Mr. Rogers ‘statement that he is committed to Raleigh is hard to believe. Just wait until a weather event causes power outages in the triangle and the Charlotte areas and they pull Raleigh area based repair crews to Charlotte and leave us in the dark for longer. This is what has happened in the past to Durham's Duke Energy customers.

The state of NC needs choice- competition. not government backed monopolies.
    aspenstreet1717

Let me explain this - power generation throughout the country is a regulated monopoly. This is because it is a highly capital intensive business. There are few independent power producers but they are few and far between. They still end of selling it to the regulated utilities who then get the power into your residences. This business is not like running pizza joints. Please educate yourself before you make such sweeping statements.

What is his definition of long term?

  • meeper Sep 27, 2012

Translation: Dear Leader is closing all of the coal fired plants, we've merged in to one giant government sponsored monopoly, and that gives us the green light to raise your rates through the roof, and there's not one thing you can do about it. Don't like it? Then buy your electricity someplace else!

  • SaveEnergyMan Sep 27, 2012

Rogers is liar. He said many things about Johnson that several of my friends, who know and have worked with Johnson for years, say is absolute hogwash. I know several Duke employees who speak poorly of Rogers as well. He'll close up shop in Raleigh, as soon as it suits him. The Utilities Comm is a joke.

"Can hardly wait until our next ice storm to see this disaster unfold."

Yeah, or the next hurricane. If you thought power restoration after Fran and the December 2002 ice storm took an excessive amount of time, wait until the next one. We'll be lucky if power is restored in less than a month.

"Any well respected economist will tell you the changes in the US gas prices have been primarily due to market factors rather than US economic or energy policies."

I agree with that, however, not pursuing every ounce of domestic energy, and by the way get rid of the fuel mixes and methanol and easily enable the ability to build new refineries and the price can be lower here. Ethanol is a real killer as it lowers your MPG, makes your engine run hotter, plus as I understand puts out some nasty pollutants. Long ago we should have pursued obtaining all of our oil needs within North and South America. What is especially a degree of insanity now is ignoring coal. Most of the big coal producers have been forced to eliminate workers and unless we strike up some massive deals with China that trend will continue. So I hope everyone enjoys higher costs of everything because of decades of foolish energy decisions.

  • whatelseisnew Sep 27, 2012

"Where do you people get your news from? Oh, FOX News maybe? The President has nothing to do with the price of gas."

Yes he does. In obama's case he has stifled expansion of domestic supplies. On the Foreign policy side he has made things much worse in the Middle East and that enables people that trade in oil futures to use that as a means to drive up the price of oil. Electricity, Obama's policies are driving up the costs and over time those costs will show up on your bill. Dumb people of course will complain that the power companies are being guilty never making the connection between Government policies and the added costs that come with them. ObamaCare will even show up in your electric bill as well as in your insurance costs and actual health care costs. Keep in mind they want to increase Federal Fuel taxes, that is only actually necessary because of the theft of money from roads and bridges to buses and choo choo trains. Those vehicles should carry their own expenses or not e

Obama has already doubled gas prices.

Where do you people get your news from? Oh, FOX News maybe? The President has nothing to do with the price of gas.

I seem to remember Bush getting bashed by the MSM and liberals, when has prices went up during his time in office. A president can affect gas prices, by his admin policies.

And a Democrat will need to come in and fix everything!

Any CEO who is for Obama needs his judgement questioned. Obama hates big corperations-and CEOs-unless they give him lots of money.

This merger will not be good for NC and for Raleigh. The 2 companies have very different styles and proceedures. Progress made employees sign ethics agreements and take ethics training.
Jim Rogers would have already failed the ethics issue.

Be vigilant. Watch!! I think Duke Energy will have issues with regualtory boards when they want to raise rates.

  • RomneyRyan2012 Sep 27, 2012

"Rogers in July told thousands of Progress Energy employees that he wanted to earn their trust during the difficult transition.

The merger is expected to eliminate an estimated 1,860 jobs, including 700 to 1,000 Progress Energy workers in Raleigh, Duke spokesman Tom Williams said." Yep...that's how you earn their trust. Take away their jobs. Right...............

Improved since when? Yesterday? Look at the major headlines from WRAL this week.....almost all, if not all, were from AP.

  • computer trainer Sep 27, 2012

Rogers idea of long term and ours seems to be significantly DIFFERENT! Long term to him seems to be about 20 minutes. He is NOT to be trusted. I would NOT want to work for him.

  • They call me CATMAN Sep 27, 2012

We're committed to Raleigh. Committed has many different meanings you can commit to someone or you can commit someone which one is it Jim Rogers?

  • sinenomine Sep 27, 2012

Somebody posted a little while ago that WRAL news is a cut & paste operation.

I've lived in Raleigh half my life. WRAL isn't the best news operation I've ever seen but it's tolerable and, moreover, it's improved. I remember one slow news day in the early '80s when the headline story was a pink eye epidemic in Johnston County. The station sent its helicopter, whatever it was called, there to "investigate" and most of the video which accompanied the story was of the aircraft. It was embarrassing and the height of silliness. WRAL isn't like that anymore.

The main problem is the 24 hour news cycle, for which we can thank primarily CNN. Because of the incessant need for "breaking news" stories items which once would have gotten local or at best regional play now break nationally. That's why so much of what the talking heads say anymore is garbage. It also helps explain the abundance of re-run stories, what old-timers used to call "ABRAHAM LINCOLN STILL DEAD" headlines.

  • davidgnews Sep 27, 2012

WRAL hasn't mentioned anything about Ahmadinejad wanting a "New World Order". Offshore

It was on their front page a day or two ago. You seem to be more interested in bashing WRAL than paying attention, but at least you aren't the only one.

Given Rogers' statements and conduct prior to and immediately after the merger it is clear that he is unacquainted with any truth-telling ability. You are more likely to get the facts from a member of Congress a week before an election. He can make all the speeches he wants, I'm not listening.
