I agree. It doesn't give me very much hope in my office pool this year. I might just go with the "pick the best mascot" strategy. :)

Thanks, Tim. There's no way I can even speculate about the NCAAT, I can't even figure out the ACC!

Thats what i said this past weekend, seems every night 3-4 top 25 teams lose.

Many Brackets will be busted early this year i believe.

  • FatherofFour Jan 29, 2013

Congrats to the Heels fans tonight. I did not watch the game, but based on the box score, it looks like you controlled the game throughout. I wish I could celebrate with you, but State took another road loss, and lost a key player in the process. What a crazy year in college basketball though. Tonight alone, the #15 and #19 teams went down, and #16 is getting ready to do the same. At this point in the season, it is anyones championship to win. Michigan appears to the be the best team right now, but they could go down this weekend when they play Indiana. It gives me a little solice to know that State only lost to them by 7 even though the game wasn't really that close. I think whoever can stay healthy and get hot come tourney time will stand the best chance, but at this point, who knows who that will be.

  • StunGunn Jan 29, 2013

Ugly game, but it's a "W". Paige had a good game. Sure hope Hairston is going to be OK.

  • ncstateforever Jan 29, 2013

McDonald is a three point shooter, and a good scorer. Sometimes Carolina only has 2 scorers on the floor.

Good night, Anderson. Yes, I hope Hairston is feeling better soon, but concussions can be tricky. I really feel for the young man.

We're REALLY missing the Wear twins. They're having a terrific year at UCLA. Their leaving abruptly has really hurt the Heels. Roy hadn't recruited big bodies because he had two with the twins. Carolina is still feeling the impact of them leaving.

  • anderson Jan 29, 2013

Hope Hairston is back at least in time for the back-to-back road games at Miami and at Duke. They might can let him rest the next two games since they are at home against VT and Wake...but can't take any games for granted. But for his health and future, I hope they rest him until he is 100% ok to play again. Night all...

McDonald is not a great player. The little he played this year his numbers were WAYYY down. I think bringing him back with many minutes will hurt their little bit of chemistry they have unless they need him to spell Hairston for a bit.

  • StunGunn Jan 29, 2013

    View quoted thread

Agreed, but we sure could use his talents now! I like him, though - he's a good kid.

  • anderson Jan 29, 2013

If Carolina keeps playing like this it will be an NIT year. They are winning but they really don't have any killer instinct. I would blame youth but Bullock and Strickland aren't that young. And Strickland should have to run a lap every time he shoots unless it's a layup.

I think they're getting better about diagnosing concussions, and Carolina has done a lot of research on them. THey have special helmets for football players that have sensors in them to study how hard the hits are. The players have to undergo tests to be sure they'r ready to return to play.

I also agree with Heelman in that players are getting bigger and stronger and faster. The hits keep coming.

Tokoto is a good athlete but needs to learn how to shoot and pass...he'll be a really good player by his junior year.

  • anderson Jan 29, 2013

    View quoted thread

I think it's some of both. Players are quicker and bigger now but also a lot more emphasis, which has been sorely lacking in the past, has been put on diagnosing and treating concussions. They are nothing to play with...not worth the brain damage we have seen with many NFL players the last few years.

  • StunGunn Jan 29, 2013

    View quoted thread

I know. It doesn't seem to be Tokoto, that's for sure.

  • StunGunn Jan 29, 2013

    Now Bullock???? C'mon man!!

  • anderson Jan 29, 2013

Looks like Carolina is doing all they can do let BC stay within striking distance. Still a young team that needs to learn to play a full 40 minutes and to play on the road. I hate to admit it, but Carolina has had 3 or 4 calls go their way that shouldn't have...a couple of no calls when Carolina fouled and a call or two on BC that weren't fouls. Do the Heels have ANYONE besides Hubert who can play defense down low?

On another topic...hope Hairston is back soon. He seems like a level-headed kid..glad to see him at least back on the bench...was really scary when he almost fell back down even with two of his guys holding him up.

  • StunGunn Jan 29, 2013

They are getting very sloppy with the ball, and Boston College is hanging around.

  • ChuckietheChest Jan 29, 2013

Mcadoo playing hard like he wants a chance to play in the NIT.

  • FatherofFour Jan 29, 2013

I have to agree with you and it is a sad reality. Every team wants the bigger and stronger players and there does not seem to be a shortage of them as in past years. Unfortunately, in this sport, there are no rules changes that would make a difference either. They have tried to make rules changes in football to reduce head injuries, but I have not noticed a considerable difference.

  • Heelraiser RIP Jan 29, 2013

    Reggie is listening

  • Heelraiser RIP Jan 29, 2013

Word is PJ will return home with the team tonight. Good to see him back on the bench. Bullock not much of a factor on the offensive end tonight though he does have seven rebounds. BC must be guarding the perimeter tight since that flurry in at the beginning of the game...wait....Paige just hits a three!

  • ncstateforever Jan 29, 2013

We are definitely missing Hairston and McDonald

The players are bigger, faster, stronger; the games are played higher off the ground, and much more physically. It's only going to get worse.

  • ncstateforever Jan 29, 2013

let's hope hairston will be ok.

Is it just me, or do there seem to be more and more concussions occuring nowadays, in all sports? Is this just a result of them being better diagnosed in this day and age, or are the games just getting rougher? I do not recall hearing about so many players being sidelined with concussions in years past.

  • ncstateforever Jan 29, 2013

I don't know who is going to score now that Hairston is out.

  • StunGunn Jan 29, 2013

They just said Hairston does have a concussion - from whiplash in his effort to avoid hitting his head on the floor. Gotta really feel for him, and I hope he feels better soon.

  • grh90 Jan 29, 2013

Best wishes and prayers to Hairston.

It's probably better that you don't say anything about State deserving a foul called ON them - you've seen how "spirited" some people can be here, but I'm glad to see your honesty, along with heelman, who's a very fair poster as well.

  • FatherofFour Jan 29, 2013

    View quoted thread

I will not argue with you there. I actually often think to myself that fouls on State should be called, but I have never posted it. Kudos to you for your honesty.

  • mxteam44 Jan 29, 2013

Hairston looked like he was out of it. I'm guessing a concussion, and from what I saw, I'm guessing it's a pretty good concussion. Man, he was on fire too! Sure do hope he's ok! We can expect him to be out for at least a couple of weeks, just to be safe. Get well soon PJ!!!!

  • FatherofFour Jan 29, 2013

Wow. I agree with an earlier poster that a player taken out on a stretcher is never a good thing, regardless of the sport. It seems the triangle teams are losing key players at an important point in the season. Here's to hoping they can all get back to playing as soon as possible... even Ryan Kelly. It is always better if you can get a victory against a team that is at full strength.

  • still heelman1973 Jan 29, 2013

You'll never see a State fan admit that a foul should have been called on their team. UNC fans are just more honest about such things. :-)

  • StunGunn Jan 29, 2013

No news on Hairston, but he took a nasty spill when he collided with Strickland. He probably hit his head, and he was taken away on a stretcher - he looked like he was in a lot of pain.

  • StunGunn Jan 29, 2013

This is turning out to be a real strange game. That ball obviously hit the rim, the officials missed it, it's supposedly not a reviewable call, but they did revoew it, and gave the ball back to Boston. That was definitely the right thing to do, but the way it was handled is very strange.

More than any outcome of this game, I hope Hairston is OK.

That is funny. State fans accused of complaining about the refs calls against their team, and here is a Carolina fan complaining that his team did not get a call against them. No dig intended. I admit many State fans do complain about the refs from time to time, and I may be guilty of that a little myself. I do not recall seeing any State fans complaining that a foul was NOT called on their team. Not that you were complaining either. Good luck to your team tonight. Looks like they have it under control right now.

Just wanted to update this so it is not misinterpretted. I am not even watching the game, and didn't realize Hairston was hurt until I read the later posts. I hope he is okay. I never want to see any of these college kids get hurt no matter what team they play for.

^No problem. Definitely nothing funny about this. That was one hard collision, I'm sure he's in pain.

  • still heelman1973 Jan 29, 2013

My post was from the steal and breakaway dunk about 5 minutes before that collision. When Len Elmore was saying that Hairston reached on the BC guy that fell out of bounds, then Hairston flipped it ahead to Strickland for the dunk.
