This 56-year-old Raleigh native knows downtown is NOT the place to be at 2:30 a.m. - sorry, but true. And yes this is my neighborhood too moreso than you. This is NOT NYC and I wished people would stop trying to make it that. Hailing a taxi, really?

Raleigh downtown is so safe compared to any other city. So stay away if you want torchhappysean, but you are the one missing out, and too scared to live life.

Something smells fishy in this story to me. First off, who needs help hailing a taxi in Raleigh? It's not NYC. Secondly, who needs to set a purse down to hail a taxi? Is it that hard to wave 1 arm in the air while carrying a purse? Thirdly, who sets a purse down next to their car at 2:30am (vs. just putting it in her car). Also, if she has a car, why not drive the friend home instead of a taxi? Lastly, the description is way to plain and vague. All 4 men were "clean cut, well dressed with close cropped hair".

I could be wrong, but it seems like there is more to the story to me.

This is as far from "typical" as possible when it comes to downtown. What about the thousands of other people who went out that night without incident? Stay home and hide from the world if you want, but don't insult my neighborhood while you do it.

Got to love that typical downtown nightlife!!! And the city counsel still wonders why moving events like the 4th of July fireworks there was and still is a bad idea!!!

Don't lay your purse anywhere @ 2:30am. Nothing good is going to come of it. This sounds like a crime of opportunity. The whooping that homeboy took was incidental. From the article, 4 striking young lads beat this guy up in route to a polo match.
