Take you own advice...concern yourself with YOURS and YOURS alone. Remember the NCAA is talking to those involved at Suck U, too.

And the show IS taking it's last curtain call. Get a life.

  • trangary Nov 7, 7:29 a.m.

I am a big Duke fan, but if u think this has only occured at UNC and State, you are wrong. They are just 2 shcools that got caught. Trust me when I say this occurs at any school that has a decent showing in the NCAA standings (AP poll). I am saddened that so many people want to jump on the "bash UNC wagon". This is old news, UNC has been sanctioned, so let it go. The one's I feel bad for are the students that take "gifts". What does that tell the student(s)? If you are gifted enough, we will take care of you. What happens when that gifted student can no longer use their "gift"? I read about it all the time. Bankruptcy. So who suffers in the end.....the student that took the gifts. Teachers would pass the student based on their talent on the court or field, colleges would pass them for the same reason(s). I would MUCH rather see student-athletes paid a salary (but would have to stay in college for 4 years). GO DEVILS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I mean that's cute and all but you picked two athletes out of a sea of others who have never gotten in trouble and are some of the most recognized and respected in their various sports. UNC alums are on par with any other University. You make your list of troubled UNC alums and I can find a longer list at every other major University. With maybe the exception of Duke because they just get drunk and run into large things made of wood.

Its absurd uNC only gets a wrist slap for all this. That program was way out of line and should have gotten the "Death Penalty" for it. They didnt accidently break rules, the purposely broke them across the board, players, coaches, teachers..the NCAA should be ashamed to give them 1 measly year for so many infractions.

  • kbrianf Nov 6, 12:32 p.m.

I can understand why they would have thought receiving gifts from friends was okay, though I find it hard to believe them when they say they were never told it was wrong. What I cannot fathom, however, is how an athlete would think it was completely okay to sell his/her equipment for cash. Even a hardened criminal would know that's not acceptable. I can't decide: were these guys that. . . what's a word I could use here that wouldn't get stripped - lacking in common intelligence, or were they simply that selfish? Tough call.

Exactly, there are million dollar coaches that wouldn't have half of the reputation they have unless they got the best players to come and play for them. If a coach can make millions and do endorsements why can't the players get a stipend or endorsement money to provide for themselves and for their families. A lot of the kids come from low income families and ares and it's tough to live the good life on campus and go home and see your mom or siblings struggling. I'm not advocating giving these kids duffle bags full of money but something reasonable to live on to help keep the sharks away from the programs.

  • BWo Nov 6, 12:16 p.m.

College athletes are already getting paid - it's called a scholarship, although the "scholar" part of that depends entirely on the program. Some are more scholarly than others.

  • Zany Nov 6, 12:05 p.m.

I graduated from UNC and let me assure all you bloggers its academic program is built on integrity and honesty. In my four years, I had to earn my grades and degree. Needless to say, I never took classes in African American Studies.
However, a few self-centered football players along with one "Bad Apple" professor have tarnished the University academic reputation in the eyes of others. These players in question and one sorry professor do not represent UNC academics.
....."Austin asked if what he has told them would be a violation and if it would jeopardize his career." Based on this one statement tells me Marvin Austin could give a rats be-hind about UNC and the repercussions his selfish actions had on the university. If there is one lesson to be learned by my alma mater, don't recruit self-centered athletes that can't perform in the class room. GO HEELS!

I just don't understand why the players get all the blame. If you are friends with millionaires (pro players) like these young men are, why are we labeling them the criminals or scum-bags because they are benefiting from such a relationship?

NCSU just gave Gottfried a salary increase of $750,000. Why can't we pay the players? They could have given him a raise of $250,000 and then given the players (and their families) the other $500,000.

Pay the players. They are earning the money and the Universities are making loads of money on them. They even buy the players jewelry for bowl games (watches and other useless trinkets).

Can we move on? I'm UNC fan so yeah I'm a little bias but stop dragging this thing out. I would be sick of hearing about it if I was a State, Duke or any other fan. I don’t condone their actions but if the players that draw in so much revenue could get a universally NCAA approved stipend stuff like this wouldn’t happen in college. The money they made is chump change in comparison to how much they bring in. Agents are snakes and will still try to sink their teeth into a prospect but at least you can keep their monetary influence at bay for a while. I mean the amounts that they made off of gear is really pathetic when you look at it. How much would an Lawrence Taylor jersey go for right about now? He could probably put one on now and run around the block to get it sweaty and still get $750 for it.

Just remember the one true thing about this he said, she said business and bickering back and forth. We are talking about a very small percentage of the student body and a relatively small percentage of college athletes in general at any college or university. When they (athletes) are caught doing something that is impermissible beyond that of a "regular" student the penalty should be swift, sure and effective i.e. removed from teams, NCAA contacted, loss of scholarship, dismissed from school, etc. Otherwise, the Honor Courts should do their job and be as equally effective.

Bwaahaaahaaa, Duke and UNC bickering about who has the dirtiest program! The answer is UNC but at least Duke threw them that 1 bone.

  • Objective Scientist Nov 6, 10:33 a.m.

How well does the description of the behavior and attitudes of any of those individuals... i.e., Austin, Little, Quinn, McAdoo, etc. "fit" that of the typical "college student"? I'll answer my own question... it does NOT fit! Johnny Cochran (of the OJ Simpson trial) may have said "If the glove don't fit, you must acquit.", but in this case the lack of fit means we MUST ACQUIT! I sincerely believe that what occurred at UNC with the above mentioned players had also occurred/occurs in other schools football/basketball programs - and I do NOT say that to "excuse" UNC in any way - but rather to emphasize the pervasiveness of this type of problem/issue. Our colleges/universities are recruiting athletes - particularly for football and basketball - who have no serious thought of being a serious STUDENT! These UNC players only had one thought... playing intercollegiate football is my ticket to the NFL! (They were living at least part of the life of a very well paid NFL player BEFORE leaving school - hence the problem we have!) They had no true interest in being a COLLEGE STUDENT... and most, if not all, were ill-prepared to succeed academically. Another matter is "character"... in particular, Austin and Little seemed more interested at times in "talking trash" to the opponents than playing the game! They were devoid of anything resembling "sportsmanship" and respect. Our colleges and universities MUST stop admitting athletes - no matter how good they may be on the field/court - who: 1) have NO true interest in being a STUDENT; 2) lack the academic preparation necessary to succeed in college level academic work; and 3) lack in character and fail to respect the construct of "sportsmanship"! Our Chancellors and Presidents - our CEOs of our universities - need to step up to the plate and STOP this nonsense!

Factor in the hush money to Butch and Blake ( 2.7 + 75K ) then , too , factor in the severances/hush money/pensions to Baddour , Nyangoro and DCrowder. Factor in the cash given to JWiley and her legal advice from Joe Cheshire...had he not done it pro-bono. Finally , the players. Untold amounts in cash , bling , travel , accomodations , peanut butter-n-pepper , drugs , booze , "makin' it rain" money , whatever. 100 large is a drop in the bucket. SMU had nuthin' on UNC-CHeat.
