No, getting the flu shot does not cause you to get the flu, that is a proven fact...I never got the flu shot and was never sick, until I hand open heart surgery 2 years ago, now it is required. please, 6 mos and older get the flu shot, it doesnt hurt and is covered by all ins companies.. if you can not afford the shot then find the social services office and they will help..good luck.

  • smegma Dec 4, 1:19 p.m.

i never get the shot and i never get the flu

  • dgbrickey Nov 30, 6:15 p.m.

I had my flu shot about 3 months ago. I got the flu a couple of weeks ago -- thought it was gone, but something is back -- bronchial infection? Will keep a check on it. -- Nasty stuff!

"Lets see, 314,800,000 people in US currently and 25K are going to die from the flu according to this article. I'll take my chances before putting that stuff in my body."

There's < 1,000 deaths each year from firearm accidents in the US. Does that mean you're comfortable pointing a loaded gun in your face?

  • Made In USA Nov 29, 5:36 p.m.

BlahBlahBlahBlahBlah - Yes, you can still get the flu even after getting a flu shot. But generally the symptoms are much less severe than had you not received the shot.

  • BlahBlahBlahBlahBlah Nov 29, 5:12 p.m.

I took my flu shot but I was wondering if you could still get the flu? Anyone heard any reports on that?

  • NC Reader Nov 29, 4:22 p.m.

The only years I've had the flu are when I was "too busy" to get the shot. Never again. I get it as soon as I can every year.

  • joeBob Nov 29, 4:19 p.m.

Lets see, 314,800,000 people in US currently and 25K are going to die from the flu according to this article. I'll take my chances before putting that stuff in my body. Drug companies like Merck have these "spokes" people in their pocket. Don't believe the hype.

I'm thankful there are rational, educated people here like simplelogic, innocent bystander 3, and storchheim to help balance out the nonsense and pseudoscience that is regularly displayed in threads like these.

  • simplelogic Nov 29, 3:26 p.m.

Uhavenoclu, placebos are only used in clinical trials to assess efficacy of new drugs - they don't go on the market for ANY condition. Pharmaceuticals with no active ingredient don't go over well with the FDA.

"Taking 10,000 mil Vitamin D3 has been shown to be as effective as the flu vaccine with no side affects" -theendoftheroad

First, your numbers are way off and, second, the study in the link you provided had many flaws. They found a 40% decrease in influenza A but also a 40% INCREASE in influenza B, so overall there was no effect of Vitamin D. Also the study was done on Children (and a very number at that) so any conclusion that Vitamin D is effective against the flu in adults or susceptible people is a stretch.

  • storchheim Nov 29, 3:06 p.m.

Vitamin D is fat-soluble. You can't whiz out any excess. Don't exceed the dose.

  • Uhavenoclu Nov 29, 2:44 p.m.

Many meds that are made for one condition are actually used for other conditions. Many are placebos just name has been changed.
It's called power of suggestion, once a perfectly healthy man was told he looked pale and ill and was told by many and he started to feel and think it. Then was told he was about to fdie.
He died a few days later. Another man who's insides were mangled told himself he ws healthy and lived a good life.
It is as you believe and we are all healthy if we believe in ourselves and don't depend on others.

  • Hapicampr Nov 29, 2:38 p.m.

I've had the flu 3 times and it gets worse each time. I've been getting a flu shot for the past 3 years and 'knock wood' no flu.
There is a nasty cold going around the triangle that includes fever. Wash your hands and don't touch your face. No shot for the cold out there.

"Taking 10,000 mil Vitamin D3 has been shown to be as effective as the flu vaccine with no side affects"

Not a good idea to take megadoses of any vitamins unless you talk to your doc first. Vitamin D can be toxic in high amounts.

  • wakethezombies Nov 29, 2:14 p.m.

The levels of ignorance about the flu vaccine never cease to amaze me. Anecdotal comments like, "I got sick the year I got the flu shot, therefore I won't get the shot" display absolute nonsense, you guys! Please ask your doctors about it. Don't apply your own "logic" to your decision-making, for the good of all of us!!

I took the flu shot last year and ended up in the ER. Needless to say, I will not be getting the flu shot this year. Healthy living and good hygenie will prevent any sickness. I am also a firm believer in taking vitamins as well.

  • simplelogic Nov 29, 1:55 p.m.

"Vitamin D is generally safe, but in high doses scientists say it can pull calcium from bones, causing kidney problems and heart disease. The Institute of Medicine report says vitamin D may be toxic if you take more than 10,000 IUs a day, and warns the risk of harm may begin to increase at 4,000 IUs daily."

Hard to call that "no side effects". Get the vaccine.

  • JennyB Nov 29, 1:54 p.m.

We will not be doing the flu vaccine in my house. Never have, and never plan to. Hubby had it when the military required him, and he was sicker than a dog several times. Ya ya ya, I know it can be a different strand of flu but I'll spare myself the needle. Instead, lets all (gasp) wash our hands, cover our mouths, and not spread snot everywhere!

  • PracticalMagick Nov 29, 1:51 p.m.

All I know is that the years that I have taken the shot are the years that I have been sick as a dog. Last year, before this stupid thing was madated at work, I didn't take one. I didn't get sick. Not once with a fever. This year I've been down with crud that suspiciously mocks the flu, but it couldn't POSSIBLY be, because, you know...I had the flu shot.

  • simplelogic Nov 29, 1:50 p.m.

I try to get the flu shot every year. So far no problems with the shot, and no flu since I started getting it. I've had flu twice in my life, and I NEVER want to get it again.

  • TeenDad4_WorldTour Nov 29, 1:49 p.m.

We don't do the flu shot in this house. And although I'm currently sick - it isn't with the flu - its bronchitis. Don't think some shot would have saved me from this.

Correct, there is no bronchitis shot, but a flu shot will help prevent you from getting the flu. One shot does not prevent all illnesses.

  • blbsion Nov 29, 1:45 p.m.

Is there an inexpensive place offering the flu shot?

Wags - so what does a stomach virus (which is NOT the influenza virus) have to do with the flu? there is no such thing as the stomach flu!

We don't do the flu shot in this house. And although I'm currently sick - it isn't with the flu - its bronchitis. Don't think some shot would have saved me from this.

  • Lifeliving Nov 29, 1:18 p.m.

The times I have had the shot I got sick! I mean SICKKKKK! So I feel the shot is useless!

  • Screw WrAl Nov 29, 1:11 p.m.

Is it at Pandemic levels yet?

It shouldn't be long if not.

  • Uhavenoclu Nov 29, 1:06 p.m.

Never have had a flu shot and have not had the flu since I was little. Even without wearing a jacket..
Oit is as you believe and are led to believe.Age is a part of time and time does not exist it ws invented so you want to act your age then so be it, get the grey hair wrinkles and all the old ago symptoms. You want to be healthy then be as you want to feel.

  • PracticalMagick Nov 29, 12:59 p.m.

the facility where I work makes annual flu shots a condition of employment. No flu shot, no job...

  • Wags Nov 29, 12:56 p.m.

A 24 hour stomache virus has made the rounds in our house. It's was not a pretty site.

  • Scubagirl Nov 29, 12:49 p.m.

I try to always get my flu shots earlier in October-seems to help quite a bit compared to those who wait. Also kinda hard to stay away from kids when you work w/ their parents who come to work and share what their kids have brought home, then the office rounds begin. :(

  • pediatrician Nov 29, 12:35 p.m.

we have had a ton of flu cases in the past 2 wks.
flu shot takes about 2 wks to give you immunity, so get it soon, or stay away from schools and small kids....
