This is cool. If they can make it look really nice, could be a great success. If you've ever been to Byrd theatre in Richmond VA, it's beautiful and successful.

"There is no downtown in Cary or Raleigh. If you really want to see how a downtown works and looks go to Apex."

Ok, I can see why you would think Cary doesn't have a downtown. It is small. But Raleigh doesn't have a downtown? What? What do you propose we call that big area of old buildings with the capital and the governors mansion?

"Wish they would build a convention center like Raleigh or an entertainment center like RR."

There is no room for, much less a need for a convention center in Apex. An entertainment center? They've done nothing but lose money on the one RR built.

"Government should stay out of private enterprise. Wonder if they have considered where people would park --that is if they have anyone interesed."

There is parking in downtown Cary. Not a lot, but enough for one tiny theatre.

    You busted me."

See? The truth will set you free!!!! Come on down tonight and we'll sing Kumbaya by the Town tree. Betcha Apex doesn't have an awesome tree like Cary. ;)

  • piene2 Dec 3, 3:27 p.m.

I wish they would bring back drive in theaters. Not only were they a lot of fun but they were very useful navigation aids. I had my Tri-pacer at a small airport that was hard to find in the dark but there was a drive in theater close to it and I always steered for that.

  • wu Dec 3, 2:34 p.m.

I love downtown Apex! Cary will never come close to it!

  • ugotme Dec 3, 12:13 p.m.

It better be an IMAX theatre, or it won't last very long!

  • LuvLivingInCary Dec 3, 11:51 a.m.

last time i just tried to go through downtown apex it took a few minutes to go one block. people have to back in parallel parking and traffic waits on that. if you can't find parking on the street you can forget it and expect to park in the boonies blocks away from where you are going.

  • Nope Dec 3, 11:51 a.m.

"Well, don't blink if you do... you will probably miss it!"

How does that differ from Apex's one-block "downtown"

  • superman Dec 3, 11:15 a.m.

You obviously haven't been in the downtown area lately. That's ok, we don't want you nay sayers corrupting our nice town. And by the way, the movie theater will add a lot of charm and I bet you will be one of the first to check it out, though you would never admit it.

  • immaannoid Dec 3, 11:12 a.m.

"cary's doing it right and like i said the smart investors are about to win big." prozac

You sound like a Cary Town Employee!

What's the "Big Win"? Cary has been trying to beef up their downtown as far back as I can remember. I graduated from CHS in the mid-70's and Cary looks pretty much the same. More government buildings, but that's about it. Oh, they put that mess in the middle of Academy and Chatham, then removed it.

Face it, Cary's "downtown" can't get past its original reason for being: a railroad junction.

  • Its the who what Dec 3, 11:05 a.m.

I hope they hire security guards. Who knows what some criminal has in store for this crime ridden town.

  • southerntalent Dec 3, 11:05 a.m.

lots of old nc downtowns had the same small theatres, shame they went by the wayside.Erie Pa actually has one of the first theatres the warner bros built during the depression

  • immaannoid Dec 3, 11:00 a.m.

Yes it does, and it is quite nice. I just went for a walk Saturday and looked at the art installations along Academy St." Gravy

"Dose anyone even go to a single show movie theater anymore. I can't remember the last time a single show even got my attention.

....Well, when I go to see a movies, I am going to see one movie, not multiple movies. How many other movies are playing is not a factor......as a matter of fact, theaters that tend to show a lot of movies tend to be less attractive to me.....more traffic and congestion inside."

LOL, didn;t think of it that way. I just figured they meant "single screen theater".

  • hollylama Dec 3, 10:15 a.m.

    Drive-ins

  • GravyPig Dec 3, 10:13 a.m.

"LOL. One block in Apex's downtown has more character than Cary's entire "downtown"."

You only disparage Cary because you are secretly love Downtown Cary but are too afraid to admit it. You probably have a little shrine tucked away in a closet somwhere so you can be close to Downtown Cary as much as possible. It's ok to openly love Downtown Cary.

to add to the cary na sayers that no one knows where downtown cary is...they seem to have 10,000 cars a day from apex plow through downtown cary during rush hour. cary's doing it right and like i said the smart investors are about to win big.

  • chattycat Dec 3, 9:01 a.m.

This is great for downtown Cary. I agree that Apex downtown is much more appealing, but changes are coming to Cary, slowly, that will make it a nice place to spend some time. I live in Cary and am very happy about this!!

  • GravyPig Dec 3, 8:58 a.m.

"Dose anyone even go to a single show movie theater anymore. I can't remember the last time a single show even got my attention."

I imagine it has something to do with the cozy feeling that a small theatre provides. If you've ever taken in a flick at the Rialto, you'll understand what I mean.

  • LuvLivingInCary Dec 3, 8:55 a.m.

the only thing downtown apex has going is high rent. $600 a month for a second floor office. just ask the merchants down there how they are doing financially. most of them live month to month. the churn rate is high on merchants coming in and out. the facade never changes so most people never notice the instability.

so the lesson is never go on curb appeal and assume it downtown apex is the perfect utopia everyone wants.

cary's downtown is growing and there are many investors interested. all the na sayers can keep their money invested in their 0.75% APR CD but the smart investors will be rewarded nicely.

  • JustAName Dec 3, 8:13 a.m.

You forgot to mention the part where the initial budget was $3 million and is now $3 million over budget.

  • immaannoid Dec 3, 8:13 a.m.
