Maybe no one complains about ageism because they know, sadly, that it won't make a difference. I got a blatant dose of it last year: every phone interview was brilliant, then they got a look at the gray hair in person and decided my skills weren't there. What can you do? Answer the next ad. Old people know this. Just a theory, could be something else entirely.

Bottom line if Bev was doing a good job, either she would have ran again (even thou she barely won last time), or Dalton would have won. Neither of those things happened. So suck it up and drive on. Things didnt get better under her. She was just a little girl playing governor

but if you look at it, not much changed overall except for a few seats. Its not near the mandate the left thinks it is. Congress was pretty much left in place. So Im thinking that even though Barry won, the people kept other things in place to make sure Barry was kept in check.

I'm not worried people will starve, but kids will be a little hungrier and people will turn to Ramen noodles instead of nutritious food, and spike their sodium or blood sugar - and end up in the emergency room - and end up getting free healthcare- and you'll complain about it.

    The cycle goes on.

Now your worried about people eating poorly? America has had an obesity problem for decades. People were making bad choices when they had money! So that dog wont hunt with that flimsy argument. Maybe if organic stuff was a little cheaper and lasted longer people might buy it. You can shop smart and healthy if you put some effort into it. Besides that, foosd prices have been rising for awhile now, because of fuel costs and everything else associated with it. But god forbid someone make a profit so they can feed their family

I see the Government has continued to cut jobs. While I don't like seeing anyone become unemployed I am ENJOYING that trend and hope to see it continue. Obama made the famous comment "the private sector is doing fine" and said governments (state mainly) were cutting jobs and thats why job gains (overall) were small. Maybe there's a degree of truth in that, but I think the Private sector STILL needs to be doing much better than it has been. Seems like North Carolina is lagging behind most states in the recovery. Hopefully those looking for work can find it.

Good catch. We keep reading about one or two builders who keep whooping it up about how they're just building building building, highest rate in whenever. But they never mention sales. I've never believed them because they make money when you buy a house, so of course they want you to think another boom is coming. What do you make of all this?

  • Terkel Jan 18, 4:23 p.m.

free2bme, then why aren't employers angrily expected to buy your food, utilities, and rent? See why I'm asking? What is it about health insurance in particular? Why are they called evil and oppressors of the worker for paying a wage and nothing more?

No one I know "gives" employers services. They sell them for a mutually-agreed upon compensation, including wages and benefits. Selling and giving aren't the same thing. Let's not try to make everyone pretend that employees don't get paid.

    Crumps Br0ther

Not sure what all this comment means, but plenty of older folks have been laid off in NC, or asked to retire early. If you complain, you don't get a good reference, and most of us need at least a few good years of income to retire because of the lousy economy. You get a halfway decent severance, but then no one will hire you because of your age, or antiquated skills, or false teeth, whatever. I'd agree on your racism comment, certainly seen that, not sure what the others mean exactly.

    vinylcarwraps23

Working under the table and working in a profession are quite different. Why has he lost his job 3 times? I've got no problem with felons working, but try talking most employers into paying you adequately and keeping you around if anything goes wrong. I'll travel to make a decent salary and have 1 job for 4 years instead of switching every 3 months.

  • StateFan99 Jan 18, 2:47 p.m.

Let us break this down to something so simple, even conservatives can understand. Obama and dems ran 2/3 of federal gov for 2 years. Great recession slowly turns around. 2010 - Repubs take over House. McConnell obstructs. Nothing happens outside of executive orders. In NC Repubs take over GA and vote past most of Bev's vetoes. In US as a whole were there was more Dem control, the economy recovered faster than in NC where there was more republican control. Therefore: republican control = a greater intensity of economic stagnation

You left out the part where the Dems had a super majority for the first time in a LONG time in both the house and Senate during Bushs last two terms in office, which was about 9 months before everything fell apart. They controlled Congress from 2006-2010. Congress passes laws, not the President. If you insisnt on blaming a party, why don't you look in the mirror.

But everything pretty much stayed the same after the election, except for a few seats here and there. So can we assume that some folks who voted for Barry also voted for certain republicans too? There has to be a reason for that? Maybe they didnt like Romney enough but they alos want to keep Barry on a short leash too.

  • Nancy Jan 18, 2:39 p.m.

National unemployment rates still frozen in time, not good, hasn't been good and decreases are for people falling off unemployment and baby boomers retiring. That impact is big on employment numbers and well as looming health care issues which we know the government can't support no matter how high they tax businesses to pay for that 'free' health care.

Beginning January 1st, 2011 every single day more than 10,000 Baby Boomers will reach the age of 65. That is going to keep happening every single day for the next 19 years.

  • free2bme Jan 18, 2:05 p.m.

    Morrigan
It is really simply why employers should pay health insurance. They want healthy productive employees so those employees need access to the health professionals. We spend most of our time at work, giving employers the hands/actions needed to carry out what ever services they provide. Without employees, there could not be companies -basically who would actually do the work. It is ethical, common sense really to assist those workers financially with being able to get health care. If you want good productive employees, it cost. Nothing in this world is really free.

The republicans have controlled the general assembly the last two years. They were able to override a lot of Perdue's vetoes. They drove the budget. This is their baby as they sure have focused on things that will help the state's economy, like mandatory ultrasounds, voter IDs, bashing teachers, gay marriage and other unrelated issues.
