Um I don't think it is pointless especially to Tyler or his family, whether it was said or not. That was actually extremely rude. I don't think you consider your parents/grandparents pointless. He played Miami the day after and did extremely well proving how tough he is mentally but that does not mean hearing about something like this doesn't upset him. I don't think a grown man, and his dad at that, would make up hearing this so the point that they even sounded similar is terrible. Yes it may have just been a few students but I could not imagine dealing with a loss of a family member then hearing such things come from a fan base.

    Pointless article about pointless people.

  • Rapid Deployment Feb 10, 2013

Don't worry Dukies. If your team plays well enough to go into the tournament as one of the top four teams, Dickie V will clear the air about what really happened at the now famous "Chantgate" game. He's like Dukes unofficial lawyer.

  • NCSU72 Feb 9, 2013

OMG, still arguing about something that clearly happened. According to reports in today's paper Tyler's Dad heard it -- it was his Mother they were chanting about -- she died a week ago....

The Duke students veered away from their cheer sheet and got crudely creative with the "How's your Grandma" chant.

    Enough. It happened.

Let's show some respect, offer our sympathy to the Lewis family, and let Mrs. Lewis rest in peace.

  • uncsuckz Feb 9, 2013

as usual, hole fans trying to deflect from the real issue...their ongoing demise as noted by the NY Times. Yawn. Wake me when you have something relative about Duke other than the incessant whining of the sheep

You said " . . . could easily come . . . " That is not proof that it happened. And this coming from an NCSU fan. Seriously? If I were you, I would not be throwing any stones.

Nope that's reserved for Maryland..at least we've had a basketball team to cheer for the last 20 years.

  • Lux Libertas Feb 9, 2013

    +2005.

It's good for the rest of America to get a glimpse into the dookie mindset. We here in the Triangle already know the deal. We have to live around these people.

  • Footflash Feb 9, 2013

I think the point here is that everyone agrees this could easily come from the Dook student section. No one is surprised. We expect this type of behavior from them. That is sad.

Any Duke student/fan that doesn't understand that they are perceived as pretty much the lowest of the low by the rest of the college basketball community really needs to check themselves. I pity them.

  • lanecc Feb 9, 2013

One claim on Twitter and every body is jumping on this bandwagon. Did you really hear it or are you making yourself hear it after someone else claims they heard it and putting that thought in your head? Even his father is saying he heard it. Did he hear it at that moment or is he just like the rest of you - "hearing" it because you want to hear it. I was there, did not hear anything but "Past your bedtime".

Yes and just a few years ago Maryland fans threw quarters and glass bottles at Duke fans and players.,and there was hardly no mention of it. It's simple, people love to hate Duke and will find any excuse to bring them down. If you honeslty believe that there were more than a few individuals chanting that or somehow it was planned you are clearly delusional.

  • Lux Libertas Feb 9, 2013

For my money, he looks more like Barney Fife than anyone.

(Who also happens to frequent Raleigh with Thelma Lou.)

I think a Barney Fife chant would have been more socially acceptable, and resemblance-appropriate. Anyone know if they did one?

I've acknowledged that there are tons of d*bags in the Duke undergraduate student body since this happened. And even before it happened, I pointed out the d*uchebaggery of some Duke students attempting to scalp their student tickets to the UNC game.

There is alot of whining about this incident, but it isn't coming from the Duke fans. That's what I've been saying since Thursday night.

Between chants about dead grandma's and wearing blackface and holding racist parties, I think it is time for some sensitivity training for Dook students.

UNC only plays on the road on primetime tv, yeah right. Also yaking the players off of the court early to protect them, so you are saying that Roy wasn't worries about protecting the scrubs that he left on the court.Since they weren't stars he wasn't worried about them? Thats pretty lame, they are a part of the team also and a coach should not leave any players behind, that says alot about him. If a coach pulls his players off the court to protect them, he pulls all of his players off the court. He either left because he could not handle the blowout or he took his stars off the court to protect them and left the rest of the team behind. Either way it does not say alot about Roy. BUt it is expected for UNC fans to defend him just like they are defending the school with all of this fraud, but hey, alot of Germans defended Hitler.

  • Pops49 Feb 9, 2013

Why don't you non believers listen to the tv announcers and the comment made after the firt free throw. He apparently heard something that he thought was not appropriate. I can hear the word grandma at the end of the chant just before the first shot.

  • randrmomanddad Feb 9, 2013

THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THIS IS WIN.!!! Try pulling for Carolina, Eveyone in the country wants to beat u.You'll play in front of the ugliest nastiest fans imaginable, u only get on primetime tv when your on the road and the networks know there's a good chance you'll get beat.! The players get the *%#@*
beat out of them, teams like Creighton break your players arms and try to injure them. The coach gets tauted by fans and media when the team gets beat, for taking them off the court early to keep them safe, when one of them runs into some kind of problem....WIN THATS THE ONLY WAY TO SHUT THEM UP.!!!

Actually, this is true, the Duke mascot is French. When looking for a mascot the university took suggestions in 1921. Someone suggested "Blue Devils", which was the name of a French military unit in World War I known for its special berets and capes. Thus the reason the current mascot wears a cape.

You have to ask why people hate Duke so much. Do you know why?

  • hi_i_am_wade Feb 9, 2013

It seems the Duke fans have their fingers in their ears and saying "LA LA LA LA IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!"

I don't know if the chant did or did not happen. But I do know this: the facts are the Duke students aren't the most friendly people in the world. They have said chants in the past so bad that even K, who curses more in one sentence than many people do in one day, had to come down on them. At one time even the university had to reprimand the students because of the things they said. Remember that the Duke students years ago taunted a player who just lost his parents. That was many years ago but the fact remains that Duke has had many rude chants. So to say it couldn't have happened is myopic.

In the late 60's, some Duke fans heated pennies over lighters , and threw the hot coins at opposing players, particularly black ones. A larger number of fans threw unheated coins.

  • grh90 Feb 9, 2013

This was not much of an incident compared to the other incidents that have gone on at duke recently. Black faced female Lax players and racist anti-Asian frat parties are far worse.

Thank you, like I said, and this includes cheating, drinking, hiring escort strippers, football players getting in car accidents, IT happens everywhere at every university. There are classless UNC fans just like there are some Bovines in the same boat.

  • Rameses Unchained Feb 9, 2013

"that kind of trash wouldn't be tolerated". Have you really ever looked at some of the stuff they do. Heck, they tolerated the LAX parties for quite a while. Plenty of Common Sense here, and typical Dookie "our morals and ethics are higher than anyone else" attitude. Crystal sez hi.

  • tlg0022 Feb 9, 2013

People love to demonize Duke anyway they can..we're used to it. If this had happened about anywhere else, there would be no mention of it at all. It's funny how people forget what JJ Redick went through when he played at Duke, things 10 times worse than this supposed mythical chant. In no way was this a planned, unison chant or else there would be solid video evidence by now. The only chant that can be heard in any video I've seen is "past your bedtime".

That is a riot. So a "select few classless individuals" aren't Cameron Crazies? Wonder if you can tell by the secret handshake or the piercings? Yunno, UNC football was damaged by less than 12 football players, a tutor, and a couple of dolt professors. Wonder if there were 15 "select few classless individuals" making the chant? I'm guessing it was at least 20.

You can defend and deny all you want to. No it wasn't all the students, but it was a handful and several witnesses heard it. Just because you didn't hear it does not mean it didn't happen.

  • masontom56 Feb 8, 2013

Of Course it was a stupid thing to say but, Duke Students are IVY League rejects anyway.

  • DurhamDevil Feb 8, 2013

If it was said, it was said by a very few - so few that hardly anyone heard it.

And if it was said, I am personally embarrassed by it even though I nor anyone else had anything to do with it.

Above and beyond that, what else could be done? People are mean - just look at the vile that comes from fans of all teams in these boards.

How is it any different, other than people in here can say it without revealing their identity? In my opinion, that's even worse.

Let's give our condolences to the young man and move on.
