Here's another choice we made. Turn these people out on the streets or:
    High Point Furniture Market

    $778,252
    Unmonitored!

  • tarheelfan41 Nov 16, 9:09 a.m.

    No money?
    North Carolina Rural Economic

    $27,220,575
"It found that the department did not follow its own "grant-risk assessment" policy for this group of grants, nor did it properly track how the money was spent and ensure that it went to its intended purposes."

  • tarheelfan41 Nov 16, 9:07 a.m.

    ANOTHER POOR CHOICE:
    Biofuels Center of NC

    $4,825,000
Audit: Commerce officials did not monitor legislative grants
    POOR CHOICE COMPOUNDED!

  • tarheelfan41 Nov 16, 9:05 a.m.

    Here's a choice we made:
    NC Minority Support Center

    $3,742,974
But we cannot take care of those that cannot take care of themselves! Poor CHOICE!

  • tarheelfan41 Nov 16, 8:56 a.m.

"The Commerce Department did not adequately monitor how $80 million worth of economic development grant money was spent by 20 nonprofits during fiscal 2011, according to a report issued Thursday by the State Auditor's Office"

We do not have a revenue problem, we have a speding problem. We need to choose more wisely. We threw out $80 million and have no clue how it was spent. Read the article under "News" here on WRAL website. We choose to spend this $80 million on these programs rather than take care of those that cannot take care of themselves!

  • tarheelfan41 Nov 16, 8:45 a.m.

We do not have a revenue problem,we have a spending problem. We (as a state-Purdue) decided to provide baby sitting at public schools rather than take care of these people. We made that choice and now we must live with it. Its all about choices. WE NEED TO CHOOSE BETTER! NOT SPEND MORE!

  • tarheelfan41 Nov 16, 8:35 a.m.

Don't forget NIMBY! These same people will be protesting against group homes when they try to locate in their neighborhood. (NIMBY= Not In My Back Yard)

  • NCHighlander Nov 15, 2:50 p.m.

"Ms. bev perdue had $20 million dollars to spend on public school day care centers, but nothing on these folks"

Look at the raises she could have given all of those poor starving teachers in this state.

  • jdkey Nov 15, 12:52 p.m.

this is another example of why ObamaCare is such a bad idea. People that rely on Government for their well-being end up just like these people. Now the Governor just claimed SHE found 20 million dollars over in DHHS that she could steal and use for her State sanctioned babysitting services. I guess she chose babysitting over these folks.

    You got it 100% right

  • tayled Nov 15, 11:46 a.m.

The legislature created this mess, they should put on their big boy pants, admit the mistake, and correct it. No, they will play politics with it, blaming and finger pointing instead of taking action.

  • kermit60 Nov 15, 10:58 a.m.

Again another group wanting the government to come up with money they don't have. People needd to start facing reality. Politicians have conned them for years with vote buying promises. Reality is setting in and that is the money is no longer there. We have spent and taxed, spent and taxed and have reached the overdraft limit, credit limit, and the savings is empty.

  • pappybigtuna1 Nov 15, 10:49 a.m.

Ms. bev perdue had $20 million dollars to spend on public school day care centers, but nothing on these folks

This is very embarrassing for our state, toss the mentally challenged out on the street, in the winter. Where the people live is not a penthose apartment, as many as 6 people live in the places.

Most of you on this blog would not even enter one of these places, but these folks call it home

You people gave Wake Tech $200 Million for buildings, these are our people they get nothing, something sure seems to have gone screwy

  • esteryates69 Nov 15, 8:30 a.m.

What to you want to bet, those residents did not rally, most likely family member did.No in no way did Obama have any thing to do with it what so ever.I know how it come a time you can not take care of your love ones, and saved money is gone,so you have to have quality place to put them in.If there should thing as one.The family has help out at all times. After they go sleep late at night you go home, stat all over the next day.

  • storchheim Nov 14, 5:53 p.m.

char, don't worry, this is "mercy" Obama style. You voted for him, remember?

  • MadBiker Nov 14, 4:52 p.m.

Now people will start to realize that the government can't afford to take care of everyone.

  • gregg45 Nov 14, 4:46 p.m.

if you cannot bath or cloth yourself,, or take a dump ,p, feed yourself,, , do you really think that is a life???????????? i have a living will that says kill me in 6 weeks if i have no hope,, not evil. i am far from evil,

  • gregg45 Nov 14, 4:31 p.m.

if they can rally. they can work , like i do

  • rushbot Nov 14, 3:44 p.m.

I thought we elected the republicans to enforce economic darwinism. If these protestors do not have a permit to protest, they should go to jail.

  • charmcclainlovesdogs2 Nov 14, 3:31 p.m.

But I guess if you can't clothe or bathe yourself, you have no right to have someone do it for you.

    Crew Dog

I hope you will always be in good health and never have to enter the Nursing Home.

  • charmcclainlovesdogs2 Nov 14, 3:26 p.m.

If they do decide to close these group homes, where in the world will these people go. They will still need help and those helping hands. Mercy! have we come to the point of not caring for certain people. Hello, we are better than that.

  • North Carolina Cutie Nov 14, 3:22 p.m.

Everyone will see when crime go get even worst.

  • lasm Nov 14, 3:16 p.m.

As with most things......we need the "other side" of this situation. And as storchheim says "The g/a homes complained about receiving less entitlement money because of this. Nothing about the welfare of the soon-to-be-ex residents, just their own skins.

DHHS came up with $40 million to "help them transition". Note that we're still talking about the homes, not the residents."

    Smelly, isn't it?

  • anderson Nov 14, 2:55 p.m.

Federal regulators repeatedly demanded that the state apply the same standard for everyone, and a federal judge ruled last December that the state was violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and ordered a common standard to qualify for personal care services.

This is what happens when government is too involved

  • AFSC426X3 Nov 14, 2:49 p.m.

There is something wrong here. But I guess if you can't clothe or bathe yourself, you have no right to have someone do it for you.

  • storchheim Nov 14, 2:23 p.m.

This is confusing but let me try.

Standards were changed, so now some people no longer qualify and will be turned out of group/adult care homes.

The g/a homes complained about receiving less entitlement money because of this. Nothing about the welfare of the soon-to-be-ex residents, just their own skins.

DHHS came up with $40 million to "help them transition". Note that we're still talking about the homes, not the residents.

Since when is the success or failure of a private enterprise decided by the govt and paid for by taxpayer? Oh wait...

We desperately need to flush DHHS and follow up with a strong disinfectant.
