County Property Tax on all you own EVERY year Land,Houses,Cars,Boats,Trailers,Tractors, etc.
Call it what you want but Inheritance Tax is not on my Children it is the last effort to get all they can out of me.
The only people who believe in Inheritance Tax are the ones who didn't work for what they have or don't have anything.

Owing land valued at over 5 million dollars is kinda rich. The state only collected 25 million in inheritance taxes so not many people even pay tax. If owning land worth 5 million is not rich--how much would you have to have to be "rich"?

  • V-Vet 72-75 Dec 28, 7:58 p.m.

Owning land does not mean you are rich.

  • samdutes Dec 28, 7:55 p.m.

Sell the land before you die,,, or give it to them,,, lots of ways around this,,, Jeezz --oleguy

Thats beside the point, you shouldn't have to go around anything to leave land/businesses whatever it is to keep the government from getting it. Heck, it's already been taxed at least 3 or 4 times.....

  • welfarequeen Dec 28, 7:52 p.m.

Rich people shouldn't be able to just leave a pile of cash to their brats and not have it taxed. Then the brats ride around like they don't need to work and act like THEY did something, when the only thing they did was get born. I'm cool with folks making as much money as they want to. Just don't think that you can shift the pile to your family without paying your share to our country that helped make you successful to begin with!

One thing they should do is make a corp. out of the farms. That way they'll get the republicans corp. welfare and keep the farm. If not, they'll play right into the hands of big farm Corp. ran by hedge funds that been wanting to get their hands on these farms for years.

“It has the potential for taking many people who think they're going to farm, who are farming today – younger people – to wipe that generation of farmers off the farm,”

This is called, "democrats leveling the playing field"!!-paultaylorsr100

So they don't have inheritance taxes in 'red states?' Your know the ones where republicans have a majority and write tax code. But but but thats different ;)

  • Nancy Dec 28, 7:28 p.m.

The death tax has a long history, but originally it was levied to fund a war, when the war was over, they dropped the tax. That was when a tax was indeed temporary and not counted as annual revenue to waste.

We've lost our way, we have huge budgets for things the government should NOT be funding and those programs continue to increase while they are like crack addicts looking for more revenue instead of cutting excess programs and costs out of the budget.

    We're upside down.

Double taxation, any way you look at it. Tax us to death

  • WooHoo2You Dec 28, 7:07 p.m.

Inheritance tax... because Democrats believe what you work hard for somehow belongs to the govt when you have the audacity to die. Its just a matter of time and they get "their fair share" of your estate. OVER HALF!- mep

We will call it an inheritance "fee" and the Right will jump all over it!

  • justcommonsense Dec 28, 7:07 p.m.

It's actually very infuriating that they ever came up with an inheritance tax to begin with.

As others have mentioned, the government is taxing property that was bought and paid for and taxed via property taxes many times over. To tax it again because you die and leave it to YOUR FAMILY is outrageous. And at 55%....they know good and well that most of these families won't be able to come up with over 2 million in taxes on 5 million worth of property. Most value of farming is indeed tied up in the equipment etc needed to run the farm.

  • jcthai Dec 28, 6:54 p.m.

Any farmer worried about losing their farm when they die because the tax rates might change should see a financial planner/lawyer now. You have a once per lifetime gift tax exclusion of 5 million right now, as well as the inheritance exclusion. If your son is old enough to trust with it, give hime the farm or $5 million worth of it right now. Then when you die, the remainder of the farm is all that will be subject to inheritance tax, whatever the rate/exclusion might be then.

That was the principal argument in Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto.
Quote."You must therefore, confess that by 'indivedual" you mean no other person than the bourgeois, than the middle class owner of property. This person must be swept out of the way, and made impossible."
If you consider yourself "middle class" understand one thing you have nothing but enemies in Washington!!!!!

Inheritance taxes in general are a very bad idea. I'm sure they were well intended, but money a person earns and on which taxes have been paid should not be taxed repeatedly. And 55% is a lot of money. It's almost enough reason to create a trust (including a foreign trust with foreign trustees) or corporation, foreign or domestic, to own everything. But having to find some way around this -- which the wealthy certainly do -- defeats the purpose.

So, who ends up paying this silly tax? Those people who don't really have that much to pay in the first place. People like these farmers.

Congress abolished the inheritance tax one year. Why not just get rid of it for good?

  • disgusted2010 Dec 28, 6:11 p.m.

Members of Congress don't care. They get all their food from the grocery store.

  • NCHighlander Dec 28, 6:03 p.m.

Folks essentially you won't be able to leave your kids the business you worked for all of your life and paid taxes along the way. When you die the kids would have to come up with enough money to pay a 55 per cent tax on what your parents left you or the government gets it.
