"I agree that this horse story is indeed tragic but what can we do besides lament?"

Well my first wife was Russian and we often enjoyed horse meat and kasha. The dish is a great delicacy in Russia. Unfortunately here in the United States, horse meat is extremely expensive. Is that any sort of a hint?

  • nano Dec 5, 3:35 p.m.

Poor horses. Especially Maggie. Anyone who'd do that to a horse is beyond ill. (I'm wondering if Maggie should be on IV antibiotics? Surely some vets @ NCSU can advise/help?)

  • goalflinger Dec 5, 1:34 p.m.

I agree that this horse story is indeed tragic but what can we do besides lament? We express our sentiments but what does it really accomplish other than making us feel better that we commented? What if the people who did this are caught? I know of cases where overwhelming evidence exists to convict people who have been caught harming others and/or their property. Then, because of case loads in the court system or some other not so good reason, A DA or prosecutor somewhere will rule the evidence not good enough and throw the whole thing out thereby letting career criminals go free yet again. All the old adages come to mind; "If you want more of what you got, keep doing what you're doing." Or, "When the punishment starts fitting the crime, crime will decrease."
Someone commented para; What would we want next? A death penalty for spitting on the sidewalk?
My answer: A conditional "yes." The condition being that if it were to become law and you are forewarned in no uncertain terms that

  • quikdraw2 Dec 5, 10:51 a.m.

I have only one strong thought for the those people who would do such a thing....and I can't say it here because it is VERY offensive.

  • GALNC Dec 5, 10:31 a.m.

I remember we had bought a horse and had it out in the field in the winter. She became very sick and we could not figure it out. We called the Vet and found out she had been shot after the autopsy. With her winter coat and the size of the bullet...the vet didn't see the bullet hole. It was sad to see a animal struggle/die for no apparent reason. We canvassed the woods/neighbors and found a few bullet holes in houses from people using guns, but never caught the people who did it. I see this and am furious that someone would do this.

  • Dido Dec 4, 5:14 p.m.

Yea then some vigilante can pull time for getting involved in a law enforcement issue. Posting names can cause actions by people with mental disorder as bad or worse than the stabber. Catch them, prosecute them, and if their crazy institutionalize them. Stay out of it hangmen.
    NCHighlander"

I never cease to be amazed at the gangster mentality of people that profess to be of a religious persuasion. Every time I read comments like the one above I can not help but get the mental image of an old black and white Frankenstein movie where the peasants, carrying torches, pitchforks and cudgels are storming the castle and beating on the door.

  • exador7 Dec 4, 4:56 p.m.

@ evenflow2005 ,, Exactly !!! Why I'm amazed that someone else has had this idea. How can we propagate this. Screening in the school system is a must for the future of our country. Our citizens are just not getting what they need in order to become anything but morbid freaks of several different varieties .
Just look at the news LEADERS. If you don't see the need you are ignorant and do not need to be in a position of LEADERSHIP.

  • k9sandQtrs Dec 4, 4:42 p.m.

I can't believe that the person(s) who did this got away without being injured themselves. I couldn't imagine walking up to a strange horse and the horse allowing me to repeatedly injure it in its hindquarters without getting kicked or the horse running off. Something's not quite right here....

The only really good thing here is that this is very, very rare meaning there aren't many people that sick running around stabbing horses.

  • baldchip Dec 4, 2:08 p.m.

What peron in their right mind could do this to innocent horses?? Find em, lock em up,and throw away the key!

If they will do this aweful stuff to horses, they'll do this to innocent women and children as well!!

  • Whosays Dec 4, 1:58 p.m.

I don't mean to wish harm on anyone, but what they did was selfish and cruel, and they did not think about it much otherwise there would have not been that many horses stabbed, something is wrong with this person.

  • evenflow2005 Dec 4, 1:54 p.m.

Mental illness and retardation is a growing problem in this country. We have to find a way of an awareness program to recognize these disturbed individuals before these situations occur. Whoever did these acts is a dangerous person(s). Humans are probably next on there agenda.

  • If the shoe fits.... Dec 4, 11:42 a.m.

This sounds like someone on drugs. No matter, when he/they are caught, the parents of the culprits will plead for mercy claiming mental illness. I say no mercy for animal abusers. Anyone who would do this to an animal will do worse to a human - given time.

  • Thought Criminal WS Dec 4, 11:27 a.m.

People who do this sort of crud "progress" to human beings. This is the sign of a serial / pscho killer in the making. If someone had hurt my pets, law or no law, I'd be in jail for what I'd do to the individual responsible (if I got caught...and thats a HUGE if).

  • Lady Marksman Dec 4, 11:16 a.m.

    piene2

    Our jails are already overcrowded.

When will we, as a nation, decide that the punishments for criminal behaviour need to be a deterrent?

Crime rates are continuing to go up, more prisoners that our tax dollars have to support and, most importantly, innocent victims that suffer (and let's not forget the friends and family members of the victims that suffer as well).

  • memangum Dec 4, 11:16 a.m.

This has happened before...at the corner of Blue Ridge and Hillsborough at the vet school. Some ponies/horses were shot if I remember correctly. I do not know if the culprit(s) were ever caught.

  • workinghuman33 Dec 4, 11:11 a.m.

Such a senseless crime. I pray for all the horses recovery and that they catch the worthless form of life that committed such an atrocity.

  • xxxxxxxxxxxxx Dec 4, 11:10 a.m.

"If someone hurt one of my pets like this I would want death..."

I agree. My pets are innocent and trusting and don't do a thing to hurt anyone. If anyone tried to hurt them for whatever sick pleasure they got out of it, I think I'd want to kill them myself. To heck with the justice system.

  • working for deadbeats Dec 4, 10:59 a.m.

This persons next victim might just be you, but let's not punish animal abusers too harshly.

  • SportsLover75 Dec 4, 10:56 a.m.

If someone hurt one of my pets like this I would want death...just because animals can not speak it does not mean they don't feel pain. Taking time out of your life to do something so disturbing to a living creature you should be charged to the fullest. I know there are some people out there that are not animal people. My dogs are my kids and very big part of my family. For some people thier pets may be all they have. To me this is attempted murder. When or if they are found they should be charged with just that.

  • Unslaved Dec 4, 10:37 a.m.

I hope Andrea Hayward sees this, and I hope her veterinarian tries what I suggest. At this point, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain:

Maggie should be treated with a wonderful and amazing thing called Vitamin C. Intravenously, orally, or intramuscular injections, whichever method your veterinarian feels is best.

I have used vitamin C on my horses with outstanding results and my veterinarian is aware of its tremendous results in managing horse health. My horses are fed vitamin C on a daily basis.

Powdered vitamin C can be obtained at any reputable health food retailer. Vedco should have vitamin C in 100 mil. bottles for intramuscular or intravenous applications. Please ask your vet to consider treating Maggie with vitamin C along with daily injection of B12.

    All the best, Unslaved

"I suppose next posters here will want the death penalty for spitting on the sidewalk. piene2

REALLY piene2?? You are going to try to compare STABBING horses with spitting on the sidewalk? What do you think would be a suitable punishment for a vicious crime such as this??
    Lady Marksman"

Some jail time would be appropriate, not state sanctioned murder.

  • clrh Dec 4, 9:37 a.m.

One poster in particular often seems to appear mainly to point out when he/she feels that public outrage over criminal actions seems exaggerated. I appreciate his concern about excessive reactions, but find it disappointing that he does not express disapproval of the crimes themselves or concern for victims. If he did seem to care that crimes should not be committed, or seem to be outraged on behalf of victims, perhaps his viewpoint on the appropriateness of punishments would be much more compelling!

  • CestLaVie Dec 4, 9:15 a.m.

"How would they like it if someone did this to their family pet? They will have to answer for all they do in life...To be sure their parents raised them better than this..."

The guilty party(ies) have probably already been practicing on family pets.

Perhaps the parents have been wondering for years just what to do with a kid that likes to kill/maim animals. Or turning their heads the other way? Or worse yet, condoning it?

Some parents don't know HOW to raise anything, let alone kids.

This story is pitiful. Only someone very sick would do something like this, even for fun or boredom.

"We have to make sure people as sick as this don't reproduce!"

And HOW are "we" going to stop it? Everyone has "rights" today; common sense, respect, kindness be damned.
