I don't think Coach Cowher would want to work for Dr. Yow! REALLY!

Best case we could have been 11-1. Worst case, we could have lost a few others.

Keep in mind, in order to reach 7-5, Maryland had to miss a chip shot and we had to steal one from FSU.

  • BigUNCFan Nov 27, 2012

Debbie is certainly not well liked at Md. and she left behind a lot of debt and some say she ran off Gary Williams although I think at the end, he just had reached the end and wanted to retire. Gary did not want to deal with AAU coaches and that hurt him b/c the recruting game has changed so much and he wanted no part of that. Needless to say, he and she did not get along.

As for her tenure here at NCSU, she has made what we can consider a pretty good hoops hire as far as we can tell. He immediately took Sid's players and parlayed them in one year to a sweet 16 and almost an elite 8 if one or two more shots fell.

He did the same thing at Alabama early on but things trailed off win wise and he had a personal scandal there than combined with his not winning enough games, probably got him fired. The jury is still out on him but it does look promising.

I suspect that there will be an announcement by the weekend or early next week if I had to guess. If they have to go through several names and end up with a young assistant, then Debbie messed up. If you fire a coach like TOB that ran a clean program and went to bowls, you had better have a home run hire in your pocket that will take the job and you'll have to pay big time hire money. If you get the next "hot assistant" that has no HC experience, then you really took a risk. It worked with Chip Kelley so it might work out but it is a big risk.

at least this article takes the heat off the heels for awhile. the n& o and wral keep repeating the same old stuff. they will report sec by sec your coach searching process till u are sick of it.

  • gswalker51 Nov 27, 2012

Great coaches come along once in a lifetime. So-so coaches (Sheridan, O'Cain, Amato, O'Brien, etc.) are a dime a dozen. I've been saying it since they gave Athletics Director/Basketball Coach Jim Valvano the boot back in 1990, NC State deserves 100 years of frustration and disappointment. 22 down, 78 to go.

Unfortunately, NCSU is doing what almost every Div 1 school is doing in football: bringing in a ton of unqualified students as athletes and then not graduating them. NCSU football roster has a ton of "exemptions" because of their athletic prowess.

What was the graduation rate under O'Brien?

NCSU is not graduating their players because they get players who cannot graduate.

This is not a particular dig at NCSU because obviously UNC-CH did the same thing. So does Miami, FSU, Clemson, VT, etc, etc.

  • dbjhuff Nov 27, 2012

TOB ran a solid program. Why is winning big in football so important?, I hope
that Yow doesn't lower academic standards for recruiting like they did at
Maryland. I can live with a 7-5 record and a bowl bid for the players. I can't
live with a lowering of the NCSU Academic Standards upon major Universitys.
We are a top ten educational value for the 4th straight year. Is there a better
    top ten to be in?

There have been several posts about Cowher coming back to State. Let's be objective here. I'm a transplant and have no allegiance to anyone here flaming other schools. If Cowher were to coach again, it would be for the Panthers; not the Wolfpack. First he would make more money there; especially counting endorsements. Second, one of the big problems Yow had with TOB was his unwillingness to be an active recruiter as opposed to letting assistants doing the recruiting and him coming in as a closer. Do you really think Cowher wants to spend all of his time recruiting for less money than he could make in the pros? It's not happening. The best State can do is get an up and coming small conference head coach like UNC did when they hired Mack Brown from Tulane. If they do, it will be a good move.

I am retired US Army and a Iraqi Freedom Veteran. I served in Iraq for a year of my life. When I came home, I hated everybody. EVERYBODY! I didn't want people to tell me thank you because, to me, I didn't do it for them. I was so angry when people were more concerned about American Idle and stuff like that.

Now, I realize something. The 17 friends that are now dead, dying, killed themselves, or are drastically injured can't do the same things they used to do. I owe it to them to live a happy life. People who aren't wrapped up about the problems of the world sure seem happy. I want to be happy. More importantly, I appreciate the sacrifices of my brother. I also appreciate that because of sacrifices of them and me, we live in a world where we can be concerned with such trivial things. TO me, when someone gets excited about something trivial like American Idle or in this case, my alma matter, I take it as a JOB WELL DONE SOLDIER!

How long until we again hear the NC State football faithful uttering their three favorite words.....FIRE THE COACH!!!!!!?

  • smplybttr2 Nov 26, 2012

Here's my take on what's going to happen:

Two years with new coach with mediocre seasons. Everyone says that it takes time to build 'his team'.
Third season is mediocre, but basketball team is still getting their handed to them, so grumbling about Yow's job gets louder.
Fourth or fifth season, Yow is gone, Gottfried is gone/ going, new AD comes in, rinse, repeat...

If you saw how we lost to Miami and UNC rather than doing a quick glance at the results of our schedule then it would make sense. Also to get ran out of our own house against a, no offense, much weaker UVA team was very frustrating. I fully support the firing of TOB and I'm pretty sure most other NC State fans feel the same way.

"We"? IF you are a State fan, you aren't much of one to be trying to kick debbie out the door.

  • Sandbar33 Nov 26, 2012

    CrazyFox

Decent coach and 7-5 program leads to empty seats and that's the bottom line. NC State strives to be the best in textiles and engineering why not Football? Suggesting that more wins has to come at the expense of academic integrity is putting the cart before the horse. There were plenty of foul-ups at State under TOB as well. It's the nature of the beast

Totally amazing.. Decent coach, good program, and show him the door. Pony up $1.2M per contract commitments. Plus search firm fees. Forget about little things like academic integrity. I agree with other posts.... NCAA will be at State soon enough...

  • Sandbar33 Nov 26, 2012

The football landscape has changed.....Would you rather see a Clemson or Oregon offense or a conservative TOB 7-5 offense?

State isn't going to land Top 10 recruiting classes. If they want to win 10 games it will take some innovation. That means a high risk coaching move but worth that risk

"Now who, other than a coordinator, would want to go to a school who fires a coach who has been to 3 straight bowl games? As a Pack fan, I fear that we may have once again shot ourselves in the foot"

3 straight subpar bowl games.....TOB had no intentions of coaching until he was in his 80's. Get a younger, more energetic go getter who relates to the fans while the quiver is full of arrows. It might just result in State going somewhere other than Charlotte every year as 5th choice in the pecking order

  • GK N.Ral Nov 26, 2012

Apparently Yow learned nothing from the UNC mess. She seems to put winning above everything. Five years from now we will have the NCAA in town investigating the WIN AT ALL COSTS attitude that we now see developing.

  • gswalker51 Nov 26, 2012

C'mon now...if there is one thing I know from attending NC State when they canned Jim Valvano back in 1990...it's that NC States only makes decisions like this for totally logical reasons and the leaders making them are not just knee-jerking to pressure.

  • BigfootBeliever Nov 26, 2012

7-5. Lost early to Tennessee. Lost a close one @ Miami. Lost a close one @ UNC. Lost to a Clemson team that is simply better than NCSU. Lost an unexplainable game to UVA. Beat then #3 FSU. Going bowling. I guess that's not good enough for Debbie.

  • lets go fishin Nov 26, 2012

David Glenn said it. Mediocrity. That IS the definition of NCSU football past, present and future along with all other NC ACC schools. Debbie Yow may be trying to alter the time and space continium but she is gonna need alot more money, smarter big time contributors with hefty green handshakes with recruits cause the ACC ain't the BigTime but money talks and BS walks. Like I said...mediocrity. Debbie and any of her replacements will produce same. 100 plus years of history supports this.

Debbie Yow is to NCSU what Jerry Jones is to the Dallas Cowboys and we all know what he has done to the Cowboys. If you want a Top 25 program and you want it tomorrow then she will need people like T. Boone Pickens and the passion he has for OSU! Meaning the movement starts with SUPPORTERS....NOT MANIACAL MICRO MANAGERS! Where is the WolfPack Club in this process, and why is there no one from the Club not included in the AD's search committee?

You labeled yourself. You were the one talking down Tar Heel fans that shop at Wal Mart, so I guess that means you hate on the NCSU fans who shop at Wal Mart also? Me thinks so and that labels you a snob. Don't worry, you earned it. Never questioned your "math" background, you used the "figured" word and math can be more than just a calculus formula. Maybe some reading comprehension classes would help. You seemed to get awfully defensive about that edumacation though. See what you don't understand is I'm not a hater like you, had a son go to NCSU, wonderful education. I only smack the haters around, not the university. If you can't take the heat, wear more Nomex.

Just remember, you get what you give...
