You have to have an ID to get your welfare check, food stamps, WIC and SSI Disability and no one complains about that, so why the big deal to vote? Maybe it is because you are doing it in a fradulant way?

  • ladyofthehouse Feb 8, 2013

A new place to use photo ID - to obtain a rabies vacination at the durham county animal shelter (per Durham County Sheriff's office) "No appointment is necessary but a photo ID is required". If we need an ID to cash a check, go to the doctor, get some medicines and have your dog vacinated why not to vote. I think voting is pretty important and I don't want someone going in with my name and voting. What is there to prevent that right now? It's not racist in my mind, it just makes sense.

  • connieleigh4 Feb 6, 2013

    the NAACP is a joke!!

  • Krimson Feb 4, 2013

Let the GOP have their Voter ID, Barber... In NC, there are 1.3times as many "white" living in poverty as there are "blacks"... In fact "whites" account for 44% of all people living in poverty in NC...

Voter ID will certainly effect all races, but in sheer numbers, more poor whites will be effected than any one minority group...

Curious, has any one questioned why the GOP would want to spend money installing a system of Voter ID when every registered voter in NC already receives a Voter ID Card???

  • vmpage Feb 4, 2013

"... 75% of the poor in North Carolina are black..."

The actual Black poverty rate is 33% in NC and 35% in the US (statehealthfacts.org 2011 stats).

"You do minorities and the elderly a disservice when you assume that they are incapable or incompetent to the point that they cannot provide a photo ID to vote"

Liberalism at its best! Keep everyone stupid-fied and you will stay in power, that is what the game is about today! Just listen to the media, TV never lies right????
"Stupid is as stupid does", never has anything ever been said that is so true to the times we are living in!

  • IndependentAmerican Feb 4, 2013

" It is people like him who cause division and is not fit to represent people of all races. He is such a disgrace to NC. free3beme" Me thinks Speciale represents people of all races where Barber represent only one race. I know which one I think is more fair.

  • Sherlock Feb 4, 2013

Truth hurts does it not Rev. Get a reqal job and support those you can.

  • josephlawrence43 Feb 4, 2013

Would anyone consider it a tad on the presumptious side for Rev. Barber to "correct" anyone--let alone a sitting member of the Legislature???

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again01 Feb 4, 2013

"Until a few weeks ago, I too questioned "why would anyone be afraid of voter ID?" But,after a family friend asked me to assist a young man who lost his wallet and all ID, I now understand the challenge. The young man could not get a duplicate DL because he did not have proper ID (two forms of ID). He could not get a duplicate SS card because he did not have two forms of ID. For several months the young man had tried on his own, fortunately I was able to assist. This was an young man born and raised in NC, and already had a DL in the system, and still couldn't get a duplicate DL. The point is unfortunately, there are others with special circumstances who are unable to get proper ID. Now, I also see this can be a problem with voter ID under the current guidelines."

Then let that young man cast a provisional ballot, knowing his vote would be validated later with photo ID. Problem solved.

  • kmt Feb 4, 2013

Wow, this article has over 500 comments. I guess everything really is about race.

  • junkmail5 Feb 4, 2013

junkmail5 and his liberal friends know exactly why they are opposed to voter ID laws... because it would suppress the illegal alien vote.- shaynewrites

I'm the same guy who is against new gun laws, so I dunno how "liberal" I am.

I just know I don't want to waste millions of dollars to fix problems that only exist in your imagination.

Hordes of illegal aliens voting for example. Which doesn't actually happen.

How about the man who showed up to vote, but couldn't because someone else had already given his name and address- shaynewrites

You mean yet another thing that didn't acutually happen?

because if that does happen in real life, which is extremely rare, they STILL let you vote with a provisional ballot, then resolve which one was correct afterward with further investigation, and only count that one.

Every study done on voter fraud found near zero in person fraud.

If you ACTUALLY care about fraud, fix mail-in ballots. But that'd hurt republicans so you won't.

  • littleriver69 Feb 4, 2013

Come on, you know the NAACP is never wrong!! Never!!

  • Crumps Br0ther Feb 4, 2013

Since there isn't an actual problem, don't spend money to fix it.

    Done.

My way is cheaper AND better!
    junkmail5

What if we did something anyway and left the world a better place anyway? Thats what most do gooders use as their reasoning for small problems.

  • Crumps Br0ther Feb 4, 2013

What I do care about is rude, crass and insensitive remarks made by public employees and elected officials, ergo Speciale was rude and unprofessional.
    amenmike

I hope you are talking about the Rev's as well. And if you are tired of rudness you better get off the planet, because its getting worse all the time. Your pipe dream of political correctness is crumbling. People are tired of walking on egg shells. You DO NOT have the right not to be offended. And just because you're offended doesnt mean you're right

  • Crumps Br0ther Feb 4, 2013

You know something is up with this issue when all the democrats on here are worried about the cost. The one and only time they dont want to throw money at a problem. That should tell you right there that there is more to this then they are letting on.

  • Crumps Br0ther Feb 4, 2013

Crumps Br0ther Please.......... he'll come out later as they all do,,,,ooops Sorry and then voted out......
    SouthernPackerFan

So you hate gay people and dont want them to hold office? Real progressive of you

  • Crumps Br0ther Feb 4, 2013

Crumps Br0ther 1) costs....you "fiscal cons amuze us" 2) implementation see #1 3) no proven evidence thus no reason for unneeded Costs
    SouthernPackerFan

No. An uneeded cost is me paying for someone who wont pay their own way. You want to take up for the poor at every turn and give them everything they need but you wont give them an ID. Why not? It was aproblem they didnt have phones, but its not a problem they have no ID? Liberal logic

  • Crumps Br0ther Feb 4, 2013

NACCP Dr. William Barber was speaking power truth. I fully agree with Dr. William Barber. 75% of the poor in North Carolina are black. Majority of the poor do not own driver license, car, passport, savings account.

    Proud Liberal

Then your War on Poverty has failed. You mean to tell me that Barry punishing the rich isn't helping these people like you thought it would? Imagine that.

  • Crumps Br0ther Feb 4, 2013

Why should Barber and the NAACP be afraid of a voter ID if they don't have a hidden agenda? killface

Because it would deny a lot of poor black people the right to vote. (and many poor/elderly whites too)

While not solving any problem that actually exists.
    junkmail5

Deny them how? Im not seeing why this issue is so difficult to resolve. We provide the poor with everything else they need whats one more thing? Someone thought it necessary they get phones, but not ID's? The opposition to this make me ask more questions.

  • shaynewrites Feb 3, 2013

Dr. William Barber is like any other attention-starved liberal. Be it school choice or voter ID laws, liberals are constantly looking for a Tiananmen Square moment where no tank exists. The grandstanding of Dr. Barber regarding school assignments and classroom diversity is absurd. Most of the kids they claim to be concerned about are poor. The kids would be better served if the likes of Dr. Barber and his fellow liberals cared as much about the diversity of these kids' dinner plates and clothes closets.

  • shaynewrites Feb 3, 2013

junkmail5 and his liberal friends know exactly why they are opposed to voter ID laws... because it would suppress the illegal alien vote. This "show us your papers" garbage is just that, garbage. The argument that we already have voter ID because they ask for your name and address is foolish. You don't have to pull anything from your pocket. How about the man who showed up to vote, but couldn't because someone else had already given his name and address. A voter ID law would have protected him. Junkmail also knows ID laws would suppress the vote based on laziness, not race or poverty. I had to show an ID to get a job with my employer. Yet liberals think it is a violation of a person's civil rights to show an ID for one of the greatest privileges our country can confer upon someone.

  • maggiesp7 Feb 3, 2013

If Democrats can pick them up and take them to voting sites then they can make sure they get a voter ID. give the homeless etc. a little less money and pay for a voter ID.

  • FlyingTurtles Feb 3, 2013

The legislature simply needs to ignore Barber, he is a publicity hound and a race hustler. There is no communicating with him, he intends and demands the right to dictate other's thoughts and acts.

Shut this manipulative publicity hound down, ignore him. He's neither clever nor intelligent. He's a gasbag.

  • Whosays Feb 2, 2013

    killface, AMEN

  • Whosays Feb 2, 2013

You don't have to drive or anything else to get a photo ID, it is just an excuse just like always to make a claim of racism by Rev. Barber. If you can't drive you can vote anyway unless you get someone to take you that is a silly comment.

  • DaddysAngel27 Feb 2, 2013

The naacp just needs to be banned. I am personally sick of them!

  • lawdawg302 Feb 2, 2013

Mr. Barber is a despicable man. He makes his living destroying communities by creating hate, mistrust, and envy. If we ever really began getting along. Mr. Barber would have to obtain an actual job. So to avoid legitimate work, he promotes division by exploiting every issue. In areas where no issue exists, he creates an issue.

  • free2bme Feb 2, 2013

Many disagree with Speciale, who needs to go back to school on how to represent a constituency. It is people like him who cause division and is not fit to represent people of all races. He is such a disgrace to NC.

does the adjective colored have a new meaning that has not been disclosed?
barber is a race baiter while he sleeps.
he and his pathetic organization are a liability to racial equality. theyre in the way.
how can this not be seen universally.
    and rectified.

  • sorryyouralib Feb 2, 2013

You can talk all day long about how this is going to hurt the poor or elderly, but what it really is going to hurt are your chances to win elections. ID's will not hurt anyone. They should have ID just in case they get hurt and someone needs to know how to contact family members. The only racist I see is Barber.

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again01 Feb 2, 2013

At least we have a nice majority of republicans that can get this done in our state.

Put that in yer pipes and smoke it, libs. This is getting done, and it is COMMON SENSE.

I'm out. Nothing more needs to be said. We don't need to convince you. We already have our state representatives. Get it done, reps. Get it done!

  • justjean Feb 2, 2013

So someone riddle me this, why is it so difficult for the people Barber describes to obtain a photo ID?

  • Offshore Feb 2, 2013

Why should Barber and the NAACP be afraid of a voter ID if they don't have a hidden agenda? The NAACP would do themselves a favor to have themselves another president..I've never seen a man of God look and speak with so much anger and despise.
    killface

You are correct sir. You'll find that the racist street, as far as Barber is concerned, only flows one way. He'll tell you he's not racist, but I assure you, that street flows both ways. I treat others as I want to be treated, with disregard to color. Oh, I have my moments, only when someone throws stones.

  • GG Feb 2, 2013

It's just plain laziness not to have an ID besides if you get any kind of check you have an ID!

  • atc2 Feb 2, 2013

He comes across as racist and seems very racist with his words. Also, EVERYONE should have legal identification to vote, EVERYONE!!!
No ONE should be able to vote if your not a legal citizen or if you are a citizen you MUST have an ID. Anyone who believes you do not need an ID is a clown

  • oleguy Feb 2, 2013

One group was brought here and has been here 150 +/- years, still complaining wanting something for nothing,,, Another group just walked here 20 years or so, taking over, taking jobs, starting business's , willing to work and can and will do anything,, and some of us including the Govt. sit back and watch, doing nothing

  • romey5 Feb 1, 2013

OK - sanity check. Does anyone really believe voter id efforts aren't politically motivated. Voter fraud is not a problem as has been stated before. A voter id bill will likely pass simply because the legislature is Republican controlled and we have a Republican governor and because someone without id is much more likely to be Democrat. The energy put toward this bill is much better used addressing real problems.

  • jburack Feb 1, 2013

Anything Barber doesn't like is racist, everybody is afraid to say anything every time Barber goes off claims racism. Why is it ok for the NAACP to yell racism but not any other group that isn't Black. You the press won't even set the record straight. Its about time that somebody has called them out on it. Right away here in Fayetteville the local NAACP was quick to jump on the band wagon and stated that they will be in Raleigh to protest.

  • lessismore Feb 1, 2013

Junk mail.....if only you could see how misinformed and wrong you are. You welcome corruption into our system and are so naive....you actually don't believe there is corruption when more people vote than those registered. You can not defend the fraud and corruption we see in our voting system...you only say it doesn't exist.....how naive.... I don't know why you want more gun laws when you don't believe anyone will do harm....we all live in a perfect world...according to you. But, when the day comes and the GOP controls our system, you will be the first to require voter photo ID....I guarantee it.

Scholar of what? Stereotyping and demeaning people per chance? As someone who has a disability I'll state unequivocally here and now that Mr. Barber's constant description of people with disabilities is degrading, insulting and everything I have had to spend almost my entire life trying to disprove. People with disabilities are not stupid Mr. Barber, nor are we incapable of completing basic life skills tasks such as obtaining an ID...we do not appreciate people like yourself scooping us up like some society flotsum to be added to the list of people you purport to be "yours".
Mr. Barber many of us with disabilities have fought all our lives to be rid of the incessantly needy "poster child" image and do not appreciate you pulling it out and dusting it off every time it is politically expedient for you!
