How about $14,400/year, without health benefits or a car, just as I do? Try living on that and see how you feel about the poor...

"if someone who doesn't have a job claims they can't live on $350 a week how will someone who does, and an important one for that matter?"-bob d

That was the point, bob. Not to see the gov dine on Ramen noodles, but to illustrate that $350/week is inadequate. Also he should only get THAT for 12-20 weeks then his staff can hold homemade cardboard signs at off ramps for him.

  • bob d Jan 30, 3:39 p.m.

why would the governor try to live on $350 a week? he has a job, being governor, and taking care of his state so that the right policies are in place to bring industry here. this is the stupidest thing i have ever read. if someone who doesn't have a job claims they can't live on $350 a week how will someone who does, and an important one for that matter?

"Hey I think someone getting $350 free money shouldn't complain about anything!! I'm paying for it, I should be the one to complain. Get real."

No you are not. The employer that sacked them is paying for it.

    "
Maybe those who propose McCrory live on $350/week should try looking for a job."

I've got a job, mister. Difference is, I'm not trying to slash insurance benefits due to those unemployed through no fault of their own to subsidize tax cuts for erstwhile "job creators."

Last time I looked the News and Disturber was full of jobs, yes some I would not want to have but if I had to I would scrub toilets to make my house payment n car payment. A job is a job, if you are looking for some backbone.
It amazes me some people have computers n internet but complain about bills HUH? Call your friends, pound the pavement get a JOB.

"I think the reason we are descending into 3rd world status is because people are lazy now."
If people are so much more "lazy" then why is the American worker the hardest working, most productive, least vacationed worker in the world? Are there so many people surviving off handouts when they could get off their tails and work that they are the majority of the popular vote?

This country experienced an ascendency in the 50s and 60s when income tax rates were higher and infrastructure and education was being built. Tax rates are historically low. So quit whining about "your" families income.

  • Crumps Br0ther Jan 29, 3:01 p.m.

In Obama's America you dont have to though Why are you sacrificing so much when the government can take care of you?

  • Wendellcatlover Jan 29, 1:19 p.m.

"It is that egoist me uber alles philosophy that is rotting this country to the core and why we are quickly descending into third world status."

I think the reason we are descending into 3rd world status is because people are lazy now. King Obama was reelecte4d because people are lazy and want a hand out. It's much easier to sit on their tails all day and collect unemployment, welfare, etc than it is to get up, and find a job. You are not too good to work at McDonald's or whatever "menial" job you can find. At least make an attempt to earn your own way and I am more than happy to help you where I can. Just don't touch my family's income if you're too lazy to get off your tail and try!!!

  • goldenosprey Jan 29, 1:05 p.m.

Whiskey, I have fared pretty well and I have worked and studied hard to do it. But I have observed that sometimes bad things happen to good hard working folks, a fact you seem to be unable or unwilling to acknowledge. I read you loud and clear. If you have lost your job through no fault of your own it is indeed, your fault anyway and you best create a decent paying job out of thin air or go die. It is that egoist me uber alles philosophy that is rotting this country to the core and why we are quickly descending into third world status.

  • goldenosprey Jan 29, 12:59 p.m.

Maybelle, that is what you have to do anyway if you lose your job through no fault of your own and your unemployment check only covers most of your mortgage and you are on your own for car payments and or repairs, utilities, food, health insurance, gas, school supplies, etc.

UI is insurance. That is the "I" in UI. It is not an "entitlement" because you have to work and earn to qualify for it. No amount of sanctimony will change that fact.

  • aamblb Jan 29, 12:59 p.m.

The ones that are bad mouthing, don't want to work. All you want is free handout. The BIBLE says if you don't work you shouldn't eat. I work for what I get.

  • Whiskey4one Jan 29, 12:55 p.m.

Goldenosprey, it is mentalities like yours that have put our country and state in such dangerous financial position. Instead of acknowledging maybelle and heavenly's hard work and self-sufficient attitude, you attempt to mock them. For every one of your 'poor, helpless' victims of cruel circumstance, you fail to see a long line of decisions throughout there lives where they didn't value education, hard work, and personal responsibility, and ultimately ended up permanently dependent on government entitlements that were earned by folks like Maybelle. Where does it end? You mock their sense of personal responsibility and hard work, but without it, there is no gov't assistance. Then its everyone for themselves. I think I know how you'd fare in competition with us.

  • batcave Jan 29, 12:45 p.m.

  • Obamacare rises Jan 29, 12:35 p.m.

I wouldn't be surprised is McCrory spends $350 a day to satisfy his lifestyle. We all know he's in bed with Duke Energy.

  • maybelle Jan 29, 12:32 p.m.

    Goldenosprey
I was unemployed once then I got 2 jobs to make ends meet. I did not apply for entitlements. I lived on what I had and raised 2 boys to boot. Both told me they never felt poor. We had our church family and each other. Sure I didn't have a new car and yes I had a house and made house payment. Drank lots of sweet tea and planted a garden. Had fresh veggies. Sewed for the dry cleaners part time at night and kept everyone elses kids. Ate lots of homemde bread cause it was cheaper and got a 50lb bag of taters at the farmers market every month. You do what you gotta do. most countrys don't have welfare or food stamps, have you ever wondered why so many latinos live in 1 house? They support each other.

  • moreheadnc Jan 29, 12:09 p.m.

350 a week plus the taxes you will pay on it brings it to what 250 or less?

  • Pirate01 Jan 29, 11:57 a.m.

McCrory has a job so therefore does not need to live on $350 a week. I have a job too so therefore I do not need to live on $350 a week. Maybe some of these people who have been unemployed for 99 weeks should try getting a job so they do not have to live on $350 a week?? We have a $3 billion dollar unemployment debt thanks to the dems. It is time to pay our bills!!

  • goldenosprey Jan 29, 11:49 a.m.

Maybelle and heavenly, how much better you are than everyone else! Aren't you thankful that circumstances have allowed you adequate time not living hand to mouth in a low wage state to position you to hold out a bit if your job creator decides to pull the plug? Or are you just smug?

what is wrong with people? This man is trying to fix a broken system in this state and although I am one of the people that would qualify for the max money if unemployed, I know this is necessary. I have in my youth with five children, lived on much less. I am thankful I have been successful in my career and don't have to worry anymore but it took hard work and dedication to get where I am. I did not spend needlessly and I know how to be self sufficient. I garden for my own food, raise my own chickens for meat and eggs, and have paid off all my debts over the years. I do not live above my means and I even make my own clothes, quilts and am quite an accomplished carpenter (and yes I am a woman!). These are skills that would serve the younger generation well to make it though hard times rather than looking for others to take care of them.

I make 15,000 a year and I do well with a husband and a child in college. I work har and proud and try never to ask for a hand out unless I earned it. People are just afraid to work in Walmart if they have to or work on a farm. Oh well!

  • lost in translation Jan 29, 9:54 a.m.

These people crack me up. McCrory doesn't have to try to live on $350 a week. They do. He is currently employed and has done the right things in his life to position himself to remain very flexible in an ever changing global market. If you don't want to live on $350 a week, then go make $10-$12 dollars and hour and live on a little more. My wife makes about $350 a week right now. She is gainfully employed with some benefits. BY the way, she teaches school and works about 60 hours a week. Stop complaining and pointing at others for situation. Adapt. Get two jobs. Educate yourself. Others have done it.

I believe the inflation tax is the largest foe that the poor and middle class have."- wageslave

So inflation applies in reverse to the top 1 or 2 %???

This is why conservative economics like trickle down unicorns are outright debunked failures. Conservatives can't do math.

  • goldenosprey Jan 29, 9:44 a.m.

Chemist, we will never get past the parrotted hate for anyone down on their luck until all the teapartiers/conservatives realize these fundamental truths:
    1. UI is Insurance, not welfare.

    2. Deregulation, not Obama, tanked the economy.

    3. Republicans in Washington refuse to pass the President's jobs bill because they are more interested in torpedoing the economy. Likewise in Raleigh, republicans are more worried about camera wands and photo IDS than jobs.

    4. Everyone qualifying for UI was until recently a productive worker contributing to the tax base.

    5. Employers owe the feds, not NC.

    6. We have a shortage to begin with because SUTA was slashed, not because the UE are paid too much.

  • Minarchist Jan 29, 9:17 a.m.

"Please point out the line on your paycheck stub where you paid for someone's unemployment benefits." - Save It

    See line: "Federal Tax Withheld".

The extended benefits being paid to millions beyond the 26 weeks of employer paid benefits are coming from your paycheck.

The vast majority of the cost is paid for directly by taxpayers fromt he federal general fund. (a small portion is coming from employers through FUTA but not much).

  • aetius476 Jan 29, 8:52 a.m.

"Exactly WHAT did I do to not TRY to be successful? Exactly WHAT am I doing now to deserve to be called insulting names?" -
    Chemist18

    Nothing.

You made a good living for 11 years. Did you save? Did you make provisions for the day when you would need to retrain, move, or switch positions?

You DID know that that day would eventually come, right? Sounds like you are finding at least some work now.

All companies make labor adjustments and shift resources as they see fit. Is this a surprise?

UE insurance will/has supported you for 26 weeks while you shift gears. What more do you want?

  • WageSlave Jan 29, 8:52 a.m.

Also, if the new max is 350 then what would it be for most of those who weren't even receiving the max before. When I was unemployed I was making 374 a week. What would that be cut to under the new calculations? $150-$200. I barely made my bills with the $374. deastwood1

    issymayake

You sound like the youngin trying to make this personal. The state has to pay back money to the fed, this is a good way to do it. If you can't put away some savings while making 50K a year that is your problem. Its YOUR responsibilty to put away money for hard times. You want to belittle someone for knowing how to get by when you are complaining about not being able too.

The role of government keeps getting larger and larger.

  • aetius476 Jan 29, 8:46 a.m.

"Plus, if we don't give those who truly qualify for unemployment those benefits which WE taxpayers do NOT directly pay for, they'll have little alternative but to go for Welfare benefits which WE DO directly pay for." - Nephesh Kai

But WE taxpayers DO pay for the additional 52 weeks of benefits that the federal extension offers! This is not UE insurance anymore, but simply welfare transfer payments. Taking from general tax revenue and giving to those not working.

This 1-1/2 years of income support tends to keep folks from accepting employment and getting back into the workforce where they may be more likely to find a better position.

If you are not working for over 6 months, your re-employability declines a lot. O'bama' misguided "compassion" is just making people's situation worse....

  • Chemist18 Jan 29, 8:25 a.m.

What I find more distressing than being unemployed or only a contractor is the amount of pure hate being expressed. You'd think we lived in France.

I worked for a major Pharma company for 11 years, I contributed to bringing four new life-saving prescription medications to approval. I poured my passassion into my work. How was a repaid? I had my "position eliminated". Why? Was there a financial crisis? Nope. In fact the new CEO practically screamed congradulations at all of us for doing such a great job and ensuring the company's health. One week later he announced 5,000 job cuts.

For conservatives to say that I'm lazy and don't want to work because I can get $500/week? I'm currently working my SIXTH contract job in three years. You'll have to excuse me if I'm offended...

Exactly WHAT did I do to not TRY to be successful? Exactly WHAT am I doing now to deserve to be called insulting names?

  • 4Strikes Jan 29, 8:11 a.m.

First these liberals kill all the jobs, then they complain that $350 a week in free money for doing nothing isn't enough. They want the people that actually have jobs to make the same as they do for doing nothing. Makes perfect sense to me.
