Publish their pictures in the local newspapers and show them on the internet on a state website titled "North Carolina citizens that are stealing from you by corrupting our government efforts to help each other". Then send them to prison for 5 years or more and get the money back from them somehow.

Agree with ProzacDispenser--small potatoes. Medicaide does not send statements to clients. I'm sure if clients knew what was being paid in their behalf many more "errors" and "fraud" could be found.

I know a woman who claims her husband has abandoned her so she can get Medicaid..but he is there.. every night. Oh, I called people. They have done nothing. It is the whole system that stinks.

I've heard this pretty common and that Social Service really don't have anyway to disprove it. They're not allowed to question the nationality of a person. They also not allowed to question if someone is here legally or not.

  • dontgetmestarted Dec 19, 9:25 a.m.

Rachel....I like you. :)) Couldn't have said it better. BUT, you know as well as I do we are considered uncaring, selfish and VERY politicaly incorrect to recongnize and actually speak the truth. Sad thing is people don't view children as the very thing they are...a blessing and a privelage to have NOT a human rights issue. When you have children you have been blessed and are personally put in charge of that child's wellfare and wellbeing by the One who created them. If you didn't plan to have that child either own up to the responsibility of your actions or make arrangements for that child with someone who will and make sure you don't make the same "mistake" twice. NO excuses for having multiple children if you can't afford them. Period. Unfortunate things happen but public ASSISTANCE should be just that, assistance while YOU make arrangements to put yourself in a better place unless you are truely and completely unable to do so which should be the exception not the rule.

  • COLT45 Dec 19, 8:08 a.m.

Bust them all and give them the maximum penalty. Make examples of them, bring in the media cameras. Maybe other criminials like this will get the message.

just like the IRS, try to report a tax cheat & they don't care unless it involves a $million+.

  • autismawareness Dec 19, 8:04 a.m.

While it is good they have discovered this fraud, it probably cost more money to discover it and the court costs will be far more than what they uncovered.
    whatelseisnew

so are we to let all petty criminals go?
also i doubt the program has cost more than 500 million.

  • miseem Dec 18, 7:41 p.m.

Rebel - based on this excellent reporting, it looks like the charge is based on failure to report a felony drug conviction " Authorities said she received more than $100,000 for her services to Medicaid recipients". Pretty much says she did provide services. May be more to it than that, but some sites can't be bothered with reporting the details. True, she should not have gotten the contract to provide services due to the conviction, but if the services she provided were adequate, it did not rip off the taxpayers to the tune of $100,000. The patients got the care they needed. However, I'm sort of thinking there is more to this story also. Too bad this source is not providing those details.

  • westernwake1 Dec 18, 6:57 p.m.

Just as a side note.... isn't Robin Pendergraft (former SBI director) the one leading the office that is doing all the Medicaid/Medicare fraud investigations in North Carolina now. Looks like she is making some progress based on all the money recovered and charges.

  • See Chart Dec 18, 6:55 p.m.

These programs are horrible until you need them yourself or for
an aging relative,I hope if this comes to trial they also get jailtime if guilty, stealing is stealing.

  • lessismore Dec 18, 6:54 p.m.

And what will be their punishment? Nothing......just pay back 10% of what they stole and business as usual.....

  • cmt2hm2 Dec 18, 6:51 p.m.

It's about time someone started the process. This rip off has been a problem for WAY to many years!! They ALL deserve what they get. To many people have to suffer because of all the greed and selfishness, they think they'll never get caught..........well Surprise!!

It is about time that the failed former SBI Director and her minions actually did something.

  • whatelseisnew Dec 18, 6:06 p.m.

"Cooper said. “Cheating Medicaid is illegal, and our investigators and attorneys are finding violators and making them pay.”"

too bad it is not illegal for the government to rob our income for this horrible program.

December 18, 2012 4:43 p.m.........Wrong about hidden felony, that would be just fraud, she did a lot more than that to get other charges. Bottom line, she was a crook that got caught. What they're doing is what people have screamed about for a long time. Stopping the fraud and abuse that has raped the system.

  • Uhavenoclu Dec 18, 4:53 p.m.

  • rachel Dec 18, 4:24 p.m.

its nice they catch provider fraud-when will they start catching recipient fraud? Illegals should get nothing from the public dole and those that are having multiple children from multiple dads should be subject to the means test-ie-you can keep them and have them if you can afford to raise them, if not, we will find good homes for them but we will not pay a fool to do the raising-thats just common sense- multiple generations on the dole are there because we allow, as a society, multiple generations to be brought up in this culture. Parenting and raising a family is a gift and obligation on the part of the parents to do the right thing, not the obligation of society to make sure someone else has the means on our dollars.

  • 1983rs Dec 18, 4:10 p.m.

this type of fraud should be punished by paying full restatution, a fine equall to the fraud and the cost of investagation+legal expenses the tax payers have inccured

  • tiffanyruth Dec 18, 4:09 p.m.

Glad they were caught, but I wonder why on the two who presented or "concealed" information was not caught? Do they not do thorough background checks on these people?
