30-year old structure is not "iconic." -- commment

Love talking language usage.

AGE doesn't determinate "iconic" unless you say mean art being classical, as the athlete in discus or javalin poses. Icons were once just religious symbols, I think. Nowadays, my desktop has many, Google, being one.

The motel was a handy "landmark" after referring to the 'draw' bridge (actually a swing bridge). In the context of Surf City, the Hardess would be an icon, and landmark, as well as that greasy roofed cafe, Batts Grill, where you turn on New River. strangely, the ocean itself is not 'iconic' in that it's all over the east coast and world.

"Madonna" used to bring to mind "Holy mother and child" but our society has lowered that word to mean a woman who would do anything for money and attention.

In Surf City, on the coastal island where weather changes things, evan a little motel sitting closely on both sides of the main road and is open all the year, becomes "iconic."

(maybe use the insurance money to put decent beds in the other part of the hotel! It was so bad, we left a day early. None of us could stand it anymore! All 3 of the beds in our unit. I dont' care how nice a place or great a location- which it was, if you can't sleep, you are miserable.)

Maybe you all are just wussies....blah blah blah....

The main part of the hotel is across the street and didn't look damaged. This was just a small single-story section and the offices. (We were there this summer). If it were me, I'd just rebuild the office or move it into the building across the way, and call it a day! Thankfully, no one was hurt.

WOW. A structure fire in the winds we had last night? Those firefighters (all volunteer I think) did a great job to keep it contained to the hotel and one house.

When you consider what hurricane Fran and froyd did to that area it is. I have property about 4 miles from there.

The people at that beach are so kind. I hate seeing reports on damage to Surf City / Topsail.

so so sad. hope they can bounce back and rebuild! the owners really did a lot with that place! i practically spent all of my childhood summers in Surf City and watched that place really transform over the years. thank you to all the many fire departments that came out to respond.
