If the gun is suspected to be used in the double homicide then why is her bail set so low? She only has to come up with $1,500 to get out of jail. Makes no sense to me. If she is here illegally she could just pay bond, get out and disappear into the vast network of illegal immigrants. I would think that her bail would be set much higher. She may not have pulled the trigger but if the assault rifle is the one used than she knows who did. No excuse for aiding and abetting. Shame so many young people do not know the value of a human life. Sad times in the USA...

  • grandmadof8 Jan 24, 9:01 a.m.

"...... I'm thinking it belongs to the person who actually pulled the trigger, but they collaborated with her to hide it."

Sorry, but to me that makes her just as guilty as the shooter!

The victims family should sue the obama administration for refusing to enforce the immigration laws that they swore to uphold. This family would still be alive.apocalyptoconquistador

We don't know if they were legal now do we?

  • NCHighlander Jan 17, 4:08 p.m.

Well at least she'll be well documented now.

  • tonycheeek Jan 17, 2:07 p.m.

In one of my possible scenarios apocalyptoconquistador, the many extended family of and the victims are undocumented from El Salvador, and were killed in a home invasion with their own weapon by an American co-worker who gave the AK to the girl to hide... Very speculative!! Time will tell.

The victims family should sue the obama administration for refusing to enforce the immigration laws that they swore to uphold. This family would still be alive.

  • Terkel Jan 17, 12:02 p.m.

But tony, we don't enforce the laws against illegals.

  • Momma2three Jan 17, 11:12 a.m.

No address available, but the gun was retained from her Raleigh apartment. huh?

  • tonycheeek Jan 17, 10:14 a.m.

According to a local Spanish language newspaper the family of the deceased are trying to raise $25,000 to send the bodies of the deceased back to their native country, El Salvador.
    ~~
In the United States possession of a firearm or ammunition by an "illegal alien" (government language) is a federal offense punishable by up to 10 years in jail.

  • lstr Jan 17, 9:07 a.m.

I wonder if this was a "Fast and Furious" AK-47?

  • NCHighlander Jan 16, 7:02 p.m.

Don't ya just love a sanctuary nation?

  • CIT Jan 16, 6:42 p.m.

As usual, this isn't about the weapon. Yes, the weapon was used in the commission of the crime but the reason behind the crime is likely due to gang violence/initiation or some other asinine reason. The 3 dots tattooed by her left eye is a pretty strong indication (but not always) that she might have affiliations with a street gang. It's very common with MS13 and Los Vatos Locos members.

  • Frogm3n Jan 16, 6:19 p.m.

    lock her up....

  • dwr1964 Jan 16, 5:50 p.m.

I am just not understanding why all of you "less than intelligent" people keep using this term, "assault weapon". Any inanimate object, used in an assault, is an assault weapon. If you are trying to connect these to "assault rifles", that term is only accurate for fully automatic rifles. If you want to believe there is a connection between the two, well, then you would have to say "assault bow and arrow", "assault pistol", "assault knife" and "assault vehicle". Then there is the assault bat, slingshot, chain and so many other things people have used over the course of time. Should we ban all of these also? You people are just so darn less than intelligent.

  • anastasia Jan 16, 5:46 p.m.

I read all these comments, hoping to discover something new about this horrible crime that left two children orphans. All I've found is numerous arguements about gun control and referring to this weapon as a 'weapon of mass destruction.'

  • nascar33 Jan 16, 4:53 p.m.

So a rifle is now a "weapon of mass destruction"? That's ridiculous

  • grimreaper Jan 16, 4:46 p.m.

"Just exactly what is a "weapon of mass destruction"? --paule

North Carolina statutes define it as unlawful use, possession, etc of a machine gun, explosive, short barreled rifle, short barreled shotgun, silencer, etc...it should be noted that these things are not illegal to own or use in NC...the laws definition covers illegal aspects of use, ownership, manufacture etc...also, almost ZERO ak-47s in the entire country are machine guns...and the few that are have been regulated and tracked by the Feds since 1968...they are also ungodly expensive to buy...this aint Hollywood...there are not thousands of criminals running amok with machine guns like on TV...totally untrue...if she indeed had a fully automatic AK then that is a rarity for sure...Oh, and exactly ZERO crimes have been committed in 50 years with machine guns registered to law abiding citizens after the ban...ZERO...

  • Goalieman Jan 16, 4:45 p.m.

Also funny how all stories contain military style weapons now. Isn't that funny since that's what Obama is trying to focus on?

  • Goalieman Jan 16, 4:43 p.m.

Better watch out, your family dog will soon be considered a weapon of mass destruction!

  • OneLove Jan 16, 4:43 p.m.

Just exactly what is a "weapon of mass destruction"? --- C'mon Paulej! A weapon that causes destruction on a massive scale!

  • Mustange Jan 16, 4:42 p.m.

I think knows a good time that if you have a gun and its not legal might better make it legal if its in your posession. If its a hand gun go get it strait. Its not hard to go and have it put in your name.

  • Bartmeister Jan 16, 4:42 p.m.

MS 13 was started in the USA

Huh? What? Better head for the hills............

  • Paul M Jan 16, 4:24 p.m.

I Read it again and it still dosnt say anything about her conected to the murder just that she has the gun. Hope most of you are not Lawyers

  • killing_me_softly Jan 16, 4:05 p.m.

Gemby Itzamar Estrada, no address available...
An arrest warrant states that deputies seized the weapon, a variation of an AK-47, from Estrada's Raleigh apartment...

    Huh?

  • grimreaper Jan 16, 4:04 p.m.

"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." John Adams

  • paulej Jan 16, 4:04 p.m.

Just exactly what is a "weapon of mass destruction"? To my mind, the things that qualify there are atomic bombs and such. Perhaps non-nuclear military missiles ... But a gun?

  • OneLove Jan 16, 3:55 p.m.

Military-style assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine of the sort used in massacres. -------- sure SOUNDS like a weapon of mass destruction.

  • fl2nc2ca2md2nc Jan 16, 3:45 p.m.

"An illegal in possession of an illegal weapon. Wonder how those executive orders are addressing this. Oh, thats right, its just to punish law abiding American citizens." jlhpcarew

Best comment I've seen here. It's never about getting tough on the criminal element, it's always a knee-joik reaction to take something from the law abiding citizen.

  • immaannoid Jan 16, 3:37 p.m.

"charges with possession of a weapon of mass destruction " what a load a baloney.

Unless it is full auto I don't see how they can make those charges stick. What a scam by law enforcement.

I would not convict her of that charge.

  • Hans Jan 16, 3:27 p.m.

Come on, media, you're slipping. Military-style assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine of the sort used in massacres.
    Get your lingo right!

  • corey3rd2 Jan 16, 2:48 p.m.

Woman just wanted to go varmit hunting.

  • Nancy Jan 16, 2:22 p.m.

Darn criminals, never abiding by the law and getting guns illegally. Shame on them!

  • novacrazy2000 Jan 16, 2:20 p.m.

The law can say anything is a weapon of mass destruction I have heard of a man in sanford getting charged with a weapon of mass destruction once. and it was a garden rake. just because he tried to hit sonmeone with it.

  • novacrazy2000 Jan 16, 2:17 p.m.

It doesn't say the gun is linked to the shooting thay just took it because it could have been( no proof)why? just because she had it. One day the police will be knocking on your door to see if you have one so they can take it.

  • a420a240 Jan 16, 2:14 p.m.

It wasn't necessarily FA, it could have just had a barrel shorter than 16" and/or less than 26" overall length. Both of those classifications would allow it to become a WMD without proper Class III stamps.

  • Tazz Danger Jan 16, 2:01 p.m.

It was a full auto. Thus weapon of mass destruction charges. It is a big difference between a full auto that can fire 700 round a min and an ar15 from walmart. There is gun controls that prevent her from getting this kind a weapon. How did she get it. Same way bad guys will get anything once an ar ban is put in place. Bad guys get what they want

  • 75Tarheel Jan 16, 2:00 p.m.

This girl is 5'3" tall and 124 pounds. I'm betting she handle a lot of things including an AK-47. Look at the civil wars in Africa where elementary kids are carrying AND using them.

    Case closed.

  • fungod12000 Jan 16, 1:58 p.m.

If the AK has full auto fire, that would make it a weapon of mass destruction.

  • 75Tarheel Jan 16, 1:48 p.m.

Since you don't the definition, nor the facts of the weapon - that should be of some "conerndNCC".

  • Crumps Br0ther Jan 16, 1:40 p.m.

I can't believe a 19 year old girl could even handle an AK-47 (she probably is not very big) ..

Im a veteran and have seen females handle weapons from M-16 to SAW's(squad assualt(yes that scary word again)weapon) with no problems. Just saying.

  • 75Tarheel Jan 16, 1:39 p.m.

    * 75Tarheel * It dosnt say she was connected, ONLY that she MIGHT have the weapon that did the crime. Why must you read whats not in there ?

40 and 45 Cal to carry

The mere possession of a weapon of mass destruction or a weapon used in a homicide is a violation of the GS of N.C. Like I said, they went in with a search warrant which requires more than mere suspicioin, there must be evidence which will cause a reasonable and prudent person to believe a crime has been committed IE PROBABLE CAUSE.

You think the WCSO went to her apt. by accident or because she may be an illegal alien?

What don't you read the entire article?

  • rmsmith Jan 16, 1:34 p.m.

A 12 year old kid can shoot an AK-47 / SKS rifle (semi-auto) I'd seriously doubt this was a selective fire rifle

  • ImtheBadGuy Jan 16, 1:28 p.m.

If she was charged with possessing a weapon of mass destruction under NC law, that means it was converted to full auto.Sawed off shotguns with a barrel under 18in. also fall under this law. What a surprise that these things weren't reported on and clarified.

  • ThomasL Jan 16, 1:25 p.m.

Looks like a "criminal"got there hands on a ak47,how could this be?Didn't they do a background check?Oh that's right criminals detour that part and either steal them or getem from there buddies.

  • Save It Jan 16, 1:24 p.m.

"I can't believe a 19 year old girl could even handle an AK-47 (she probably is not very big) ...... "

9 year-olds in Somalia can handle an AK-47.

  • WageSlave Jan 16, 1:23 p.m.

I can't believe a 19 year old girl could even handle an AK-47 (she probably is not very big) .....
    PanthersFan45

More people have been killed with that frame than any other. What do you think 10 year olds in Africa under drug lords are running around with?

  • PanthersFan45 Jan 16, 1:12 p.m.

Maybe someone has already commented on this, but if the weapon was found in her apartment it doesn't mean that she was the shooter. I can't believe a 19 year old girl could even handle an AK-47 (she probably is not very big) ...... I'm thinking it belongs to the person who actually pulled the trigger, but they collaborated with her to hide it. Yes I know I could be totally wrong but I think there's more to the story. If she turns out to be here illegally she would probably settle for a deportation over a murder trial in the USA.

  • Tax Man Jan 16, 12:58 p.m.

If she was here legally wouldn't she show up in the social security database? How hard is it to check? At least they are checking.

  • ConcernedNCC Jan 16, 12:52 p.m.

This charging people who have a rifle with possessing a "weapon of mass destruction" shows that the DAs aren't very intelligent.

  • ncouterbanks69 Jan 16, 12:31 p.m.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed a detainer on Estrada – under the name Itzamar Estrada Gembe – while agents try to determine if she is in the country illegally.

    Is there really a question????
