Let’s face it, this driver's license thing is just one aspect of a much larger 20th century issue that has slopped over into the 21st century and the time has come to finally resolve it. A new worldwide book/ebook explains the role, struggles, and contributions of immigrants and minorities: "What Foreigners Need To Know About America From A To Z: How to understand crazy American culture, people, government, business, language and more." Endorsed by ambassadors, educators, and editors, it paints a revealing picture of America on numerous subjects for those who will benefit from a better understanding.

Immigrants and the children they bear account for 60 percent of our nation's population growth and are 60 percent more likely to start a new business than native-born Americans. It identifies "foreigners" who became successful in the US and contributed to our society. However, most struggle in their efforts and need guidance if they are to contribute. whats the need of all these comments full of hate and greed, in what way do illegal immigrants bother us citizens. They're blamed for crime and violence, blamed for taking our jobs. I'm almost sure that everyone leaving comments have a job, but yet they seem to be upset that illegals are taking all of our jobs. Monster.com, career builder.com, indeed.com, simplyhired.com, glassdoor.com, and many many more websites with thousands of jobs listed that us citizens don't get. why not?? maybe because we don't have a degree for it? Well, we could actually go out there and get educated because we have the right and that privilege, or maybe we don't take the jobs because we simply don't like it, or simply because we are LAZY, and want to earn money the easy way. Come on, lets stop been so hateful and greedy, everyone deserves a chance, especially this young people that were brought up here when they were little and now are eager to move up in life and get educated and live a normal life.

So, these groups endorse our government's efforts to take from its citizens to assist non-citizens. What's next, taking from its citizens to aide foriegn nations? Oh, we already do that but we usually get something in return (treaty, goods, access, etc). What are we getting from these non-citizens, or what are we doing to prevent this from happening again? Removing birthrite citizenship? Penalizing Mexico for lack crossing patrols and for actually endorsing illegal crossings?
Granting something for purely political gain, which is what Obama is doing, is unpatriotic.

"Everyone screams to high heaven about illegals and them following the law to get legal status. This is a case of them being able to get legal status and the state of NC deciding not to recognize it." la tigrita

No, it isn't a case of "them being able to get legal status." Unless you think having a DL confers citizenship. It's a story about bigots trying to get a free pass because of skin color.

  • dakg Jan 15, 12:08 p.m.

The ACLU and N.C. Justice Center wrote in its letter that the effected immigrants are "legally present" in the U.S. and are eligible to obtain all the information the DMV needs to issue licenses, including Social Security numbers.

These special intrest groups are indeed masters of the "spin"! These people are not here legally! There parents brought them here illegally. Now our so called commander in chief...oh I am sorry...King Obama wants to giove them all amnesty. That does not make them here legally! They should have to do it the right way...just like my family members did back in the day. This country is going to H-E double hockey sticks in a handbasket!

  • cjw6105 Jan 15, 11:57 a.m.

    Keep voting Democrat, folks.

It's why we're having this conversation right now.

  • puzzled Jan 15, 11:25 a.m.

These special interest groups are part the problem with the US. Rules should apply to everyone the same and not different for special groups.

  • NomoreKoolaid Jan 15, 11:22 a.m.

Tens of millions without a job or a job with a livable wage now and you are going to have to compete with tens of millions of ILLEGAL invaders given AMNESTY for votes......WE ARE DOOMED.

  • Rebelyell55 Jan 15, 11:14 a.m.

There is most likely more to this story than meets the eye. Several don't seem to understand ya got to have insurance to get a license. This is why we're forced to pay extra for insurance because those driving around without insurance now. What should not happen is to give the driver test in spanish, since our signs are in english. Since this is for younger folks, they certainly should know how to speak english. No problem with them getting a legal driver license. Better than the illegal driver licenses, no insurance, and certainly no knowledge of the rules.

  • JohnnyVoodoo Jan 15, 10:30 a.m.

Yeah yeah, I can hear it now. But Johnny.. calm down, this story isn't about illegal immigrants, it's about those children who can't help if their parents are illegal. Well guess what, if they're parents are illegal, then the kids have to go back with 'em across the border and get in line like the rest of those who do it the right way. Period.

  • JohnnyVoodoo Jan 15, 10:10 a.m.

What a slap in the face to those immigrants who have "took a number and got in line" to do it the legal way in order to come here and try to better themselves. It's the equivalent of someone breaking in line amongst others who have been there for hours, months, or even years. Why don't they just get rid of the border patrol and open the flood gates? Unbelievable.

  • JohnnyVoodoo Jan 15, 10:06 a.m.

For the life of me, I can NOT understand why we keep catering to these illegal aliens. Why do we continue, on a daily basis, to roll out the red carpet for those who broke the law as soon as they crossed the border here? Why are the benefiting from our country while those of us here are having to sacrifice just to keep our heads above water? Press 1 for spanish or stay on the line...labels on food in spanish and english...billboards in spanish... take a continuing education english class at the local commmunity college and it's free, take a spanish course, and it's a hundred bucks or more. You gotta be kiddin' me! I love this country, but we're losing it right before our very eyes to an illegal segment of our population who have no desire to assimilate into the American culture and are killing us via the quality/depletion of healthcare, social programs, criminal justice system...not to mention tax fraud and social security I.D. fraud. When is enough...enough?

"being able to get legal status and being in the country legal are two different issues"

Actually not according to Durham and Chapel Hill the self proclaimed sanctuary cities.

    http://www.sanctuarycities.info/sanctuary_state_north_carolina.htm

  • lopo Jan 15, 9:56 a.m.

That would be easy, just mail the license to their legal residence in Mexico.

  • 68_dodge_polara Jan 15, 9:51 a.m.

Remember if they don't have a drivers license they can not purchase insurance and not having a licence doesn't seem to stop anyone from driving. This becomes is really important when they hit you.

  • Bob3425 Jan 15, 9:39 a.m.

"being able to get legal status" and being in the country legal are two different issue. They should be return with their parent and wait for legal entry (The parent cause this). What Obama did here was wrong. Illegal have broken many US law and continue to do so, unless your ready to pardon other criminal., ie: like the ones in prison for breaking into a house or business. If not illegal should be deported and the ones that hire them should bear the cost.

  • Relic Jan 15, 9:30 a.m.

" those who arrived to the U.S. before they turned 16, are under age 31 and have graduated high school, attended college or served in the military."

We're not talking "illegal immigrants" here folks. If you're spending money to go to college and you fought in the military I got no problem with them having a driver's license. I just wish more "native" North Carolinians would go out and GET a driver's license and valid insurance or stop driving after theirs has been revoked.

  • latigrita Jan 15, 9:26 a.m.

We want all the this for them but what about our service members? Do not see the ACLU helping them out.

  • bngexpress Jan 15, 9:20 a.m.

obey the law , become a citizen the correct manner , then they will reap the rewards of being an American citizen , until then no matter the circumstance they are still criminal immigrants and should be deported. period. that's the law.

  • Turd Peanut Jan 15, 8:23 a.m.

This deal is temporary. One of our Lord Obama's many executive orders and will be void at the end of his term. TEMPORARY.

  • immaannoid Jan 15, 8:21 a.m.

Illegal aliens have no Constitutional right to a license, welfare, or an education.

    They are not "legally present".

  • br549znc Jan 15, 8:19 a.m.

    Ah, NO.

  • Snakebite Survivor Jan 15, 8:04 a.m.

I'm amazed (and saddened) at all the mean-spirited comments here. These people are at present legally allowed to be in the country and they are legally entitled to study and work. And most of them did not come here of their own choice. In many other states they are issued driver's licenses. What conceivable advantage is gained by denying them licenses in North Carolina?

  • sunshine1040 Jan 14, 7:51 p.m.

What part of illegal do some people not understand, It means against the law. If you are 16 you are old enough to read your birth certificate and if you can not read it then you do not need a drivers license

  • paultaylorsr100 Jan 14, 7:48 p.m.

  • TVs_Deceit Jan 14, 6:47 p.m.

Before someone lobbies for the "rights" of the illegally present, they should have to try and support their family in an occupation like construction, where, if you can find a job, your wages are half of what they should be because the labor market is flooded with illegally present workers.

You'll sing a different tune when it's -your- livelihood that's harmed by cheap and abundant labor flooding the market.

  • chrisnrali Jan 14, 6:34 p.m.

    reinstate them? NO!

  • garciavic77 Jan 14, 6:29 p.m.

They let TPS(Temporary Protected Status) holders, obtain a driver's license, but not DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) holders. Which both statuses are pretty much the same. Plus how is someone with a work permit supposed to get to work?! It's so senseless!

  • alphabaker Jan 14, 6:28 p.m.

just say 'no' go home to the country you were born in. if you want to be here do it legally !

  • Nancy Jan 14, 6:26 p.m.

20 million legal residents unemployed, 20 million illegals, you do the math.

  • Uhavenoclu Jan 14, 6:22 p.m.

ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL NO EXCEMTIONS......You get the same sentence if you are a passenger in a car and didn't know what the driver was going to do.
This is why the economy is so messed up and why more AMERICANS are out of work...Send the civil groups back with them.

  • Terkel Jan 14, 5:52 p.m.

It was a memorandum from 0bama, passed on 6-15-12 and implemented by DHS (who also brought us the TSA).

From Wiki: "74% of the eligible population, were born in Mexico or Central America. Others come from Caribbean and South America (11%), Asia (9%), and the rest of the world (6%)."

I don't recall seeing it up on the "Three Days for All Citizens to Examine Each New Bill" website.

  • PanthersFan45 Jan 14, 5:51 p.m.

"Until recently, the DMV had been granting licenses to those who had been granted a two-year work permit under the federal program but stopped until it received a legal opinion from the state attorney general."

Somewhere the line needs to be drawn. "Legally present" with a work permit does not sound like a permanent resident to me. The parents of these kids are the ones to blame, not the DMV. Do things legally and don't put your kids in the middle ..... its hard to feel sorry for those who knowingly broke the law to come here.

  • affirmativediversity Jan 14, 5:43 p.m.

Seriously, would someone tell me where one of these ACLU lawyers live so I can walk into their home so they'll have to legally provide me medical care along with feeding, clothing, housing and educating me? That's a sweet deal. All I have to do is cross the threshold and, shazzam, I'm their new dependent.
    per TV_D_Seat

Now there's an interesting idea...wonder if it could happen on a national protest scale...like Occupy ACLU Lawyer Homes?

  • Disabled Vet Jan 14, 5:39 p.m.

Since when did they start using a drivers license or insurance as a requirement for illegals to drive?

  • lwe1967 Jan 14, 5:38 p.m.

If they are illegal they are not entitled to a driver's license here. If they do not have a green card, or a work permit, they should not be driving on a state license. They can get an International Driver's license. Illegals should make every effort to get that green card, so they can be here legally.

  • affirmativediversity Jan 14, 5:37 p.m.

A driver's license is a privilege, not a right. Let them get a license from whatever country they hail from...Oh and some insurance too.

  • Terkel Jan 14, 5:35 p.m.

"I think its pretty pathetic that our country will allow foreign born persons to serve in our military yet will not even give those people a driver's license..." t watts

We allow foreign-born persons who are here legally to have drivers licenses. But we're talking about illegals. Not the same thing.

twitts1000... "I think its pretty pathetic that our country will allow foreign born persons to serve in our military yet will not even give those people a driver's license..."

twitts1000, totally agree. They shouldn't be allowed to serve in the military. That is a right and duty of American citizens. To allow them to do so is to make them little more than insolvent mercenaries. Instead they should be deported and forced to enter the country legally. The generous thing to do is to not put them in jail first for the crimes they have committed, but rather to just deport them.
