"bordering on depraved indifference to not have Spanish speaking people at all nine eleven call centers"
If you have Spanish speaking people at all the centers, you should have to add Asian, German, French, etc. Yes, Spanish is quickly growing because everyone else was expected to LEARN ENGLISH when they moved to this country to be a part of what already was established! Go to Mexico (non-tourist area) and expect them to bother with your English. Get real!

  • donewithecu Dec 4, 4:34 p.m.

Please take a look at this about 'official language'. It states that the US has no official language, but certain states have it as their official language.

"And by the way, we Native Americans don't speak "dialects"; we speak the language of our Native American Nations, here long before anyone else was,
    Heuman Bean"

You are not even close. Actually you are off by a few millenniums. Man hadn't even evolved to H*mo Sapiens when they crossed to the Americas from Asia.

"While there is general agreement that America was first settled from Asia by people who migrated across Beringia, the pattern of migration, its timing, and the place of origin in Asia of the peoples who migrated to America remains unclear."

  • piene2 Dec 3, 2:11 p.m.

"It is unfortunate for the boy but there is nothing that can be done about it."

That surly is the understatement of the millennium. For starters unfortunate is about as sorry a comment as can be imagined. The boy did not lose his comb, he nearly died. second it is absolutely unacceptable, bordering on depraved indifference to not have Spanish speaking people at all nine eleven call centers. While The United States does not have an official language both English and Spanish predominate and should be available to accommodate both language groups.

  • driverkid3 Dec 3, 9:47 a.m.

Heuman Bean, if all the people that came here today would be like your grand and great grand parents, it would be a wonderful thing. Unfortunately, it seems that a huge blanket of entitlement mindset is being used now, and that's a shame.

  • driverkid3 Dec 3, 9:29 a.m.

A good reason to try and learn the dominant language of the country you're in, at least some of the most important phrases. phrases.

  • delta29alpha Dec 3, 8:43 a.m.

No sense in arguing about it, fact is people from different cultures speak different languages. Its inevitable that incidences like this will occasionally happen. It is unfortunate for the boy but there is nothing that can be done about it. Apparently there was an arrangement to contact a translator but unfortunately these things take time. Ultimately it is the parents responsibility to take care of the child which means having some kind of plan to communicate in case of emergency when you are in a foreign land where your language is not dominate. I know that there are free apps for smart phones that translate your speech directly into whatever language you choose. perhaps a dedicated device can be produced cheaply enough for immigrants to buy for emergencies.

And by the way, we Native Americans don't speak "dialects"; we speak the language of our Native American Nations, here long before anyone else was, and we didn't require the white man to speak our language because our languages were so many, that in some cases we didn't even understand one another though our skin was of similar colors.

retiredindependentpopo - "And don't give me your "culture" mumbo-jumbo. We speak English as a predominant language in AMERICA."

I don't have a problem with them speaking Spanish with each other.

Heck, my grandparents spoke Hungarian all the time, especially among family, but they spoke fluent English too. They had to learn it to become citizens of the US, and they were proud to do so.

That's what these people not only should be required to do, it's what they NEED, so when they need help in an emergency, someone can get it to them quickly, as this story so clearly indicates.

Well, I guess we need to get to work on converting our entire language to Spanish to accomodate these folks. We bend and bow for everything else.
Just wonder though that if we Americans were to start fleeing and flood other countries how accomodating would they be to change their language, beliefs, religion, etc. Not very, but that is ok, we will keep bending and bowing until the American is nothing more than an immigrant, legal or illegal in our own country and we will no longer have a place.

  • Dynol Yn Cael Ei Nov 30, 7:31 p.m.

WooHoo - "There are translators for most if not all major languages (its actually a requirement for local government agencies who accept federal funding to have access to them) and since when did it become the 'policy' of Hispanics to "refuse to learn English???'"

You sure do like to keep stirring the pot, especially on nebulous grounds. The fact is, even in government channels, one has to SEARCH for someone that speaks many languages from around the world.

And they aren't just standing around with their fingers up their noses waiting for someone to need them. They're doing other work while waiting which is what I suppose this 911's translator was doing - other work.

The point is, the child is dead, and if just one person in that house had been able to speak English, perhaps he'd be alive today.

Isn't that the most important point in this story?

Learn the main language of a country, just in case an emergency arises and you need it.

    sigh

  • WooHoo2You Nov 30, 7:30 p.m.

They also need to know what type of people and equipment is needed, i.e. police only, fire workers only, ambulance/EMT only, police AND fire personnel only, etc. etc.- Heuman Bean

And to be able to exactly describe the situation, weapons involved, specific injuries, number of intruders, good descriptions of each, etc...you know the things that most native English speakers cannot do well while under extreme stress / panic? You have listened to 911 calls before, correct??? But I'm sure you sound like Morgan Freeman narrating after a child has been shot.....

  • Scubagirl Nov 30, 7:28 p.m.

Actually, and I might be wrong but don't think so, when you call 911 they ALL come-EMS, LEO, Fire.......Maybe it's different in each county but in Brunswick they sent them all when I had to call once and they knew they all weren't needed.

Interesting comments; we don't know if the family was here illegally but we assume that they were as they couldn't speak our general language of English. The statement of "it seems the decent thing to do would be to make sure they can get access to lifesaving public services" is very misguided as they do have access & it is the same access as everyone else - the 911 system. My question is would we be having this conversation if their language was Japanese, Russian or any of the other 100s of languages spoken in the world today. Look around you when you are out. Hispanics are treated special, as so many signs are in English & Spanish. By doing this we are reinforcing the lack of a need to learn English & and discriminating against every other culture.

No Herman it doesn't. Ever been to Mexico on vacation? I have. Met a dive master making 40 thousand a year. Invited him to come visit. He said he couldn't. Had a girlfriend in Spain. Traveled there all the time. Said Mexicans had a great deal of trouble just visiting legally.
There here, they don't speak enough English to call for emergency help and are migrant workers. Sorry I must have jumped to a conclusion.

  • busyb97 Nov 30, 7:04 p.m.

I thought the 911 system was supposed to be able to get your location? I realize this guy must have been on a cell phone- so maybe that was the problem, since getting help for 911 on a cell phone is not easy no matter WHAT language you speak. We were reporting a drunk driver once on our cell, and it was a pain in the rear to get the dispatcher to even understand what COUNTY we were in, let alone the specifics. She finally patched us to the county sheriff office! Heaven forbid you have a real emergency and can't speak for yourself or something.

I don't think the translation was the issue here entirely. 911 should just need one main piece of information - LOCATION. Get there first, then work out the details in the process. As you have responders on the way, you can fill them in with the rest as you get it.

But I'll help you a little: "Despite common belief, English is not the official language of the United States at a Federal level. It is the de facto, official language because 82% of people claim it as their mother tongue, and 96% say that they speak it 'well' or 'very well.'

Watched the Today Show when they were swearing in new US Citizens, and it was obvious some of them were just moving their mouths and not saying the correct words. I have been through the immigration process with a fiance from England. I know that the process is long and expensive, but speaking the language should be a PRE-REQUISITE for a drivers license, citizenship etc.

Ever been to the DMV? How many languages do the offer the test in???? Only one language on the road signs!
