And this is the same person that wants to cut unemployment benefits.

Your derisive comment proves your own point that "progressives" ARE divisive.

Do you have a link, or is this speculation?

  • carrboroyouth Jan 18, 4:17 p.m.

well written, skell! I feel like the media doesn't help either. It's always white vs. minorities, males vs. females, rich vs. poor, dems vs. repubs...

When can we stop judging people at an individual level instead of generalizing whatever group they may be a part of?

  • Whosays Jan 18, 4:15 p.m.

And I have high regard for Dr. MLK for fighting for the rights of all people.

  • Whosays Jan 18, 4:14 p.m.

This is just my personal opinion, God says do everything you do in my name, not someone elses. And we are not supposed to be flaunting that either, another word from the good book.

  • Terkel Jan 18, 4:02 p.m.

How disappointing that there were no photos of the people packing food and "giving back".

  • NomoreKoolaid Jan 18, 4:01 p.m.

Former New Orleans mayor indicted on federal corruption charges !!

  • Dan Cooper Jan 18, 3:51 p.m.

No article on race relations would be complete without some liberal telling us how evil the majority is (except for them of course) regardless of the fact that there's a 2nd term black man as president. MLK would be very happy to know about Obama and very disgusted at the slander continually spewed by hate-filled leftists.

  • North Carolina Cutie Jan 18, 3:49 p.m.

Only GOD will make the changes man just looks at race and judge.

  • NomoreKoolaid Jan 18, 3:31 p.m.

Former New Orleans mayor indicted on federal corruption charges !! MLK had a dream......we got a nightmare.

    Exactly.

  • awr117 Jan 18, 3:14 p.m.

Our president is to blame for dividing the nation.

  • skell1000 Jan 18, 2:47 p.m.

The hate, the bitterness, some of what I've read here give credence to the cause of MLKJr. The good doctor/reverend sought to unite, not divide our creeds, races, genders yet since his death we must still cross divides, some as wide and as long as the years since his murder. I still wonder what it will take us as humans to live harmoniously, fearless, not envious of each other yet still in love with life.

    SemperFi... Always

Maybe they are tired of being carped on, having their bank accounts that they work for drained and then being told that they are greedy racists and not giving enough.

  • pinehorse Jan 18, 2:38 p.m.

Commemorating Dr. King and improving state government's "customer service" ethic? Two completely unrelated matters.

  • 4Strikes Jan 18, 2:37 p.m.

" MLK was a good guy. These dummies he mentioned are just plain old parasites, just sucking blood for themselves." GooberNoggin

Exactly, MLK is probably rolling over in his grave with the likes of Barber, Sharpton, Jackson and all the other racist prasites that claim to be working in his name. Equality is that last thing that any of those low lifes want. It's all one big racket to them, trying to extort the maximum that they can from the public, government, private business, they don't care.

  • free2bme Jan 18, 2:21 p.m.

McCrory is using campaign funds to reward those on his cabinets that are not getting salaries. The 11% raise he gave to his cabinet does not provide a cut in spending in any way. He came in office spending and probably will continue to look out for his rich/wealthy friends.

  • SemperFi... Always Jan 18, 2:18 p.m.

  • goldenosprey Jan 18, 2:05 p.m.

So, this thread is being used to relitigate MLK day. Why don't y'all go ahead and lament the end of segregation, you already do on any story involving schools or the school board. You remain on the wrong side of history.
Government employees lost a day at Easter. You are not paying for anything, and much as you love to imagine you are.

Besides, most middle class and up white people love MLK day. Long ski weekend.

  • free2bme Jan 18, 1:59 p.m.

Sorry heavenly and adrakedavis that you can not see the reason in celebrating. It is only divisive to people who think as you do and not those who know what the fight was all about. Martin Lutther King holiday is not a racial thing. It is not a black holiday. Marting Luther King Jr. fought for equality for all people regardless of their race, ethnicity, or gender. So his contributions to the equality fight are worth Americans of all races celebrating. Maybe someday you will get it but even if you don't I am so thankful that the rest of us can appreciate and celebrate his legacy.

  • adrakedavis Jan 18, 1:36 p.m.

    Heavenly
You are right on the spot.

  • Uhavenoclu Jan 18, 1:20 p.m.

Too bad most of his followers would rather blame everything on racism and go the easy road instead of carrying out his dream.

  • awr117 Jan 18, 1:17 p.m.

    I'll be working. It isn't a holiday.

  • aspenstreet1717 Jan 18, 1:14 p.m.

Must be nice to have all the time off. Some of us have to work to pay for it.

  • fishon Jan 18, 1:11 p.m.

Our office will be working on MLK day, as will many others that are not government.

  • trekkie13 Jan 18, 1:01 p.m.

Well stated Heavenly. The truth is that MLK Day is just a poltically correct holiday.

  • beckerunc Jan 18, 12:28 p.m.

Why don't the conduct this service on Monday ?

"The governor promised to cut spending and his "first" official act was to give them a raise." superman

    Lets break this down.
    1. McCory has hired 5 staff members.
    2. One of those 5 will be taking $5 a yr. for salary.
    3. SO, of the raise that he gives to the other 4 it still does not amount to the salary the 5th person would have made. Sounds like to me and anyone with basic math skills can see that this is a cut.
    Clear?

  • wildpig777 Jan 18, 12:12 p.m.

evidently the naacp endorses the 7th day adventists...... draw your own conclusions.

  • superman Jan 18, 11:52 a.m.

tommys5 Being expensive is not the issue. The governor promised to cut spending and his "first" official act was to give them a raise. How do you think state employees and teachers feel after he gave his select few an 8% raise? His buddies are eating cake while other people dont even have bread. Remember the French Revolution! And he is the same person who wants to cut unemployment.

  • Terkel Jan 18, 11:51 a.m.

tommy5, we're going to hear about the raises for the next four years. You can spell out the math like we do in the unemployment calculation stories every week. But like the NAACP, some people will attempt to keep everyone unhappy and angry about it.

  • Terkel Jan 18, 11:49 a.m.

Like BubbaDuke, I hate people who exploit others, but especially those who exploit their "community".

BubbaDuke said nothing about color. He's not race-baiting. Anyone who adheres to The Trinity's dogma thinks very, very little of blacks. If your family kept you riled and unhappy, kept picking at the wounds of nearly 150 years ago (and upgraded it to 50 years ago because it looked like you were starting to let go of old anger), told you you were a subpar entity who had no abilities, talents or brainpower but insisted it was the neighbor's fault, would you stay in such a hateful marriage? Would you even think for a moment your family loved you?

No surprise that Bev's on the wrong side. Go to a black church and start talking about voter ID? How very offensive. Maybe she was angling for a part-time job with the NAACP.

  • tommys5 Jan 18, 11:34 a.m.

Someone commented on McCory's cabinet being expensive. If you do the math with one member not taking a salary (your selective memory kicking in)the State will be paying less than the previous adminstration paid these
    cabinet positions.

BubbaDukeforPresident, I think you made it pretty clear who a hate monger is.
eddybal........Actually, BubbaDuke is spot on. MLK was a good guy. These dummies he mentioned are just plain old parasites, just sucking blood for themselves.

  • Raleigh Rocks 1 Jan 18, 10:40 a.m.

    Great!

  • chrisnrali Jan 18, 10:35 a.m.

eddybal, actually you proved his point. Race baiting, class warfare and keeping themselves in the limelight is ALL barber, jackson and sharpe care about. RACISM GOES BOTH WAYS. Remember that.

  • eddybal Jan 18, 10:14 a.m.

BubbaDukeforPresident, I think you made it pretty clear who a hate monger is.

Will he be joined by the members of his highly-paid cabinet?
