While I'd like to reinstate the Clinton-era ban- OleNCNative

    Why?

It didn't do anything worthwhile other than put some people out of jobs making guns. It sure didn't "stop" crime or mass shootings.

especially since what it banned is used in like 1% of crimes in the first place.

And another note on corporal punishment and crime - Sweden outlawed corporal punishment (spanking) years ago. It is literally against the law to spank your own child. What's the violent crime rate in Sweden? Anyone? Anyone? Beuler? (Also very high rate of atheism as well...)

  • OleNCNative Dec 21, 11:17 a.m.

Gun control - While I'd like to reinstate the Clinton-era ban, I really don't think it's going to fix the problem. There are other countries with more guns per capita and fewer gun deaths. The issue here is cultural... and for the life of me I can't figure out what it is...

  • OleNCNative Dec 21, 11:16 a.m.

"A simple swat on the hiney never hurt anybody! I don't approve of a child being beat or hit but come on people spanking a hiney is not corporal punishment."
    SouthernBornSouthernBred

While I'm pro-spanking, I thought I should mention that spanking is, by definition, corporal punishment. Corpus = body. Punishment by causing pain to the body.

Well you see, its their belief that if you and I did not have firearms the crooks couldn't steal them, so in there eye's it's all our fault and we are to blame, that's why they refer to us gun owners as "Wannabe Murderers"

So even real statistics that clearly demonstrate the effects of rationale gun restrictions aren't enough to convince the gun nuts. Try these REAL stats on for size. The USA has nearly three times as many gun-related deaths as Canada, a very similar population and a high rate of gun ownership. The US falls just short of Mexico in terms of gun-related deaths, which is a country known fo political and police corruption which allows the drug cartels to survive. The US has a death rate from guns at over 11 per 100,000. The UK has a death rate from guns at 0.25 per 100,000. When one examines the injuries by guns in the commission of crimes, the statistics are beyond imaginable. But no amount of real empiral evidence will convince the gun folks that their logic is fundamentally flawed.

"Your child is more likely to be struck by lightning than they are to be killed in a mass shooting at a school.
    junkmail5"

Which is why I get my kid inside when it is lightning out. When it comes to one's child, no threat is too remote. I really didn't understand that until I had my kids... and then everything changed. As a parent, do I worry too much? Maybe. Sometimes it is a leap a faith and I just have to trust that no harm will come to them in whatever it is that they are doing. I worry bout my kids getting struck by lightning, falling over the railing at the zoo, contracting some rare disease and yes sadly now... getting shot at school or in a movie.

30-40 gun deaths per year in England? Who are you kidding. London itself has more than that. Where do you people come from? Bartmeister

Actually Bart, in 2009 there were 42, in 2010 there were 51 and in 2011 there were 60 firearm related deaths in the UK. ALL of the UK. The United Kingdom has one of the lowest rates of gun homicides in the world with 0.07 recorded intentional homicides committed with a firearm per 100,000 inhabitants in 2009 compared to the United States' 3.0 (over 40 times higher)! The USA had the 10th worst gun related murder rate in the world, just behind Mexico at no.9. We have more than double Canada's rate. Get an education, it helps

  • rbenton Dec 21, 9:41 a.m.

There were 3 extra police cars at FVHS this morning.

  • anderson Dec 21, 9:40 a.m.

Lots of things I can think of to blame for the fact that so many are scared (understandably) to send their kids to school. First, my wife and I homeschool but we know there are dangers everywhere...mall, movie theaters, church...a deranged person can go anywhere and start shooting, stabbing, or whatever and kill and injure numerous people.

If this country had more God instead of kicking Him out of schools and other public places, maybe kids could learn more about the Ten Commandments. If parents did their jobs and both parents were in the home, maybe kids would feel more love (and yes, this can happen in single parent homes). Given all the perceived "threats", students should be aware that today is probably one of the safest days in school.

Its the other 184 days when the extra precautions are not being taken that everyone should be concerned about.

  • sheep Dec 21, 9:16 a.m.

Gun control will help some but, people need to be taught to respect other people and not harm others. It's not only the school's responsability to teach people to respect other people and to not harm others. This falls more on the parents. It sounds to me like the parents of these shooters did not teach their kids that.

  • Bartmeister Dec 21, 9:11 a.m.

So I guess the fact that there are only 35-40 gun related deaths per year in England vs. the 11,000 in the US only means that we have more people who want to murder than they do. Could it be that guns are not routinely available in England? Not by your reasoning. Honesty first

    ===================================

And by your reasoning, if we put a gun in everyone's hands in both countries, would the rate increase per capita in both on only one? Your comments only further the fact it's not guns that are the problem but the people who abuse the use of them. 30-40 gun deaths per year in England? Who are you kidding. London itself has more than that. Where do you people come from?

I am amazed that WRAL did not mention the issue of specific schools being looked at for violence and guns during their 6 pm news. All they said was that 4 schools specifically were in question an website had more info than that at 5:30. The level of irresponsoibility on this story by WRAL is amazing. They did spend at least 10 minutes talking about the problems at UNC that happened years ago. Which is more important WRAL? Using a story like that as a teaser for future news shows is wrong.

I saw the schools named on last night on wral. And they were even outside broadcasting in front the schools

  • superman Dec 21, 9:01 a.m.

Do you understand that a security guard can be shot by a person in the parking lot and then the shooter walks in the door. Do you realize a gunman can shoot through the windows? Do you realize how many doors and windows are in a school. No matter where you are--you should always be aware of potential danger. Feeling safe is the first mistake in getting hurt. Do you understand how much damage could be done with a glass bottle of gasoline? When you start feeling safe you going to start feeling sorry. More gun control wont help. There have always been people who are sick and you wont change that. It only takes one person.

If you want to live up to your name you'd mention that there were massively fewer gun deaths in England _before_ they passed their strict gun control laws too.

The US is a violent country compared to most others, that's social, cultural, how we deal with mental health and other social support issues.

(you're also being dishonest in using raw numbers, given the population total is vastly different too)

Funny thing to me is people was saying he never talked enough about gun control. Now, since this tragedy, you people are saying that he is using it for his own good. Make up your mind folks!

I have to say this morning was the first morning all week i have felt ok with taking my 6 year old son to school, i saw i Raleigh police officer on campus! I have been so torn up about this all i have seriously looked into homeschooling my son and then my daughter next year just to know they are home safer with me then out in this world.
They do need Jesus Christ in the schools! But they need to step up the security at the schools also. My sons school is a GREAT school but i can just walk right into his outside classroom door and they don't see who it is at all until the door is opened! It's to late then!

I also didn't see where the video games were violent in nature. Guess your against guns so just went on to attack and making up things as you went along?

  • SouthernBornSouthernBred Dec 20, 7:38 p.m.

A-Wake - She started learning to shoot at 4. But when she started to hunt a few years later was proud of the fact that she could shoot a deer and eat that. What is wrong with somebody hunting for food, it is no different than growing a garden. Oh except hunting is with a gun. Oh well at least I know she won't starve.

    avlu02

What I understand is a crazy guy killed 20 children.

If your god can't manage to stop even that I can find no sane way in which he would've made a bit of difference.

But an armed guard (or even an armed teacher) could have.

With just one single exception, the attack on congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson in 2011, every public shooting since at least 1950 in the U.S. in which more than three people have been killed has taken place where citizens are not allowed to carry guns

You might note mass shootings were happening back then too... before all the secularization you seem to think is to blame for some inexplicable and nonsensical reason.

If someone makes a threat they need to go to prison for many years! This is not funny and all threats should be treated as if they will carry them out and the punishment should be equal to what they would get if they carried them out. Use the RICO and Conspiracy laws to prosecute and incarcerate these aholes.

@SouthernBornSouthernBred- I am just curious...Did your daughter enjoy killing defenseless animals when she was 4? What type of lesson did she learn from that exercise? I am not blaming tv and video games...but you reap what you sow. Violence perpetuates violence. Glad she is thriving in her loving environment. Not all kids have a loving environment to offset the steady diet of violence they consume through, tv, video games and even music lyrics. I did not shelter my kids from reality by not allowing violent games or guns in my family. They are fully aware of reality and see the consequences of violence on the news every day. We respect on honor all life.
