There's HUMANE ways to process livestock ...and INHUMANE ways. Sadly, a lot of factory farms go the way of INHUMANE.

  • pcrowe01 Dec 11, 2012

Getting swept under the rug? Imagine that!

  • gnewsome1 Dec 11, 2012

Oh wellm wnough talk about turkeys to turkeys. We planning on having one for CHRISTmas. Have already had it for Thanksgiving and it was good. I guess we could be classed as killers since it was dead when we ate it.

  • gnewsome1 Dec 11, 2012

Good commdent ripe. If the whiners on here had ever worked on a farm, they would have a much different opinion. We actually raised what we ate, including vegetables. Now, a small percentage of farmers feed the rest of the nation. Wonder how many of the crybabys on here eat turkey, chicken or other farm animals.

  • ripetomatoes Dec 11, 2012

I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain for nothing.
I've never seen a starving whiner, either. All you're going to do is raise the price of food if you boycott or shut someone down.
I was fortunate to be raised on a farm. Helped my Dad bottle feed a calf he bought at the livestock auction in the spring one year when I was about 5 years old. Named him Bill. That fall Bill disappeared and I found out we had been eating him about twice a week. Bill tasted good.
Let the farmers handle the raising of the livestock and let everyone else worry about the price of food.
If you eat anything today, show a little appreciation and whisper a prayer of thanks for a farmer.

  • gnewsome1 Dec 11, 2012

Did the same thing as shadowbubbaz, except we killed and plucked the chickens outside of the house. We didn't have a sink but the chicken still tasted the same, awesome.

  • gnewsome1 Dec 11, 2012

Eat more turkey. That's what they are being raised for. Prosecute the tree huggers for trespass. Butterball does not raise these birds, they buy them for human consumption and you tree huggers eat them. The contractors are private contractors, not Butterball employeses. Butterball just buys them so that you people can have something good to eat. I like turkey. Keep on buying them Butterball.

  • PITNSMOKE Dec 11, 2012

To all don't group people. I work in a company that raises animals for profit. These animals feed the WORLD. I try to be as humane as possible. I wish that was true about everyone. I was raised on a farm. If it wasn't for these companies, you wouldn't be able to get off work and go by KFC, Mcdonalds, Bojangles ,Outback and buy supper. What percent of you even know where to buy livestock for food. Then again don't forget they don't want you harvesting (shooting) deer, rabbits, and squirrels. Oh don't forget the vegetables you say you will eat, some people break the rules in that too. Do you honestly think when you go out to eat people are CLEAN? There again some are, others don't care. The company I work for has a ZERO Tolerence on abuse. But some of you think spanking a child is abuse, but you will watch Jerry Springer and laugh, Dr. Phil and cry. Bottom line is treat EVERYTHING WITH RESPECT!

  • beachboater Dec 11, 2012

I don't agree with any type of abuse period. People, animals, whatever. However, I also do not like these tree huggers that try to file suit on any and everything to get their names in the news. This group is akin to PETA.

What gives them the authority to conduct an "undercover investigation" to start with? I really wonder how much video they had to get before they got their "really good stuff."

  • shadowbubbaz Dec 10, 2012

I was raised on a farm....did you not seee that part! I know how a chicken goes from being alive to sitting on your dinner table. I used to help cut the chickens heads off and then pluck them in my granny's kitchen sink so you cant tell me nothing that I dont already know when It comes to this!!!!! There is a way to do things and a way you dont do things!!!! Common sense---where did it go?????

  • retiredindependentpopo Dec 10, 2012

Wait a minute! Does this mean the "turkey" didn't go to jail???

  • shadowbubbaz Dec 10, 2012

rats - meaning someone who dosen't deserve to be called a human being!!!! I just gotta keeep telling myself "I know folks were raised better then this" stay positive, Stay positive!!! Karma is REAL and I have sen it frist hand!!! So it will come back on around to bite you!!!!! Better hope you treating people, animals, live stock and anything else with the respect they deserve!!!!!

  • trekkie13 Dec 10, 2012

Scubagirl stated: "And your POINT would be????

Nursing is a hard job, but I never abused my patients."

You are comparing human beings to livestock. God gave us dominion over the animals. I don't advocate hurting livestock at all but I am wondering how many people here realize how hard poultry catching is? It is not a glamour job but one of hard work. Real life as someone has alluded to earlier does not entail the poultry just magically instantly leaving the farm and instantly converting into a tasty looking product to go home and cook from the local meat aisle at the grocery store.
    It is a gruesome process.

  • shadowbubbaz Dec 10, 2012

Amen to Cocker_mom!!!!! keep on preaching and I will turn the page :)

  • shadowbubbaz Dec 10, 2012

cocker_mom, I just love and respect your comments. They are so REAL and so RIGHT!!! I wish the world was filled with more folks like you and I. I was raised on a farm, where there were cows that grazed on fields and my grandpa sold the milk. We had chicken that laid the eggs we ate and chickens that we ate but my papa NEVER abused or pumped these farm animals with anything and the taste is better. I could go on and on... These lives that these "farm animals" live now are because of money hungrey humans wanting to make that high all mighty dollar!!! JUST SAD!!! GREEDY GREEDY GREEDY, selfish rats because they cant be human, we who are human beings that know right from wrong and know about the past and have grown up on the past where things were more pure will probably will never be able to teach these "rats" how to live with class and pride and be humble and yes I took it there!!!

  • Dynol Yn Cael Ei Dec 10, 2012

cocker_mom - "You CAN raise animals for food with respect."

However, it is difficult to do in factory farming where profit is the motivator and there is little oversight in the factory.

Heck, many meat processors would still be selling us rotten meat if it weren't for laws against that because profit is more important to many of them than their own integrity or the health of their customers are.

  • Dynol Yn Cael Ei Dec 10, 2012

So a video showing someone kicking an animal isn't sufficient to get a guilty verdict? What's it going to take then?

As for Butterball, this isn't the first time for them. And I for one will never buy another one of their products until they start putting surveillance cameras in all of their processing plants to ensure they can catch and terminate any beasts who do this to animals and deliver me an abuse-free product.

  • shareisa Dec 10, 2012

While visiting Africa last year, I saw incredible animal suffering on the streets of Morocco. Here in America, I thought we not only had the funds, but the desire to show compassion to animals. After this story and the Montgomery County Animal "Shelter" story, I am appalled at the lack of remorse for incredible lack of caring of our governmental officials and the public. I don't expect much from the people greedy enough to kill animals for profit. I DO expect more from our citizens of this blessed country. Whole Foods, here I least I can buy from suppliers who do care. At the most, I can become a vegan or vegetarian. Anyone with eyes who saw the video should be able to see that this is ABUSIVE.

  • Scubagirl Dec 10, 2012

"You mean when we had slavery, right? bobbobson23"

Ummmm no, not even THAT long ago. But guess you're from the city

  • whatdidusay Dec 10, 2012

Wanna stop the abuse? Put the turkeys in a cage & lower to the ground on New Years.

  • cocker_mom Dec 10, 2012

bobbobson23 - seriously? it was not all that long ago when we were not factoring farming. I grew up near a dairy farm where my friend's father had about 100 head of cows that came in and out of the barn every day, grazed on fields, and he sold milk and made a living. And I am not 160 years old.

Factory farming has "increased efficiency" to the point of total disregard to the animals and they are living lives of consummate torture pumped full of antibiotics and growth hormones, fed feed of ground up other animals (when they are not carnivores or omnivores) and the animals are suffering, and so car we with food that no longer tastes like nature intended but some sort of bland "tastes like chicken".

You CAN raise animals for food with respect. Your ignorance notwithstanding.

@So what is turkey abuse, fried in oil instead of baked in marinade sauce?

    December 10, 2012 6:38 p.m.

  • justaconservativeguy Dec 10, 2012

@justaconservativeguy, @heels21 and @Tarheel_For_Life have (unfortunately) proved that my statement is correct:

“All of the abuse and killing of 9 Billion animals in the U.S. every because of ignorance and people putting their tongue (how things taste) above all that really matters.”

ouch, you got me good. Turkey is still good... and chicken, pork, beef, deer and on and on.....

  • smegma Dec 10, 2012

slowly but surely the public is waking up to how much better food tastes when it's raised/grown and harvested humanely

  • shadowbubbaz Dec 10, 2012

reguardless of treatment...thats the PROBLEM right there!!!!! Folks like you!!!! If your going to kill the animals, then kill them. ONLY a SICK, TWISTED, CRAZY, MEAN person could abuse these animals or live stock! The folks that see no problem with it are just as SICK, TWISTED, CRAZY, & MEAN as the ones doing it!!! They do end up dead but they should not be treated they way they have been treated like in this story before they die!!! We as humans are born to die so do you support child abuse or spouse abuse? SAME THING IN MY EYES!!!

  • shadowbubbaz Dec 10, 2012

ONE MORE THING.... for the prosecutor not to file any charges it may be an inside cover up!!!!! The prosecutor may have some kind of connections with these butterball plants??? something to think about

  • whatelseisnew Dec 10, 2012

I tried Butterball once a long time ago. Did not like it and never bought it again. This is nonsense anyway. These are animals raised as food items and regardless of treatment they all end up dead. Odd that people complain about this. The animal shelters are routinely killing animals for no purpose other than to make room for more animals to be killed.

  • shadowbubbaz Dec 10, 2012

YES, let the prosecutor eat the butterball turkeys!!! Cause It sure will NOT be me. and Im going to tell eveyone I know that does not stay caught up with the news what is going on and not to buy and Butteball meat what so ever!!! My friends and family members will support me all the way too and that is what Im going to LOVE about this!!!!!!! there will be a lot of folks not buying anything that comes from Butterball!!!!! NO WAY

  • shadowbubbaz Dec 10, 2012

Why hit, kick, throw and drag by their wings???? That is so sad and what is even more sad is that nothing is going to be done about it so it sets up childern that see things like this will act the same way!!! Just kill the animal, dont abuse it!!!! That is just plain out right STUPID!!!!! Everyone in the video needs to have thier head checked!!! They for sure need to be fired!!!!!!! NO MORE BUTTERBALL TURKEY FOR ME AND MINE

  • bobbobson23 Dec 10, 2012

"Farmers USED TO treat their livestock with respect because their animals provided them with food, and income and sometimes labor. • miketroll3572 Dec 10, 2012

Let the prosecutor eat all the Butterball turkeys going forward. Our family will never again purchase a Butterball product.

Thats ok, I will buy a extra one this year to take up your slack.

  • miketroll3572 Dec 10, 2012

    Serve up the Turkey!

  • shadowbubbaz Dec 10, 2012

This just simply says its ok to do whatever you want! SAD,SAD,SAD!!!! The Turkeys should be treated with respect! Just like farmers from back in the day, they treated their live stok with respect!!!! I dont want to eat something that has been treated like these Turkeys have been treated!!! There is no sense in treating them in a way like that. Who in their RIGHT MIND would think thats ok??? There needs to be charges brought against these workers!!!!!!!! I will NO longer buy from butterball, they will NOT get any of my money or my families money. I agree a lot with what "cocker_mom has to say!!!!!

  • cocker_mom Dec 10, 2012

yes, we raise animals for slaughter. I am not a vegetarian, but I do insist that the animals that I eat have been raised with a reasonable amount of care and not abused so that they do not suffer. There is a way to humanely raise animals for food, and this wasn't it. Just because they are raised to be food does not give the workers a right to make their time here as horrific as possible. that's abuse - whether we're ultimately going to kill them for food or not.

Farmers USED TO treat their livestock with respect because their animals provided them with food, and income and sometimes labor. Now, these factory farms just hire anyone off the street and they could care less about the animals. it's a long way from the bucolic picture of the old time farmer - and we are ALL suffering for it.

  • lrakydarb2 Dec 10, 2012

Human beings are omnivores. Look at our teeth. Look at cows teeth. Look at lions teeth. God made us to eat meat. We may not "need" it, but there is nothing wrong in eating in.

  • Thought Criminal WS Dec 10, 2012

If PETA had thier way eating any meat would be a crime. Steaming lobsters, clams, or oysters would be animal abuse. In the end, they fail to recognize humans are animals and part of the food chain.

They also fail to realize we all don't have the same values. I recognize the turkey's as peices of cardboard, to be broken down, cut, and made into product. I don't cater to think of the products emotions as they are simply food. Savage and cruel as it is, we are animals just like the lion on the plains. I also have enough maturity to accept the meat I eat may have suffered before dying, and may have died simply to provide my meal.

If YOU don't like it, don't eat meat. I'll have the maple bourbon turkey tips...

  • umop apisdn Dec 10, 2012

I dont think its the same. I have a dog i love more than most people i know and i think its stupid to spend time on this when there is a extensively long list of issues that are WAY WAY more important than a animal that we lock up and raise to kill being mistreated...just saying

  • Uhavenoclu Dec 10, 2012

The sad truth is that the human body does not require animal flesh or by-products to survive. All of the abuse and killing of 9 Billion animals in the U.S. every because of ignorance and people putting their tongue (how things taste) above all that really matters.

But it sure tastes good, whether FRIED IN Grease, that was the good part where all the flavor was.You used to get meat like lamb and pork chops with a few inches of fat on the edge and fried chicken had natural skin and not immitation.
Used to love going into the supermarket with my lighted cigarette and order my meat and then if I got sick and went ino the hospital asking the nurse to bring a ashtray to my room so I could have one of my cigarettes and sitting at the back of the plane smoking away...........AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW FREEDOM WAS GOOD BEFORE THEY TORE DOWN THE WALL AND LET THE COMMUNISTS OVER AND WE BECAME THE BIGGEST COMMUNIST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.............OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE

  • jaydosse Dec 10, 2012

Let the prosecutor eat all the Butterball turkeys going forward. Our family will never again purchase a Butterball product.

The prosecutor needs new glasses and that's no bull-pen!!

Maybe we can get Renee Elmers to sponsor a bill naming the farms involved after Jesse Helms.

This state needs more stringent laws regarding animal rights.
It also needs more careful scrutiny of who is serving the public interest.
Hope ya'll enjoyed your Butterballs this season....

"Their job is to kill them so we can eat them?" May be, but is that the reason they're being abused...because they're going to be killed anyway? I think so. I saw the video and I was horrified. Good luck, Mr. Lee. Your thought process is different from mine. I'd hate to be one of your pets.

  • gopowell Dec 10, 2012

Animal abuse? Their job is to kill them so we can eat them?

  • warrenhicks19672 Dec 10, 2012

This is simply sad...the DA saw the same videos we did and it is definately abuse. These are living animals and they feel pain just like we do. This DA is heartless and a coward. I will be happy to Boycott Butterball turkey...Another NC coverup. I think the DA Ernie Lee should be charged with neglacting his duties.

  • angela32nc2 Dec 10, 2012

  • za2duke Dec 10, 2012

  • warrenhicks19672 Dec 10, 2012

well, yall can say what u want to but the videos I saw were definately animal abuse, and severe at that. They are living animals and do experience pain...It is just wrong that these people will continue to do what they are doing with the blessings of a heartless and cowardly DA. SAD.
