We can only blame ourselves for their criminal state of mind. We are the enablers of their culture here in America. "Come on over and live illegally. We'll grant you amnesty and give you whatever you want." That is exactly how we've approached this community instead of locking down the border and acting like they have done something wrong. We reap what we sow.

You go Chief,, and Barbour get a life, away from a buffet

"Well if he isnt the best Tio Thomas!! It is rediculous to call out one race for the issues in Durham. Durham has had the reputation for being the hub of criminal activity since I can remember. What are there no black, asian or white gang or criminal activity in Durham only Latino?" -NiceNSmooth

Did you read the story, particularly the last paragraph? He focused on the Latino community because he is Latino himself, and never suggested that the problem is limited to Latinos only.

Chief Lopez's message is timely and well placed. How many white children were kept from doing wrong by strong parenting? How many black children ? Its an American tradition to strengthen the responsiblities of the family unit and this message is important for the relatively new and arriving latino families to hear. This is an American tradition we hope translates.

The sad part is that it'll most likely fall on death ears.

Gonna give credit where it's due, and Chief Lopez gets all the credit in the world for calling out the Latino community. This is something that i've been waiting for Barber to do within the black community, but he hasn't even denounced the violent and sensless killing of the innocent white victim by the hands of the Wilmington 3. Only when the Latino and Black communities admit first that they even have a problem...will they begin to address the problem. Again, Chief Lopez stepped up to the plate and deserves credit for it.

100% correct, untill you talk about the problem, the problem will be swept under the rug

  • Terkel Jan 14, 10:50 a.m.

To be "real" and truthful, the Chief is talking about latinos, no one else. For once, leave out the part where whites get blamed.

  • Terkel Jan 14, 10:44 a.m.

Awwwwwwww. Was the letter "hurtful" to latinos? GOOD!

"We know there are probably some parents that need a little more guidance, but this is a responsibility of the whole community," she said (volunteer), in an attempt to blame everyone but the parents and kids.

Be sure of one thing: when community organizers say "the responsibility of the community", they mean "we want taxpayer money."

"Probably"? "a little"? "the responsibility of the whole community"? This simpering person is the very face of the problem.

If it were the white population of our society committing the most violent crimes, then I would be stepping up to the plate and calling them out myself. Having just said that, pull up the latest Wake County arrests section and take a look for yourself and tell me what the most common denominator is. Of course, it only shows what they're charged with and doesn't mean they're necesserily guilty, so I get that. Nevertheless, i'm not talking about national statistics, i'm talking about what's going on right here in the local communities we live in.

He also needs to look at his dept. I had a break-in last week. It took 2 hrs for someone to respond ,3 calls to 911,Officer who responded said they had a total of 4 units for all of District 2. Plus total apathy from people who answer the phones.

It's not only minories that cause problems that's what the problelm is as well pointing the finger at certain races it's all races that do wrong cause problems it's not just mornorities in jail so be real and truthful.

He is so right, it starts at home with every race they should step up and speak out for the community any where to get better.

  • aetius476 Jan 14, 9:07 a.m.

Here is someone on the front lines speaking truth. Of course he will get bashed by the apologists for parental irresponsibility and the broken family society.

Thanks for calling the problem what it is. We need more like you rather than hucksters like Willy Barber, who want to perpetuate the staus quo, and blame everyone else but those responsible.

  • daddyankee Jan 14, 8:46 a.m.

This is amazing and honorable. A minority leader asking his own community to step up an take responsibility for some of its ills. If only the other minority community in Durham had such leadership.

  • tgentry1005 Jan 14, 8:36 a.m.

It’s about time someone in leadership spoke up and jumped on parents for the trouble their children are causing! The ONLY exception I take to his comments is they were not directed to ALL parents of ALL races but I understand he was uncomfortable and choose his own race. It is time for all leadership to call a spade a spade because the authorities are not going to get control until parents get control at home and that starts at birth!

Liberals need to stop blaming society or everybody else for problems in the home and start telling it like it is that individuals must take RESPONSIBILITY for their own actions, their own lives and their own family first and foremost.

    Keep it up Chief!
