My wife and I were laughing at that! It wasn't intentional, but it was still funny. :)

I thought our defense was pretty good last night. The problem is, we'd play good defense and force a missed shot. But then they'd get the rebound and have another shot at it.

Plus, as soon as we'd start to pull away, they'd hit a big shot to stay within striking distance. Credit to them for that, but I also saw a few "shooters rolls" on some threes and really long twos that rolled around and somehow fell in. Credit to them for that, too, but usually long misses don't clank around and fall in like that.

I guess my point being is stuff like that made this game seem closer than it really was. You could tell who was head and shoulders the better team out there last night. The Pack is improving. Thankfully, our next five games are very winnable games. We have a chance to keep working out the kinks while (hopefully) continuing to win.

The best part is that while we're definitely a solid team, there is room for a LOT of improvement. Our freshmen are learning and improving every night. For once in a very long time, I think "this time" we actually have some good basketball to look forward to.

Haters, go ahead and save this post. I'm sure some of you will. I could be wrong. We could still fall apart. But I like our chances for good things this year. I feel like the only roadblock in the conference is Duke. Man, are they good this year. Wow.

Isn't there still ice at the PNC? I thought they always kept it, and wasn't there some Disney on Ice show there? Anyway, that's an interesting point. No matter the reason, State is playing very well.

  • wlcat609 Dec 19, 2012

Don't know just how valid this might be but having the Canes locked out and possibly the portable floor put down on the concrete instead of the ice, might provide a more stable floor surface to play on. Also without the Canes games being played perhaps the Wolfpack gets more time to practice on the PNC Arena.

  • TruthBKnown Banned Again01 Dec 19, 2012

    How 'bout that Wolfpack!!!

waited until State jacked him up before he even called a TO

    Huh?

They were down by 17 and they got it back under single digits. What exactly did he do wrong? They managed to stay within 7-9 until they finally ran out of time at the 1 minute mark.

You sure? Cause it says State HAD a good offensive game...

Agree Hokie. I want to see the stats.

    Read the stats.

  • lazydawg58 Dec 18, 2012

TBinNC- The reason the story regarding the game mentions defensive deficiencies is because that is the PRE GAME articcle. They just added the score to it when the game was complete. I'm sure they will update soon with a POST GAME story soon enough. I thought defense looked pretty good tonight and I don't recall the pack missing many foul shots either.

  • VT1994Hokie Dec 18, 2012

State went from 44.4% in the 1st to to 70.4% in FT's in the 2nd. Good win for the Pack.

did it dispute the stats I pointed out???

although after getting ahead big, we let up and they ended up shooting over 40%.

again, our D is fine, overall... but, stopping the dribble remains an area of concern... mainly because we don't have any SMALL, QUICK players.

  • Unc r Hypocrits Dec 18, 2012

Hey, Scott, if I'm wrong about our defense, why does the story re the game mention our defensive deficiencies in the first paragraph?

  • redwolfone Dec 18, 2012

They (NCSU)are looking better and better every game. Good game!

  • Unc r Hypocrits Dec 18, 2012

A win is a win, but, we need to learn how to put teams away when we have a 17 point lead with about 9-10 minutes to go.

Or, we better get better at free throw shooting.

Kudos to Stanford for not giving up.

Cheap shot of they night by Hokie! LOL!

  • VT1994Hokie Dec 18, 2012

State has more talent vs Stanford. Dawkins was totally out coached too. He waited until State jacked him up before he even called a TO. He reminded me of Roy. Talent usually wins in games like this one. Good win.

12+ blocks, numerous steals, and holding your opponent to UNDER 40% from the field are ALL quality defensive numbers.

sorry to be the bearer of reality.

the ONLY problem we have on D is NOT stopping the dribble.. and we haven't been good at that since Herb left town in the middle of the night.

Agreed. Those TOs will kill us against the Dukes and Carolinas.

i saw a 17 point lead go straight to 9 a few minutes ago. Lo Brown is in the pastry business with all the TOs, and they just got 2 dunks in a row.

  • WolfPackInDaHouseV.15 Dec 18, 2012

Lo B sometimes get out of control and doesn't look to pass first, but as far as scoring goes... he's darn near UNguardable by another team's PG.

    he's got 22 tonight.

  • Unc r Hypocrits Dec 18, 2012

His maturity and improved game amazes me. Even Calvin seems to have improved a LOT. Now, if Scott Wood can stay consistent with his shooting, we might have a good year. IF Lo Brown can keep his head in the game and stop with the TOs!

  • WolfPackInDaHouseV.15 Dec 18, 2012

yes, those DOZEN BLOCKS they have are awful....

nevermind holding the opponent to < 40% shooting

    what game are you watching??

  • Unc r Hypocrits Dec 18, 2012

Lo Brown has waaaay too many turnovers to be a PG in this league, IMHWPO. If he'd just quit trying to be too da33 fancy! Making me pull my hair! lol

    Our defense sukcs, too!

  • WolfPackInDaHouseV.15 Dec 18, 2012

    Howell is a B-E-A-S-T!!

    just posted yet ANOTHER Double/Double!!

  • 903 mens national championships Dec 18, 2012

It's been an enjoyable game to watch. Dawkins has this team playing as well as can be expected against the preseason #6 in the country. Still hanging around down 9 with 7 minutes to go.

That is about Stanford's average on the Season (.398).

  • VT1994Hokie Dec 18, 2012

Stanford is rushing shots, and turning it over. Dawkins doesn't look like he has this team thinking right now. He should have called a time out 5 minutes ago. State has talent vs these guys. State is shooting 59.6 vs 38.9%.

  • StunGunn Dec 18, 2012

State is blowing the game wide open. Stanford won't be able to dig themselves out of the hole.

  • StunGunn Dec 18, 2012

Wood is having a very good game.

  • Deacons Dec 18, 2012

Finally, Wood is working to get open.

  • StunGunn Dec 18, 2012

Did anyone see Powell on the floor after getting kicked in the - um - basketballs? That had to hurt.

  • Unc r Hypocrits Dec 18, 2012

Other than too much hot-dogging, I like how we are playing as a team.

    GO PACK!!!

  • VT1994Hokie Dec 18, 2012

Kudos for Wood. 5 3's in the 1st half is out there. State is shooting 54.8% vs 44.4%. They look together in this first half. Stanford looks like on paper they should be further behind right now. Good game. FT's could win this one.

yeah, they should pick on some "name" program like, ECU for instance.

  • WolfPackInDaHouseV.15 Dec 18, 2012

    GO PACK!!!

  • VT1994Hokie Dec 18, 2012

This is a Scott Wood highlight reel right now. This game is far from being over in the 1st half people. No one knows who will win at this point.

    Stanford Season Stats:
POINTS PER GAME 69.9 (142nd OVERALL)
REBOUNDS PER GAME 38.4 (74th OVERALL)
ASSISTS PER GAME 11.0 (282nd OVERALL)
FIELD GOAL PCT .398 (292nd OVERALL)

  • ugottabkiddinme Dec 18, 2012

  • kornfan2448 Dec 18, 2012

    Stanford wins 75-70

  • StunGunn Dec 18, 2012

State will win this game. Last year's game was on the road, State was younger, and most important, #5 was suffering from leg cramps and had to sit out for a big chunk of time. All that has changed. I just don't see State losing.
