I'm ok with regulating guns like cars.

    - you can take your car to any school and government building
    - you can drive a car at 16, so 16 year olds should be able to own guns just like cars
    - teach gun ed like driver's ed in schools
    - banks should offer 4-6 year gun loans just like cars
    - can't afford a gun? Lease one!
    - the Dems want to give driver licenses to illegal aliens, so illegal aliens should be able to own guns
    - convicted felons can own cars so they should be able to own guns - you don't need a background check to buy a car so you shouldn't need one to buy a gun - you don't need license to registration to own a car if you don't use it on a public street, same should be for guns

"Let's have the same restrictions on guns as we do cars." - Plenty Coups

Let's not. While I can concede some restrictions and laws, stuff like insurance and annual inspections goes a bit far. If you want SERIOUS discussion on the issue, propose sensible ideas.

"I feel its nuts not to tightly regulate guns as much as we do cars." - Plenty Coups

How often do you encounter cars versus a gun?

    Another topic and not true.

  • yelnatsthegreat Jan 4, 7:57 p.m.

A loser like this who is already a felon, who commits a crime with a gun, should be put away for life without the possibility of release... Those are the only new gun laws that are acceptable!

A good reason to make them illegal.

They were used in the recent mall shooting, the Newtown shooting, and the Aurora, Colorado theater shooting. After semi automatic handguns, they are the weapon of choice for mass shooters.

Once again, when banned, assault weapon deaths went down. Right now, assault weapon deaths are up. Way up. As they aren't good for hunting (at least as a good sportsmen, what harm is there in banning them?

I think it's important to have background checks on illegal gun pruchases, illegal immigrants, illegan residents of the white house, etc. You used all your time pushing socialized medicine rather than lobbying for the safety of the American public. Oh, I forgot. That's what your socialzed medicine comes in.

    Quick question for everyone:

What needs to be done to get the guns of the hands of criminals??? Case in point, three separate incidents of Cop shooting in NYC today, in one, the 9 mm hand gun was stolen from NC last month.

You are aware, aren't you, that AR-15 rifles are very commonly used for pest control? Ever been to a ranch in Texas to see how they control wild hog populations? Ever been to Colorado or Wyoming or Nebraska to see how they control prairie dogs? Ever watched Nutria control in Louisiana? You simply have no idea what you're talking about.

"IF they are making ILLEGAL purchases contrary to the law, do something with THEM for cryng out loud."

Wouldn't it be nice if there were effective ways to reduce straw man purchasers or if the gun rights advocates would pressure the NRA to make sure there were universal background checks for all gun purchasers or if they wouldn't continuously pressure lawmakers to weaken gun laws and cut off funding for gun control organizations like the ATF?

  • batcave Jan 4, 7:34 p.m.

It did reduce assault weapon use in crime. I can back that up.

The federal assault-weapons ban, scheduled to expire in September,2004 is not responsible for the nation’s steady decline in gun-related violence and its renewal likely will achieve little, according to an independent study commissioned by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).

Since everyone else has their thoughts on what should be done, I will add my 2 cents worth. Prison should not be a comfy place to live. These prisioners have access to 3 hot cooked meals a day, and, to top it off, if they are of a certain religion, they have a special tray just for them. They have access to free health care! Yes, you heard that right! Books, check! TV, check! Blankets if they get chilled, check! A/C, check! Oh, and let's not forget about recreation---- basketball, anyone? It's not a place where someone who is living in filth anyway, dreads going to. I promise you it is better than some homes they might live in. I just think it should be a place where people would NEVER want to go back to. Yes, make it a place so when someone does go, serve their time and go home, they actually TELL others NOT to do anything to wind up there.. See if that would work.

    batcave-"Why didn't the first ban work????crickets."

It did reduce assault weapon use in crime. I can back that up. But as the gun rights folks keep pointing out, most crimes aren't performed by assault rifles , probably because they are more expensive and harder to conceal. But recently, we have seen an increase in assault weapon use in mass shootings with very large numbers of individuals shot in very short times. These weapons serve no good purpose.

I think this is the first time you ever argued with me and provided a legitimate source. I believe your link too but its not what you claimed. The stat is for "blunt objects" which include well, all blunt objects. Not just clubs and hammers. Nevertheless, people killed by rifles aren't as numerous as handguns as your data lists. But this year has been the deadliest on record for mass shootings and the majority of them have been killed with semi automatic rifles. Every single victim in the Sandy Hook shooting was killed by that AR-15 which serves no legitimate purpose outside of being able to kill a lot of people quickly.

How many alcohol related deaths are there a year? Has alcohol been banned yet. How many drug related deaths are there per year. Have drugs been banned. Oh, wait, they have been. But, the left's logic is let's start dispensing drugs and that will stop the need for shootings to steal property to satisfy the drug appetite. Well, with that same logic, why don't you start dispenssing weapons on Friday nights and collect them back on Mondays. Eventually we will run out of bad guy's. You think???

    Plenty Coups

    That's nuts.

Cars are used on public roads primarily.

Guns are used at gun ranges and private property primarily.

When a car is not maintained or inspected it becomes unsafe to operate and it can kill many people. When a gun is not maintained it simply stops working.

Operating cars safely on public roads require knowing a slew of laws and signs and regulations.

Operating a gun safely requires 4 basic rules, all of which sum up to "Assume it's loaded and anything you point it at will be destroyed"

and lastly- Driving a car is a privilege granted by states. Owning a gun is a RIGHT guaranteed by the constitution.

"The National Institute of Justice reported in “Homicide in Eight U.S. Cities” (December, 1997) that only 2 percent of guns used in crimes came directly from gun shows."

Let me put it another way: Almost all guns used in crimes come from unlicensed dealers. From "straw man" purchases where they have someone else buy for them to unregulated purchases from friends or the black market. It only makes sense to register guns and all purchases. The Columbine shooters bought at least some of their guns at a gun show.
