"Im offended that they are offended, it's a fraternity, an AMERICAN Tradition. It's what we do and did in a fraternity and hope we will continue to do" - Fun

Sounds a lot how folks thought about slavery once upon a time.

  • BaseBallMommy Feb 7, 5:30 p.m.

I am so tired of everyone being offended at everything!!! This is a little ridulous to me and I hope people realize that just because they were throwing an asian themed party doens;t mean they are makin gfun of you. For years there has been toga parties and you never heard of the greeks being offended. Just let people have good clean fun!

  • anews77 Feb 7, 5:10 p.m.

can someone tell me exactly what these students did that was so offensive?...

I'm offended that they're offended. So there.

  • USAF Vet Feb 7, 4:21 p.m.

And hey… some people are less sensitive about these things and some people are more sensitive. The one thing we shouldn’t do is degrade others because they feel differently about an issue than ourselves. I was taught that it’s not what you’re called, but rather what you answer to… but I still try to remain aware of how others might receive and feel about things that are of lesser priority to me. But that’s just me.

  • USAF Vet Feb 7, 4:21 p.m.

I don’t believe the themed Duke party had any racial or discriminatory intentions and I don’t think the offended group even believes that… the issue at hand is the over-exaggeration of the Asian stereotypes. If the fraternity didn’t include some of the costumes and the invitation, there might not have been a reaction at all. Stereotypes that are left unchecked eventually become a belief to others that are ignorant of the truth. I’ve attended parties where a co-worker’s wife would apologize for not having fried chicken and malt liquor. Was she being racist..? No, because she only knew of the stereotype that she had been exposed to, she actually believed it. Now does the Kappa Sigma Fraternity know that Asians CAN pronounce Ls in words and don’t wear loin cloths? Of course, they do… they wanted to mock the stereotype and probably didn’t consider (or care) if it would offend anyone else. And I think that’s the issue.

Im offended that they are offended, it's a fraternity, an AMERICAN Tradition. It's what we do and did in a fraternity and hope we will continue to do- There have been Hollywood Movies made about it Animal House. Don't be so thin skinned, it was just a party a reason to invite women over drink and have some fun ! Join a fraternity if you think you can handle it, you'll get another education about life !

Just going to ask this one question, then will move on because I understand some can be taught and some simply cannot.

This fraternity has now been suspended by their parent organization.

Do you think the parent organization would suspend them if they hadn't crossed a line?

Do you think the parent organization would give up the dues for any length of time over a simple triviality, especially in this economy??

    Iak Hsehpen

Here's one for you... do you think they would have been suspended if this hadn't have been blown WAY out of proportion??

    Whatdaheck"

Maybe it is OK for you see any particular group being sterotyped and made fun of like the said SNL skit or any White people making joke about Red****s or the AA using the N word. To me and to many of my friends, it is NOT OK and we find that extremely distastful and offensive. We are definitely teaching our kids "IT IS NOT OK". The fact we still have so many people being so insensitive is the very reason why it should be bring it to the debate. I'm not trying to change your mind regarding any of this.

Just a crazy reminder in one fact:

Guess who own the majority of National Debt?? Where are the economic growing the faster? Where are the emerging economic power houses?? Do a lot of our younger generation consider the people they are mocking might well be their new boss??

  • speckledmytrout Feb 7, 1:53 p.m.

It's kind of sad everything is becoming 1984. Remember the movie Lethal Weapon 4? Uncle Bennie? That was hilarious and I don't think anyone was offended. At least I never heard of such being the case. Can't have it both ways, speak of tolerance and in the same breath criticize, condemn and complain when another person doesn't conform to your idea of "correct".

  • Da Toy Maker Feb 7, 1:50 p.m.

    To continue:

For those of you to say "Stop whining. You will find it in the real world", etc. Really? Try to do something like that in any of the fortune 500 companies and see if you would have a job to go back to. You find some people in a said group don't think a particular action is offensive doesn't mean other people in the group is OK with it.

It is true that I have a very heavy accent when I speak but my son is born here. Should I just tell my son to accept being mock/ Tell him it is just a joke? In the same token, it should OK for me to teach my son to mock other race? Do you all even think about what you are talking about?

NO! Discrimination against anybody is NOT already and we all should be against it?

    Peace!

  • smegma Feb 7, 1:44 p.m.

Freedom of speech is one of greatest thing the USA has. That is why we law protecting the people like, the Westboro baptist church, KKK march, the Black Panthers, or people burning our flag, etc. I absolutely don't agree what they stand for and their view BUT I whole heartly agree that it is their right to do so. We all have in time have said or done somethings that would be hurtful to other people whether intentionally or not. The point is that when we sterotype other race or group to mock them, it could be very hurtful.

  • RM24 Feb 7, 1:35 p.m.

Dude, I *AM* a southerner, and my grandparents were all farmers. I'm just not in favor of making fun of people because they're different, Asians OR southerners. Don't any of you see that it's NOT RIGHT to make fun of people like that? Would Jesus have made fun of Asians or southerners?

    birkie74693

My grand fathers were in the military but that doesn't make me a soldier. And joking about an accent is not a big deal. Its funny when done to all races. I expect Jesus would say grow up and quit pouting over nothing. And for someone so "thoughtful" of feelings you sure didn't mind calling me "all-so-intelligent" when I disagree with you. But that's typical.

  • Whatdaheck Feb 7, 1:26 p.m.

It was hilarious. I'm as white as they come and I thought it was funny. As long as it truly in the spirit of fun and not mean-spirited belittlement, this stuff is funny. The truth is, IMHBAO, the ONLY ones stirring up national & racial tension are the ones making a themed college frat party into something it never was.

  • eric52272 Feb 7, 1:17 p.m.

oh get over it...everyone mocks someone's dialect at some point...It is intended to be funny and it is...I have an asian friend and I have several times jokingly spoke to him in an asian accent even though he does not speak with one. He finds it funny and even mocks them too....so really get over it, this is not an issue. There are serious problems in our world, country and local area and this is not one. As well as black folks talking? And every single race in this world. Its NOT a big deal. Get over it! Be proud of being different. This is still one of the most ridiculous stories I've ever read. Also feel free to correct spelling or grammer.

Well I guess you won the spelling be? Either way this was no reason for such "pouting". Most of the time a little $$$ somehow makes it all better. And you can poke fun at the farmers and southerners all you want. Just a thank you everytime you have a meal will do. You can't grow that in your computer yet can you? And please feel free to correct any grammer issues I have in this hear post now. And yall have a good day.

    yankee1"

Seriously?? WOW. As an Asian immigrant, I love the American Culture and life style yet very proud of my Asian heritage! If you look at Asian in the USA as a whole, we are doing quite well:

1). I would say that as a group in general, we extremely value education and academy achievement. Look at SAT or any measurable result and tell me what would you find.

2). As a group, we probably have the small % of people depending on Govt assistance. We are fully exploring the great opportunity that is available to us. We don't ask for special treatment, just equal treatment.

3). If you look back in history, we,just like other minority group, had been discriminated against. There had been laws target Asian if you care to just look up. Yet, we do adopted and worked our way up.

    Peace!

  • evansbluecf Feb 7, 11:47 a.m.

So what if someone was offended? I'm offended every time I see a viagra commercial during supper, but I don't see anyone suing pfizer. No one cares.

  • Raised_by_Books Feb 7, 11:13 a.m.

In deference to those who were offended I am sorry that you found this event to be categorically "racist". You do realize that we are heading for a post-cultural world as all vestiges of class, race, ethnicity, gender, culture, history, and personality are streamlined and metamorphosed by politics, economics and social media into a body politic that is homogenous in mind and spirit. It was inevitable that technology would bring all cultures together and cultural collisions would result in awkward interactions. What is revealed is that the pace of cultural evolution is much slower than the pace by which its leading edge is being absorbed into the body politic. Our cultures are being driven to extinction by a powerful global force that will remake the planet into its “own” image.

"In case you dont realize Duke is a private school where the student body is mostly a wealthy upper class and mostly white. Sure they are more inclusive & open minded these days but most of the kids are 'special' and have these degrading and racist exclusive values in private."

I'm dogging the people who are claiming this is no big deal, but you're wrong here, too. This incident is offensive, but I don't think it was racist. It was insensitive and ignorant, not racist and malicious.

  • jackflash123 Feb 7, 11:04 a.m.

" 'People are never going to stop their racist ways until there a harsh penalties for this type of behavior. These people should be expelled from school, charged with a felony, and thrown in jail.'

That is one of the worst ideas i have ever heard of Hans. They didnt do anything wrong"

#1, I think this Hans guy is an undercover conservative trying to parody liberals. #2, yes, that's a dumb idea. The solution is educating these people about why it is wrong, not punishing them for something they don't understand. #3, they absolutely did do something wrong. They were culturally insensitive, disrespectful, rude, and naive. I will *not* condemn them as racist. I think if we can calmly educate them about why their actions are legitimately offensive and they actually listen, they'll be pretty remorseful for how it comes across as racist. That's a pretty important departure from actual racism: When it's pointed out to you, you regret it.

You know, my own msg below, about how a lot of the Asian students are native-born Americans, makes me realize part of the problem here: poorly educated people (who may not know any people of different ethnicity) just don't UNDERSTAND that Americans can be Muslim or Hindu or any shade of skin color. A lot of uneducated types think only White Christians are REAL Americans. Which is pretty darned sad.

“It's one thing to have an Asian themed party, it's another to have a Asian theme party and mock that culture with "herro" and other such carricatures of several nationalities. It's offensive.” – GravyPig

It’s funny! Just like when black comedians imitate a white person (not in a flattering way). There’s a difference between having fun with stereotypes and actually believing some race is inferior.

I’m of white decent and had to listen to derogatory remarks made to me while growing up. But I wasn’t offended by the movie “What men can’t jump”.
