For those of you wondering why these types of incendiary stories guaranteed to bring out the good ol boys from under every rock are so common here, think about it. What kind of article is guaranteed to generate the most virulent response from people? What brings out the emotions rather than the reason? What is guaranteed to generate POSTS and return VISITS to this site over and over again? As soon as the photos are posted and the words "crime" or similar are included in the headline, you are GUARANTEED a huge response from every "person of high moral standing" who is of the opinion that anyone unlike them in design or configuration must be less of a human. And what does SITE TRAFFIC do? It INCREASES the REVENUE STREAM of the site owner. The more traffic to a web site, NO MATTER OF WHAT TYPE, will create numbers that the site owner can now parade in front of prospective advertisers. So your comments are filling their pockets. Keep up the good work!

Sorry, I just don't see how owning a gun alone would have helped this couple. Unless you sleep with a loaded gun under your pillow which is not a smart idea. What would have helped was an alarm system or a dog. This would have alerted them first so they could get the gun if they had one. The number one deterent to robbers is a dog. Any dog. They just don't want the hassle of dealing with one. The dog would have started barking as soon as the glass was broken. Trixie

Doing it your way worked out so well for them. No dog. No gun. Later the police come and do a report. I have another idea.

bfry40 I meant our new Governor Pat Mccrory who just moved into the executive mansion on Jones and Person, NO disrespect , ALL of our leaders and citizens alike deserve a safe place to live and sleep at night. Saying this because I hope that the discussion of the state of our neighborhoods is opened and hashed out without racism and with real solutions for the presrnt and future. You better believe I know our mayor is a woman and I knew our Governor Perdue, as well am closely aware of the city and county government , and VERY VERY suportive of our police. That said, you gonna question whether I VOTE?? I sure do! I AM HAPPY WITH THE 2012 outcome, and filled with respect. I also know more about guns than most people do in this lifetime. AND live in the Oak-hood. Caring about the people who live here , civil rights and human rights and keeping it real is my every day. Life is precious, not always fair. I pray healing will come, and justice.

"Prosecutors say the man could be paralyzed."

I met a guy in a nursing home. He was in a motorized wheelchair. He told me he was attacked by several young men who liked a gold chain he had around his neck. He was kicked in the head, breaking his neck. He told me that police caught the attackers and they all went to jail, seven years I think he said.

They are all out of jail now, and he will be in that wheelchair for the rest of his life, with limited use of one hand. The doctors were surprised that he regained any use of his hand.

Yessireee. That punishment fit the crime.

  • charmcclainlovesdogs2 Jan 10, 3:53 p.m.

These criminals should be locked up for 60 years without parole.

  • chairmannc Jan 10, 3:30 p.m.

Another case of criminals commiting crimes when they should have been locked up for the ones they commited previously. Something is very wrong with our legal system if you ask me - it's hard for me to call it our "justice" system when justice is seldom achieved.

  • itsmyownopinion Jan 10, 2:01 p.m.

All I have time to say is throw the book at these two. It's a shame people can't feel safe in their own home. I'm sad to know the man who was shot may be paralyzed for life.

  • gr8dad Jan 10, 1:56 p.m.

Why in God's name was Shabar out on the street? He broke into a home and robbed someone at gunpoint on Dec 11. Charge the judge who allowed him bond as an accessory to this week's break-in and shooting. I hope the family sues the judge for millions. What good is a "bond" to a man who may now be paralyzed for the rest of his life because a lame judge let Shabar back on the street.

  • bubbasu1 Jan 10, 1:36 p.m.

Why do we have a system that keeps giving criminals numerous chances before they lock them up. I say do away with the 3 strikes. They know the system, they know they will get away with alot before they face any consequences. Kind of like the parent that keeps yelling at their child and threatening various consequences if the child doesn't stop whatever it is that is casuing a problem, threats they never follow through with, rules they never enforce, consequences that are never felt by the child.

  • HANS FOR PRESIDENT!!!!! JK Jan 10, 1:28 p.m.

Ditto 4 strikes. My guns won't guarantee I'll never become a victim but at I will say if you break in my house where my wife and children sleep and I get the drop on you....game over

This was an unfortunate incident this couple had to encounter. Why are the comments focused on race? Race has nothing to do with what we can consider these criminals."----from da south

Perhaps everyone is looking at their record which shows them to be just as people are posting? Lifelong criminals, animals. Race has nothing to do with that. Holmes had never been arrested, i.e. not expected to do this. These guys records show that is all they know.

  • baitdude Jan 10, 12:45 p.m.

12/11/2012 "Shabar Marshall was charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, possession of stolen property and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon." South Carolina, "Jahaad Marshall has a criminal history that includes armed robbery and arson charges, including a 2008 case in South Carolina, in which he was accused of holding a couple at gunpoint and stealing their cellphone, credit cards, money and car" Why... exactly, were they not in jail/prison? With both of them using a "dangerous weapon", I don't understand why they both were not in custody of the state or federal government. Can anyone answer that?

  • RM24 Jan 10, 12:37 p.m.

It was on their website all summer. Hundreds of complaints on FB also. I havnt looked lately. Maybe they removed it once they saw how dangerous it was

"God created man to rule over animals, so these defendants are not animals. Unfortunately, they choose the wrong path and must pay the penalty." - csui

The fact that they sexually assaulted and attempted to rape a woman in her own home, at gunpoint, tells me they ARE animals.

If they were just out to steal, that is one thing. Raping and sexually molesting your victims, is a whole other level of depravity and evil.

Yes, they are little more than brute animals, and should be treated as such...

  • cocker_mom Jan 10, 12:28 p.m.

    4strikes - I agree 100% - good post.

  • cocker_mom Jan 10, 12:27 p.m.

aetius476 - no one would be able to get into my house silently either. Usually - B&E are crimes of opportunity. Take away the opportunity and you don't become a victim. Criminals are by nature pretty lazy. If you have a dog, security lights, an alarm, really secure doors and windows, etc - they will look to the next house that does not.

It can be as simple as a crazy audible alarm that hands on your door that is motion activated that can scare off an intruder (or those menacing ADT people!)

Take a look at your home and please do the simple things to secure it. It's a terrible statement that you HAVE to do this - but - you do. the first line of defense is securing your home - and anyone uncomfortable getting a gun, or not wanting a dog - this is an easy and inexpensive first step that will do a lot to keep you safe.

No sympathy for these criminals. Hopefully - they are both at strike three and can be put away for good.

  • 4Strikes Jan 10, 12:19 p.m.

Protect yourself people. Remember when seconds count, the police are only minutes away. I am not bashing the police, but they can't be everywhere at all times. With the environment created by liberals, the economy will continue to plummet and crime will continue to rise. Soon the government will try to disarm you, don't let them.

For those nit pickers out there, I am not saying that buying a gun is the only thing that you should do..learn how to use it, protect your home with an alarm that will alert you if there is an intruder, buy a dog. To each their own, but I and my family will protect ourselves. Anyone breaking into my house while any of us are at home has a good chance of being carried out.

  • pelosi-rulz Jan 10, 12:19 p.m.

    Angry guy*

Of course they are not going to talk to these criminals parents.

If one of them were whit then I bet they would..like zimmerman, they knew the race of both his parents and kept calling them white whenone was not.

  • vile garbage Jan 10, 12:12 p.m.

I saw a cool way to scare people off if you think you hear something outside your home. Most cars today have panic buttons on the keyless entry remote. Sleep with your vehicle keys beside your bed and if you hear something hit the panic button, your car horn will began honking and the lights will flash. Noone will stay around with that drawing so much attention. I just thought It was a great idea!

  • bfry40 Jan 10, 12:07 p.m.

cubacarolinda, you stated the mayor lives a few streets away, he and his family sleep well at night. How do you deduce that? Oh, by the way, the mayor is a woman. I assume you did vote.

They're wastes of space regardless of race or creed. Race has nothing to do with what we can consider these criminals. Take Holmes that gunned the people down in the theater in Co., He too is a waste of space and unbelieveable that it's possible to "defend" such scum.

  • Terkel Jan 10, 11:41 a.m.

What does this have to do with Obama? LOL!!! What, there were no crimes by young black men until he was elected? Just like the welfare system wasn't broken before 2008! Please! We still have the death penalty but people are on death row for over 20 years. Get rid of them and then there will be more room. Slap on the wrist is for first offenders in small crimes. Shooting people and raping women need to be put away forever but they will use the race card for sure they always do.

  • JustOneGodLesThanU Jan 10, 10:57 a.m.

No attempts by the media to track down and question the parents of the 16 year old? I'd really like to know their explanation for why their 16 year old is (allegedly) out running around robbing and raping at 3am.

"How come 30 whites killed in a school are more important than 500 almost all blacks killed in chicago? Race"---pelosi-rulz

The real answer is much worse. The reason that stuff like that is not reported is because it is typical. Not enough time in a broadcast to cover the usual crime like that.

  • rmsmith Jan 10, 10:48 a.m.

These individuals should of been locked up but instead, liberal lawyers and liberal court systems allowed them to roam free.

Once again, politicians focus on guns versus the criminal element. Make the punishment so severe that it makes a criminal afraid of breaking the law. Prison should be prison and not a country club

  • Terkel Jan 10, 10:45 a.m.

"Nothing will change until we stop pretending that these worthless individuals will ever amount to anything. "

pelosi-rulz: "How come 30 whites killed in a school are more important than 500 almost all blacks killed in chicago? Race."

"..of the killer." It's cause for punishing the entire population when a white guy does it, but a black guy's just a victim himself. The kind of victim that makes other victims, but nonetheless...

  • farm Jan 10, 10:34 a.m.

slp1076" was it because that was not in a fancy rich downtown neighborhood that it was not a big media story?"

Not sure why. Maybe because the neighbors in that area did not rally behind the victim? Maybe because the victim was not paralyzed... or maybe it is because the neighborhood this time is fancy rich and downtown.

  • Bellar1 Jan 10, 10:31 a.m.

One partial solution is obvious-- stop filling our prisons with non-violent drug dealers and users and keep these violent criminals put away until they're old and gray.

"4) consider a shotgun - but - again - that is useless if they manage to get into your bedroom before you are awakened." - cocker_mom

There is NO WAY someone could break into my home by forcible entry at night and not awaken me. How did these fine young black males enter the place? Breaking windows or kicking in locked doors makes a lot of noise!

Secure your premesis, sleep with your bedroom door open. Keep a firearm handy near the bed (unless you have kids). Have a cell phone in your bedroom.

Sad, but this is the reality of the society we have created...

  • Jbmat Jan 10, 10:19 a.m.

Life without in prison. Enjoy your stay.

  • feistyredhead2001 Jan 10, 10:15 a.m.

People,if you are the wrong color and think living in the old downtown areas doesn't make you a target you are not very smart.Historic or not that area is know to be not great. These young tuffs nowdays watch for easy targets including older victims and disabled. Be aware of your surroundings and install door and window alarms available at lowes and video systems available at comp usa along with outdoor lights, ask the police ,lights are one of the best theft deterrents.

Where are all the black leaders on this subject,, it certainly does not get in the news of thier involvement, but at a drop of a hat,, will be on a white on black crime??

  • dsalter Jan 10, 10:06 a.m.

All this...and the recent case of the lady in Georgia who defended herself and two kids with a .38 revolver, and yet there are those weak minded...brainwashed...individuals out there who tend to believe the Castle Doctrine is wrong, and there is no place for a legal concealed carry weapon in this society. That having a legal firearm for protection and prevention is pure fantasy. YEAH...RIGHT!!!

As I live with my husband and son a few blocks away from where this tragic crime happened, this is especially horryfing to us. Unfortunately the amount of serious crime in our area is not small, everyday there are events probably related to drugs. Our son goes to the college at the top of the hill, Saint Augustine's, we think of how important it is to keep the students who come from all over the world safe and protected as well as every citizen of our beautiful neighborhoods and city. Our new mayor lives but a few streets from here too, he and his family are secure when they sleep. We must all get involved in making our cities safer and lowering our countries crime so we too can rest as well. Arming more people will not do this, but getting guns off the streets and not releasing anyone who has used a weapon, keeping track of offenders is a step towards cutting our loss. This week had many many violent events, we need to turn this around. Praying for our neighbors, and all of us.

Does anyone think it is odd that the similar home invasion committed by the 16 year old was not major news? It sounds like in that case, he entered a home in the middle of the night, held a woman at gunpoint and robbed her - was it because that was not in a fancy rich downtown neighborhood that it was not a big media story?

And for all the people saying "if they were black victims", or "why isn't this getting more media attention, because they're white?"- the fact that you're reading about it is evidence enough that it was reported. News outlets don't report often when blacks or latinos rob blacks or latinos.
