see Jordan and the Bulls play a NBA game. It was considered his homecoming game and was also a highlight of our trip. For a good ole' country boy like myself, it was the trip of a lifetime.
FatherofFour Feb 13, 7:21 p.m.
I will agree with that. I actually grew up a UNC fan until I attended NC State. It did not take me long until my loyalty changed. When I was in high school though, my team attended a seminar at UNC where we got to see the team practice and afterwards, got to meet all of the players (1993 with King Rice, Eric Montrose, Rick Fox, etc.). I waited in line to get Dean's autograph. I asked him if I could have my picture taken with him. I was just going to be happy to be in the same frame, so I stood next to him and handed a friend my camera. To my surprise, he said "Sure, but let's go over here". He proceded to lead me to the fan seats on the sideline where he sat down, told me to sit beside him, and put his arm around my shoulder for the photo. I was in awe, and it is something that I will never forget. I have absolute respect for that man for doing such a thing for a young punk like myself when 100's of kids were waiting in line. I also have the ultimate respect for him as a person and as a coach. I was fortunate enough to see it first-hand, up-close and personal. Just thought you Heels fans might enjoy that story.
GunnyGoesArrrgh Feb 13, 7:09 p.m.
And don't forget the man that coached MJ:) I think Coach Dean Smith plays a part in this storied rivalry.
PanthersFan45 Feb 13, 6:20 p.m.
Every conference has its rivalries, but the Duke-UNC rivalry is probably tops. To say its the only National Rivalry is pretty shallow IMHO.
iron fist Feb 13, 6:12 p.m.
After hearing himself all these years his ears tune him out. I agree he needs to retire. I don't know anyone who likes to hear him talk non-stop

Since UNC ( Tarheels ) aren`t good this year. Its not a rivalry.
How can the fans get excited about this game tonight when Carolina isn`t even ranked ?? LOL LOL The Hurricanes beat them by 26 points
I agree the TV stations tries very best to hype it up . Even years when Carolina and Duke isn`t good they still can`t accept that they have bad teams, they want them to be good its a total joke.
Alot of years when Carolina isn`t good the sports experts can`t stand it they still talk like they are a great team just like this year !!!!
FatherofFour Feb 13, 5:23 p.m.
I would not say that you are the BEST program in America, but I can't argue that you are probably the MOST POPULAR program in America. That is because of 1 man, and his initials are MJ.
weakened back Feb 13, 5:19 p.m.
i love hearing state and dook fans bickering back and forth about the rivalry. the common denominator is the HEELS, and that is why we're the best bball program in america.
markjb33 Feb 13, 5:02 p.m.
Sort of a good column, The assertions made initially though are correct. The undisputed best college basketball conference, is hardly a confereance at all anymore. The best days of college basketball are long gone, this rivalry, good as it may be, is for 2nd place in the ACC as Miami is clearly the best team!
GunnyGoesArrrgh Feb 13, 4:45 p.m.
I don't know: I think the fans make the rivalry as well. You can go anywhere in the Triangle and see someone wearing a T-shirt from one of the local schools. It doesn't take much to have a spirited debate, even with strangers. A while back, I was in Harris Teeter, and I saw one of the vendors wearing a Heels sweatshirt. I told him, "I like your shirt". I was wearing a Carolina sweatshirt as well, and he returned the compliment. Another vendor turned around and said, "I'm a State Fan and you BOTH suck." It was funny, but it shows the rivalry is everywhere, not just the players. In fact I've read that the players don't "get into it" as much as the fans do.
foghat001 Feb 13, 4:30 p.m.
Better look at TV ratings OGE, they don't support your argument - if people in New Mexico didn't care, they wouldn't watch.
sjb2k1 Feb 13, 4:22 p.m.
wish i could put dick vitale on mute though
RaleighNCGuy Feb 13, 4:08 p.m.
...says the State fan.
UNC fans would want a win over Duke than State any day, if they had to choose. In the case of Duke, no question a win over UNC. Sure, that State rivalry is sill there, but to say that it is THE local rivalry... you're just flat out wrong, hasn't been for a long time.
gman007 Feb 13, 4:06 p.m.
The school doesn't make the rivalry, it's the players. Back when they stayed in school 4 years, or even 3, the rivalries were great, every year, because of the experiencethe players gained each year. Now, it's one year and gone and every year the games the same, like a post high school game with a bigger crowd. How would Carolina be doing this year if a few guys had stayed?
4tarheels Feb 13, 3:57 p.m.
I believe State being sorry for last 20+ years changed it just as much as Duke being good.
OGE Feb 13, 3:37 p.m.
only reason it's national is TV...outside of that no one cares.
ellengraham5660 Feb 13, 3:35 p.m.
Who stole the Duke head????
early exit Roy Feb 13, 3:34 p.m.
That's BS. Adam is a unc homer.
Unc r Hypocrits Feb 13, 3:30 p.m.
It switches back and forth EVERY year. Don't keep up with it very much, huh?
JustAName Feb 13, 3:28 p.m.
Can Vitale retire after this game? His throat is telling him to hang it up, but his ears won't listen.
Unc r Hypocrits Feb 13, 3:26 p.m.
Actually, in the 70s, it WAS UNC - State. Ask your daddy, Phil Ford, about it. K changed that. Can't wait to watch tonight.
4tarheels Feb 13, 3:17 p.m.
What a kidder! Funny stuff!!
iron fist Feb 13, 2:38 p.m.
Maybe he likes Roy's backside
Coach K is still GREAT Feb 13, 2:36 p.m.
Oops... THAN your precious heels...
GunnyGoesArrrgh Feb 13, 2:36 p.m.
Duke and Carolina have had some great games recently. Last year's dagger-in-my Tar Heel hear,t courtesy of Rivers, was an exciting game that lived up to the hype. But before that game, I remember in '08 and '09 so much was riding on the second meeting of Duke and Carolina: seeding in the ACCT and also the NCAAT, and although it's not the official title, even the regular season title/winner (or whatever you want to call it), was on the line. Those were great games. When Duke and Carolina are both ranked in the top ten, with equal talent, those games are some of the best basketball we'll ever see.
Coach K is still GREAT Feb 13, 2:35 p.m.
Umm... if i'm not mistaken, they switch off every year, as they have done... FOREVER???
JJ is doing alright... averaging about 15 points per in Orlando...???
I think the bigger question is... where is Sean "twinkie" May, these days...
DUKE has more players in the NBA currently, that your precious heels, at least that's what I heard on the radio a couple of days ago...???
Looking forward to a good game tonight!
GunnyGoesArrrgh Feb 13, 2:32 p.m.
You're in the minority.
FilPhord Feb 13, 2:29 p.m.
bwahaha, blaming Swoff for state not having any rivals and no fans outside of Raleigh. SMH
No one cares about the state game.
Coach K is still GREAT Feb 13, 2:28 p.m.
IPC... i really think this game is going to be alot closer than what you and other Carolina fans say, this is a rival rich in tradition... this game will be a lot closer than what you might think.
I could be wrong, I hope I am, but either way... I think both teams will come out firing on all cylindars and make this game a good one!
Tizu Feb 13, 2:27 p.m.
While in the late 70's and early 80s the UNC / NCSU rivalry was tough, it pales in comparison to the UNC / Duke rivalry. Both teams have millions of fans scattered across the country and world. It's no longer just a national / local or state rivalry. That's how big it is. Now, Have the past few years lived up to expectations? Maybe a few of those games have been the "epic" game (see last year's last second 3 at the Dean Dome). It's lost a little bit of it's luster, but that won't be for long..it will come full circle in short order.
zonk Feb 13, 2:21 p.m.
Dickie V is a lot of things but he is not a bore.

You're a State fan right?
Anyway, I have traveled to Florida, California, NY, CT, PA, etc. while working and have watched the UNC v Dook game in those states in a sports bar, etc. Trust me, they do care outside the state of NC. There are Dook and UNC fans everywhere. Also, many that are simply just college basketball fans who enjoy good quality basketball and a great rivalry.
Now, if you are talking about your team, yes, no one cares outside of the State of NC. I can't tell you how many out of staters when they see NC State playing, they say "North Carolina" is playing. lol. Funny stuff.
randrmomanddad Feb 13, 2:12 p.m.
Carolina used to host the first meeting.......I guess they got tired of ruining senior day.!,by the way where is JJ redick these days?
SportznutV2.0 Feb 13, 2:07 p.m.
You make some points - however, most of your post is pure T jealousy.
Carolina and State are definitely rivals in all sports and so are Carolina and Dook.... but if you don't think this basketball games is one of the greatest college rivalries you are absolutely nuts - you are talking about two programs with many National championships between them
cjw6105 Feb 13, 2:02 p.m.
The Duke-Carolina rivalry reminds me of what Houston Oilers' Coach Bum Phillips was asked before game time what he thought about their opponent, Dallas, being called "America's team". Bum laughed and said, "Well, they may be America's team, but we're TEXAS' team!" And with that, the Oilers smacked the Cowboys.
I see the State-Carolina rivalry more as OUR rivalry than I do Duke-Carolina. Until ESPN morphed into a tv sports empire that is now in the business of creating rivalries, State-Carolina was THE rivalry in the ACC. It didn't matter that State was bad for so many years; this was the game more fans in North Carolina wanted to see than any other. You can make a case for Duke-Carolina being the best national rivalry, but I've seen the football rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State up close, and I think that one might not only be the best rivalry in college sports but the best rivalry in all of sports, at least on this side of the Pond. Not all Carolina and Duke fans are enemies, but the UM-OSU dislike takes it to another level. And unlike basketball, where there are two or three meetings a year between Duke and Carolina, there's only ONE Michigan-Ohio State game each season, making it more special.
ESPN replaced the State-Maryland rivalry with Duke-Maryland, and John Swofford finished it off by destroying the State-Maryland, State-Duke and UNC-Wake Forest rivalries by cutting their games down to usually once a season. That doesn't even count the State-Duke or Carolina-Wake Forest football games, which I won't rant about here.
My point is that tv can do only so much to create the rivalry they want to help their sponsors sell products. They've got a great one here tonight, but there's no passion like State-Carolina, at least for the local fans.
TruthBKnown Banned Again01 Feb 13, 1:54 p.m.
I don't know. The State-Wake game is pretty doggone popular nationally.
baldchip Feb 13, 1:54 p.m.
This will be ESPN's biggest game of the week-no doubt. And we get ACC Network and not Dickie V.
Jay Bilas is not bad!!
WE get a re-run in march before the tournament. YES!! ACC at it's best. NCAA at it's best. I love it-all!
4tarheels Feb 13, 1:41 p.m.
GO UNC! Give em HELL HEELS!!
Tizu Feb 13, 1:33 p.m.
I'll be surprised if it's a blowout by either team.
GTHC but most of all LET'S GO DEVILS!!
Boot-the-DC-Tyrant Feb 13, 1:23 p.m.
Love the Heels but I have a feeling that this loss might be worse than the Miami one. We have no organization, no heart, no desire to pound the ball inside. Nothing. It's worse than the Joe Forte years.
GO HEELS for what it's worth!
Barely Feb 13, 1:15 p.m.
I didn't circle it. I didn't really know the date of the game until a week ago when the news started talking about it non-stop.
Knightwolf Feb 13, 1:14 p.m.
I know that Dick Vitale is a really good person and all ( on the board of directors of the V Foundation for one) but he is a bore.
GunnyGoesArrrgh Feb 13, 1:04 p.m.
The Sporting News has named Duke/Carolina the BEST rivalry in ALL sports, and SI calls this game the second best, behind only Red Sox/Yankees.
I don't care what people think nationally, this is the game we in the Triangle all circled since the schedule came out. This is a down year for Carolina, but I hope the game is competitive, and the re-match in the Dome should be even better.
This rivalry has so many memorable moments, I hope there's a few more tonight.
