Good 1st presser. Saying the right things, good energy, loves NC and this area as well as Lake Lure and Asheville. I'm sensing he is going to offer to coach the NCSU Bass Fishing Team for free as he mentioned fly fishing numerous times.

  • Got Peart Dec 3, 2012

I haven't read all the posts on here, so this may have been covered:

    1) Regarding the use of "droven" - give the guy a break - he basically hadn't slept in 48 hours. Last time I did that, I could barely put a sentence together.

    2) It happens all over football, and basketball. moreso with football though. It is critical that if a guy leaves a mid-major for a bigger job (who doesn't look to get a promotion elsewhere), typically you leave immediately. School you are leaving needs to find a new coach, and you need to hit the ground running as there is a recruting dead period from 12/16 - early January. He needs to reaffirm the current class, build a staff, and move his family. Lots going on.

    3) If you read comments from NIU players/staff - they ALL support him. They didn't tell him to not let the door hit him on the way out. I think schools like that realize they are a stepping stone for a coaches career. Heck - you can say State is the same thing.

I for one am EXTREMELY excited to have Coach D here. He was my #1 since I read about him online

  • kkevin7048 Dec 3, 2012

I am praying that I am still alive to see the new head coach as I have stage 4 terminal cancer.Go Pack !

Those who haven't heard of Doeren before now just don't pay attention to football outside of NC or the ACC. He's a solid hire. What I don't get is that Yow said he was her 1st choice since he has the same agent as Gotfried. That being the case, why did she hire a search firm to the tune of 90 grand?

  • VT1994Hokie Dec 3, 2012

You never know until a coach gets a chance in State's coach and VT's new coach. We can't afford to lose anyone with only 8 on a scholarship. Beating OK. State was pretty special.

  • KevInApex Dec 3, 2012

A good choice and very similar to Fedora at UNC. Up and coming coaches who have had success in lower level conferences.

This is probably what both schools should gave done when they fired Amato and Bunting. Instead UNC went for the big name and that got them lots of talent and a big mess. NCSU went for a solid and clean coach and they got chronically mediocre teams.

The challenge in the future for both will be keeping these guys if they have success, but for now I would say the playing field is even.

  • DeathRow-IFeelYourPain-NOT Dec 3, 2012

Looking forward to see what Roger Dorn can do at State, now that he's at a Major League program.

  • BigfootBeliever Dec 3, 2012

Betcha NCSU still can doesn't reach the top 25 with Doeren. Oh and by the way, the ACC getting ready to become quite a bit weaker in football, which will not help any ACC football programs. GT is now leaving and there significant rumors of other teams exiting. BC to the Big Ten and possibly VT, FSU and/or Miami to the SEC.

  • allcharly Dec 3, 2012

obrien didn't get the job done. his record was average at best. doeren has won at every level and we will see what happens at state. i said it five years ago when butchy, toby and cuttcliff were all hired that the duke coach was probably the best of the three, and he has proved me right. butchy gone, toby gone, cuttcliff bowling at duke. as a state fan i hope doeren can bring back the wolfpack to contend for the acc and maybe higher once in a while. would not be suprised if four years from now fedora gone" with next scandal" doeren gone "9 wins not good enough" cuttcliff still at duke " a bowl game every couple of years".

Yep. The fans will tout how good of a fan base they are, how their tailgating is the best in the world, how they always stay until the last snap of any game no matter what (well, except for the UVa and TN games) well most games, how they will win the ACC this year, they will blog their daily "UNC Cheat" rants, they will still be behind Carolina in all things, ya de ya de ya da... But, there is always hope. lol

  • swray001 Dec 3, 2012

Unc will never dominate the Coasstal Division. Talk about a coach winning with another coaches players. Fedora is a flash in the pan.

  • aspenstreet1717 Dec 3, 2012

That is just a technicality because he accepted the State job at the END of the season. He coached them to a 12-1 record which EARNED them the Orange Bowl. You are being ridiculous.

His team is ranked 16 and playing FSU in the Orange bowl.

  • Deacons Dec 3, 2012

Many good coaches come from that conference and yes, that conference is probably better than the ACC. The ACC has become one of the worst football conferences in the country so do not judge a coach because he comes from a conference that does not get much attention. Remember, every year in the NCAA tournament, teams from those conferences beat the "big name schools."

  • jcd241959 Dec 3, 2012

He comes from a tougher conference than the acc. I am sorry if this has been said!

  • dapack1974 Dec 3, 2012

    "Never heard of him"

I never heard of Lou Holtz or Dick Sheridan either before they came to state. He could turn out to be as a good hire as they were or he could be a Matt Doherty type hire. All I know is he appears to have all of attributes necessary to a very successful coach at state.

  • conrad27713 Dec 3, 2012

    View quoted thread

Pls get your facts right, because Holtz left State for Arkansas in 1976 after winning the conference title.

  • corey3rd Dec 3, 2012

when is the last time an NC State coach left for a bigger and more prestigious head coaching gig? Bo Rein left the wolfpack to coach LSU in 1979, but died before he had a chance. Lou Holtz left state in '75 for the Jets.

So pretty much for 32 years, NC State has been a place where head coaches go to dead end. Even Monte Kiffin, the defensive genus had his will to be a head coach broken at Carter-Finley.

  • vile garbage Dec 3, 2012

    Never heard of him.

I know, Hokie! VT and Duke are the only two undefeated b-ball teams in the ACC now. And VT beat a ranked team yesterday, so it's not like they're only beating cupcakes. Very happy for you. Seth Greenberg is doing a good job on ESPN, but it must be bittersweet for him to see how well VT is doing.

As for Yow's decision in choosing Doeren, she must have seen his potential. Like others have posted, some big name coaches started out at smaller schools and worked their way up. He seems like a good choice to lead State to a successful football program.

  • StunGunn Dec 3, 2012

I was surprised that Holtz struggled at South Florida; I suppose it's tough to recruit against schools like Florida, FSU, etc.

  • dookiepukie Dec 3, 2012

Money isn't everything. Plus, I'm sure things salary-wise will be looking, quite a bit up, for Coach D at State the Great when there's success in the future.

They're a young family that's moved to an area that's continuously ranked as a top place to raise a family. Some things are more important than the size of a bank account.

  • TVs_Deceit Dec 3, 2012

    View quoted thread

So, basically your point is that Coach D is like Moses? Led them to the promised land but didn't go himself?

Anyway.. I suspect NIU got the O Bowl bid partly because of Coach D moving to State the Great. Lot of connections there.. NIU ex-coach moves to ACC, - then his ex-team gets picked to play an ACC team - that was upset earlier in the year by - the team their ex-coach moved to. Brings more drama to the game, and of course, TV likes that in terms of creating interest in a game.

So, not only did Coach D lead NIU to a bowl, but his new job is probably a large part of the reason WHY NIU was picked to play against FSU in such a big bowl.

  • TVs_Deceit Dec 3, 2012

    View quoted thread

You don't get to add more parameters to better your ridiculous argument after I point out how stupid it originally was.

There are many reasons, including family as well as career, why someone would want to move to an area that's consistently ranked as one of the best cities in America in several categories.

You need to realize, Raleigh's not the cr4phole your town Wilson is.

But whatever.. make yourself happy and stay in the grocery bagging job you've had since high school and refuse any offers of a promotion and better life so you don't disgust yourself.

Though that's a shame since obviously you're a proven expert at reading people's minds and knowing why they do what they do, and could disgustingly move up in life.

Get real with yourself dude. Right now you're just a hater that's gonna hate. Work on your own life so you can feel better about yourself, and you won't have the need anymore to invent negative things about others in an attempt to feel better about yourself.

  • corey3rd Dec 3, 2012
