"It would mean that TWO companies would have to build the distribution network and each run wires to your house. Why would any one company spend the money (which was conservative's capital intensive comment) to duplicate infrastructure that was already in place?" - JDNCSU

You also have a tough argument here because many of us from the Northeast grew up in towns (prior 1960) that had two electric utilities with their own plants. We had LILCO (now LIPA) and the town's private electric utility. We had low rates because they were forced to compete on price and service. This lasted until LILCO bribed the state politicans to force all the private electric utilities out of business... and became the sole monopoly with some of the highest rates & worse service in the nation.

  • westernwake1 Nov 13, 7:35 p.m.

"It's you that are wrong westernwake...what would it take to have a choice of two electric service providers to your home? It would mean that TWO companies would have to build the distribution network and each run wires to your house. Why would any one company spend the money (which was conservative's capital intensive comment) to duplicate infrastructure that was already in place? In the end you can only use one set of wires from one provider, what happens to the other provider's wires? Providing duplicate infrastructure does not make economic sense in most cases, and THAT is why when people do not" - JDNCSU

Well in that case - LET'S REMOVE THE LAW THAT ONLY ALLOWS ONE ELECTRIC UTILITY PER TERRITORY and see what happens. We should also do the same thing with Cable TV franchises. You are aware that there are several towns in the U.S. that have TWO CABLE COMPANIES. They have the lowest cable rates and highest rated service.

why is a 10% profit a good thing?
inflation is 3%..maybe.. a 4 or 5% profit..they are a business and business must make money(profit)..but since they are a monopoly the profit should be less..there is less risk on their part..so the profits should be lower..
investing and maintaining power stations is what they do why should they get special treatment for this?? I don't understand. I used saw blades all the time should I get a special rate on new ones? I don't

I just hope they keep the demand use program..we work hard to make this system work..and it pays..

  • eddybal Nov 13, 5:26 p.m.

Conservative, give me a different one.

  • larieke Nov 13, 5:25 p.m.

So the law doesn't give a hoot about economic hard ships for consumers, just for share holders.

How many interpretations of the law would you like based on your convenience?

  • eddybal Nov 13, 5:00 p.m.

pdbullard, those "cheap" coal plants cost a lot of money paid by the health care system. In no other country of the western world do you find these outdated mega polluting coal burning power plants. The reason why utilities are shutting them down is the abundance of cheap natural gas.

  • JDAmbrosio Nov 13, 4:59 p.m.

    It's a ripoff, criminal!

  • pdbullard Nov 13, 4:46 p.m.

This is what you get when to force energy companies to use sources like wind and solar that are not economical. Progress energy is requesting their first hike in 17 years. Those cheap coal facilities are being shut down by the government and the customers will have to pay for it. If you want to know who to blame look in the mirror

  • JDNCSU Nov 13, 4:38 p.m.

cont'd comments....when people do not have a choice of service providers the lone provider is usually set up as a regulated monopoly so they can not charge whatever they feel like...

And where else on earth does anyone have a choice between electric generation utilities?

  • bluecharger Nov 13, 4:22 p.m.

thanks for the savings, Duke! gee, i KNEW this would work out just great!

  • superman Nov 13, 4:20 p.m.

The Utilities Comm is a joke. They need to be done away with in the worst possible way.

  • JDNCSU Nov 13, 4:02 p.m.

Wrong Answer! It is because the industry is a REGULATED MONOPOLY with set territories. Due to this you do not have the opportunity to select your power provider for your home. You only have one option, the company with the monopoly. The few places on the face of the earth that allow competition between electric generation utilities have the lowest price and best service. westernwake1

    chance

With all due respect, you might want to go back and check which party had majorities in both houses of the state legislature in February 2012... (hint: not the democrats)

  • dmzac Nov 13, 3:43 p.m.

start by getting rid of the Utilities Commission: they do absolutely nothing for the consumer. second, why should the consumer pay for this merger? it should never happened: the biggest utility company in the entire country and the consumers have no say.

As consumer, the best way to counter price hikes is by saving electrical power. Next time my electric water heater blows, I will replace it with a tankless natural gas water heater. NG will remain cheap for years to come.

  • eddybal Nov 13, 3:23 p.m.

That is a pretty telling quote:
Duke's lawyer Kiran Mehta countered that the law requires the commission to consider the changing economy only as it relates to shareholders, not consumers.

So the law doesn't give a hoot about economic hard ships for consumers, just for share holders.

  • bjraper Nov 13, 2:59 p.m.

The rich companies keep getting richer and the poor helpless consumers have to pay the price. We haven't had a raise in many years and these companies still want more money. Inflation does not warrent this increase and I hope it will be overturned.

  • pipcolt Nov 13, 2:58 p.m.

"The merger took place with Bev as the Governor. Why did she not stop it?"

Wrong. Purdue has not been able to do anything since the GOP took over the NC house. This is on them

  • junkmail5 Nov 13, 2:10 p.m.

Why is the AG not calling on the State to get rid of the tax on our electric bills? Is the State that greedy? Yes. Why is the AG not calling on the State to let Duke buy fuel and not pay taxes on that fuel. Is the State that greedy? Yes. -whatelseisnew

The state is required to have a balanced budget. They would need to make up the money from those lost taxes either with OTHER taxes or reducing government services.

Which one are you suggesting? (and what new tax or cut services specifically?)

  • xylem01 Nov 13, 2:08 p.m.

Republicans. There ya go! Money, money, money. Greed, greed and more greed! Can't ever get enough and it's all about the "corporation". You know, those things that "are people too".

Well, we voted 'em in, may as well lie down with them and just let it happen.

'Because the industry is very capital intensive!' - Conservative

"Well you guys voted Pat "Duke Energy" McCrory into office. Don't think he or any of his appointees will do anything to stop this. Careful what you wish for."

The rate increase was put in long before McCory was elected. He is not in office right now. Bev is. this is not the first rate increase in the State. Why did the Dems not halt all past rate increases? The merger took place with Bev as the Governor. Why did she not stop it? Well Bev is busy trying to suck money out of people's pockets to keep maintaining State day care for the beggar class. She wanted to continue the significant increase to sales tax, far more harmful than this rate increase from Duke. But hey tax increases are fine with lefties. Mainly because they hope the increases hit somebody else. Hey maybe LIPA can take over our power grids. They are a Government entity. I am sure you would love them no matter how much you had to pay.

Kids are all grown and moved out last bill 62.00.. Turning lights off not running the heat or AC unless you need to turly makes a different. My summer bill high was 82 bucks.

"That 7.2% increase is going to hurt many people. What was Duke Energy Corp. thinking about in these economic times? Are they that greedy?"

The Dems wanted to raise sales taxes during these economic times. Are they that Greedy? The answer is yes. Why is the AG not calling on the State to get rid of the tax on our electric bills? Is the State that greedy? Yes. Why is the AG not calling on the State to let Duke buy fuel and not pay taxes on that fuel. Is the State that greedy? Yes. And various counties, they raised taxes, they put bond referendums on the ballot during these economic times. Are they that greedy? Yes. The State layered on an extra charge for this bogus green energy stuff onto my electric bill. The State levied tolls on 540 something we paid extra 6 cents per gallon since 1989. Are they that greedy in these economic times? Yes.

  • anderson Nov 13, 1:33 p.m.

Remember what obama said about coal? something to the effect of if you want to build a coal plant you can but he would shut it down with the EPA? Well, with fewer energy resources you will get higher prices.

  • awr117 Nov 13, 1:30 p.m.

Regulated Utility 101 - when Duke and Progress were separate they were NOT competitors because each one served a discrete service territory (i.e., service territories were completely separate). After the merger, the service territories have also merged.
