bill0, you do understand the difference between "fraud" and "completely legal", don't you?

  • FE Oct 26, 2012

IRONY - Today I received a letter from the IRS questioning claiming my college age daughter as a dependent. I paid all of her support, she made minimal income, and did NOT claim herself on her own 2011 tax returns.

It's good to know the IRS is so on top of things.......

(I imagine it won't be long until NC Dept of Revenue sends me a "me too" letter which will also require a written response.)

  • Weetie Oct 26, 2012

    Exactly right Mollers!

  • bill0 Oct 26, 2012

"And that excuses the illegals and fraudsters somehow?"

Thanks for not reading my post. If you did, you would notice the first paragraph outlining how to punish them.

The fact remains that the lobbyist who are taking 8 times more money are the BIG problem. What is more scandalous is that their actions are perfectly legal because they have bought off the politicians to make it that way. Even worse, we have a presidential candidate promising to make those investment earnings completely untaxed.

  • DontVote4LiarsCheatsOrThieves Oct 26, 2012

Why in the devil are we accepting tax returns from ILLEGAL aliens? Why isn't our government using those tax returns to ferret them out, charge them with being here illegally, making them serve their time for that crime, and then driving them to the nearest border and handing them over to the authorities in Mexico, even if they weren't from Mexico to begin with?

Instead, we seem to welcome them with open arms even though they've showed disrespect for our country by ignoring its laws.

What kind of sense does that make???

  • Mollers Oct 26, 2012

Get rid of the Child Tax credits altogether. No one should be compensated for having children. Either you can afford them or not.

  • pat7 Oct 26, 2012

Thank you goverment for support these wonder dead beats the suck the life out of the hard working amercians that pay taxes , I hope you go after these wonderful people

  • lumberman Oct 26, 2012

Now the IRS was warned about this 10 years ago. And nothing in BIG government was done about it. What do you think it is going to be like if Obama care goes in to effect. These numbers will be nothing compared to what it is going to be like with the givernment running health care.

  • bill0 Oct 26, 2012

First - I have no sympathy for tax cheats and think they should be prosecuted. If they are here illegally and running these type of schemes, they should be deported and banned for life from reentering the US.

However, lets look at the scale. This fraud is costing $5 billion per year. Compare that to the cost of the completely legal tax dodge of taxing earnings from investments at lower rates than earnings from actually working. That is $38 billion dollars this year. So basically, a handful of powerful lobbyist are cheating our country 8 times more than every illegal and "fraudster" combined.

  • gingerlynn Oct 26, 2012

But if you happen to accidentally underwithhold just a little bit and owe the IRS you better pay it back right away or they will quickly slap a lien on your house and not hesitate to freeze your bank accounts. What is wrong with this picture?????

  • xxcar2 Oct 26, 2012

The IRS is totally incompetent, cannot (or won't) even perform a simple computer check on multiple checks going to the same address. However, the IRS will send out bogus tax bills, penalties and harrassment to businesses and people who have paid every penny of their taxes, but the IRS, again refuses to cross-reference anything.

IRS sends out large FRAUDULENT PAYMENTS with no due diligence to illegals and others, while sending out bogus BILLS, penalties, etc, and harassment to citizens and businesses. The IRS is completely incompetent, along with our "representatives"--wait till they start mucking around as the healthcare "police".

  • luvbailey Oct 26, 2012

I took a moment to compare the credits available on year 2000 tax returns against year 2010 tax returns I have prepared. There have been many changes. On the 2000 forms there were basically 2 refundable credits (refundable means you get money back even if your tax was zero)- the earned income credit and the child credit (note: this is different from the child CARE credit). By the year 2010 we have added a refundable American Opportunity Credit (education credit)a refundable child adoption credit, a refundable health coverage tax credit and a refundable first time home buyer credit.

During this 10 years Congress and the White House were controlled by both D's and R's. It obvious that Congress wanted certain groups of people to get money from the govt even if they had zero tax. The country did fine before all these credits and would do fine again without them. But Congress will never give up the ability to manipulate the tax code for political purposes. So quit dreaming flat tax.

  • fatchanceimwrong Oct 26, 2012

When dealing with millions of dollars as in this case, you can bet there is fraud from within the IRS either by individuals in cahoots with the recipients or someone from higher up making sure heads turn the other way.

  • bdu4dals2 Oct 26, 2012

Notice this was not a topic in any of the debates. Could this be an indictaor that they don't care??

  • storchheim Oct 26, 2012

The IRS has hammered me not once, but three times, over three different problems in 2010. IOW they saw one, hammered; months later, question 2; just last month, another issue. In the first two cases they were dishonest and owed me. In the third it was a matter of $104.56, which I sent. But they don't question this stuff?

  • Country Girlz Have MORE fun Oct 26, 2012

  • pedsrndad Oct 26, 2012

We make a single mistake in filling out our return one year and get an immediate letter from the IRS and they send hundreds of checks to one address and nobody notices? Any competent programmer would be able in a very short time to set up some system to screen and red flag this type of situation. Who are we hiring to work in our Federal government?

  • pedsrndad Oct 26, 2012

Welcome to the world of Socialism folks. Sign up, its all free! Politicians over many years created a system to "help" people but of course, without oversight, the system has turned into a money machine for frauds. Refunds should be just that, a return only of money you paid. In no case should anyone get "back" money they never paid. Are the Treasury & IRS Departments so incompetent they did not notice multiple returns to the same address? We spend billions of our tax dollars to reward criminals that figured out the cracks in the system. These people should be so severely punished no one wants to try again.

  • wayneboyd Oct 26, 2012

In the last debate Obama made a statement saying from the outside America still looked like the land of opportunity. Boy if Mexico looked this good to me I'd be halfway there already.

I sent an email asking my congresswoman why she is allowing this to happen, has everyone else (REGARDLESS of party affiliation)? Our house of representatives has the power of the purse so why dont we hold all of them accountable? If you dont, I would suggest you need not complain.

  • tarheelfan41 Oct 26, 2012

They come to America illegaly becuse they want a better way of life....THEY FOUND IT!!!

  • AtALost Oct 26, 2012

This is beyond ridiculous but like many employers, the best and the brightest are passed over for the cheapest and most agreeable employees. Everyone smiles and pretends it's all ok. In addition to WIC, free health care, etc. now we find we're giving away much more. This explains why we're so broke. $4B in fraud just for this issue and just in NC? This also explains why illegals are bold enough to protest about rights when they're clearly breaking the law. If the IRS is this ignorant, no reason to believe the rest of the government is any better. The lesson learned is to do your taxes, just lie on them repeatedly. Next time, they'll be sure to use different addresses.

  • Naysayer Oct 26, 2012

"This person paid no taxes, but managed to get a ~7000 dollar tax refund. Reform is necessary. How do you get a refund if you don't pay in the first place?" -- Roy G Biv

Actually, it is quite easy and very common. With a little creative "answers" and some extra Social Security cards/numbers, between the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and/or the Additional Child Tax Credit it happens all the time.

Many "tax businesses" thrive on this type of return, and they can grease the skids even more in late January while also collecting several hundred dollars per return for their professional services.

Try an internet search for tax fraud in these areas, and you will be astonished! (Also check out the video link I provided earlier today.)

Not smart enough to carry out a crime like this, how gullible can one be, they got here, stayed here, and are probably reveiving some other type of system aid, they know how to use this country more than those of us that are citizans.

  • 101jackson101 Oct 26, 2012

It's bad enough when our own citizans get away with this type crime, but when we have illegals who can barely speak or write in our countries language pulling off a stunt like this, well it's just right shameful and shows how lacking our government employees really are.

  • too-obvious Oct 26, 2012

They need SAS and those boys at DHHS to run their computers. I could do it in a day, but...that's the problem. They have to make it look like a vast problem and collect lots and lots of money to pay themselves bonuses and give work to their cronies...just like DHHS.

...the reality is that illegal immigrants defraud the tax system & don't pay a dime.

It's not just illegals. I know someone who has no job and is on 100% gov't assistance. Section 8, EBT, Medicaid, Work First. This person paid no taxes, but managed to get a ~7000 dollar tax refund. Reform is necessary. How do you get a refund if you don't pay in the first place?

  • Roy G Biv Oct 26, 2012

Why does anybody get a tax refund anyway?? Do away with the IRS and all the stupid credits (and yes I do have children)leave the payroll taxes and sales taxes and save people the paperwork! The accountability should be with the companies responsible for collecting taxes, not with Joe the Plumber and his 1040.

  • bassplayer4dalord Oct 26, 2012

"The IRS defended its interpretation of the tax code, which states that illegal immigrants who pay no taxes are eligible for the tax credits."
How is it possible that those that pay NO taxes or have NO liability are enabled to claim credit and money from those of us that do? I can understand those that pay and file and are below the poverty level getting a credit. This is absurd!

  • luvbailey Oct 26, 2012
