And it begins, the shopping centers will soon look like those just south of the border, closed, windows broken out, trash all over the place, so nasty even the homeless dont hang in them,,

As they say, location, location, location....

    More union jobs being lost.

It's starting to sound like a pattern.

Unions killed the manufacturing base in this country.

Unions have put the airlines in bankruptcy several times.

The Unions killed Hostess who makes twinkies.

Now Kroger is closing union stores because they aren't profitable.

A low margin business requires lots of volume. Walmart is pulling volume from all of the supermarket chains. I go to all of them. Walmart, I buy a specific set of items that are always cheaper than anywhere else. I do not buy their meat. After that, I go after sale items in HT, Lowes Foods, Kroger, and Food Lion. What is nice is for me, all of these stores are practically next door to eat other.

    piene2,

I worked at Winn-Dixie in high school in Greensboro before they went bankrupt. Stores like Food Lion and Winn Dixie did well in poorer, urban, usually violent, areas of towns because they were low priced, no frills, and very basic. While stores like Harris Teetor and Lowes do well in more upscale areas.

Kroger just shouldn't have opened up stores on New Bern and MLK drive. It's that simple.

"The stores at 1610 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and 4111 New Bern Ave. have been in operation since 1993 and 2002, respectively."

Wrong. The New Bern Ave was built in 1993, when they abandoned the shopping center to the east on New Bern. The '93 Kroger shared a parking lot with the K-Mart that closed years ago. It did not have any signage on New Bern Ave and was hidden behind the empty former Golden Corral. And it was between the old Tower Food Lion and the disaster of a Wal-Mart supercenter just to the east.

The 2002 MLK store 'replaced' the New Bern Winn-Dixie. They left a lot of product in bodega-like shipping carboard, for better or worse. The next nearest grocery stores are all Food Lions -- near the Poole Road and Rock Quarry Road beltline exits, Raleigh Blvd near St. Augs, and to the west, Lake Wheeler or Gorman/Avent Ferry.

Wakefield closed because of the nearby Food Lion, Harris Teeter, and Wal-Marts. This closing leaves a food desert.

    high prices

Not high to like compared to Harris Teeter e.g.

  • piene2 Nov 16, 4:51 p.m.

Kroger is going down for the same reasons Win Dixie went down. Poor selection, high prices and, of course Food Lion and Wal Mart are kicking the dickens out of them.

"How many people will lose jobs in this?"

story says they will help them relocate to other stores, so maybe none. Unless of course some think it's better to get handouts than work.

  • working for deadbeats Nov 16, 4:31 p.m.

The two locations explain it enough. There are two on Creedmoor Rd within two miles of each other and they seem to be doing just fine. Weird.

  • Skywatch_NC Nov 16, 4:27 p.m.

    Harris Teeter 4 Life ya'll

That's what caused the one in Wakefield to eventually go out.

  • Common_Sensey Nov 16, 4:04 p.m.

Yeah, both of those locations should be Food Lion, not Kroger. Food Lion seems to do better in lower income areas. That's why Food Lion isn't known as a "up market" grocery store. I can't remember the last time I'd been in one, but they were always very basic, dirty, bad customer service, but had about the cheapest grocery prices around.

Brotorious, Lowes Foods beat Harris Teeter any day of the week. Especially the ones with the sushi bar, expanded wine/beer section, and the gas stations. Spend $100 and get .10 off gas! Harris Teeter just can't compete with that!

The one on New Bern is in a bad location that is what hurts that store.

  • Skywatch_NC Nov 16, 3:50 p.m.

First the one in Wakefield and now the MLK Jr. Blvd. and New Bern Ave. ones. :(

  • venitapeyton Nov 16, 3:50 p.m.

Naturally its unprofitable to stock hundreds of items that few people want or need.
