A few years ago, someone with (I believe) WRAL physically put their hands on DWI cases in Johnston County, and determined there were shady practices. Why doesn't someone try their luck here in Wake County? I have a few leads you can start with.

  • john26 Mar 1, 10:10 a.m.

They really should have the SBI (along with the Bar) investigate the DA's office and the Wake County Courts in general.

I think somebody would have a heart attack if they could get the big picture of what's going on in that joint.

  • cutl00senc Feb 29, 2:59 p.m.

Just more fuel for the fire that confirms that the DWI laws in this country arent meant to save lives, just to rake in the dough for the lawyers, judges, prosecutors, and the county treasures office. You want to save lives, put alcohol breathalyzer ignition kill switches on all vehicles. Nah..think of all the money that would save Americans, think of all the lost revenues.... and the insurance premium savings....its about money people....not saving lives!

What a barbaric, pathetic, hateful thing to say. Shows your intellect. Oh by the way, my brother was killed by a tractor trailor when I was 13. I guess that would bring a smile to your face too, knowing your so concerned about other people.

Crouch is a bad bad bad bad lawyer. His bow tie's won't help him now. He has been doing this way too long. I was convicted of DUI in the fall. I hired a better lawyer John McWilliams and my friend's hired Crouch. Crouch told them that he has done this SEVERAL TIMES. He also said the exact same thing about the cops. Another one of my friends got a DUI and hired crouch (yes three of us all 18 with DUI's). Crouch did the same thing with his case. It allowed them both to still be driving since the case's original conviction. I have been very skeptic there cases since. Well I was right that Wake County Courthouse is Corrupt! I however did not want to appeal to Superior court and got my sentence over with and completed the one year suspension sentence.. But all Three of us were sentenced by this judge last fall. Judge Ruth is considerate and I wouldn't of wanted any other judge. She was extremely nice to my family. I want to know if they will be reviewing all her cases? Well this effect all

Love comments: are you okay with a drunk driver slamming into your wife one day because judge let him/her off. Middle of the Road is correct. People that drink & drive to the point that they're out of it enough to hit your wife are not going to pay attention to the fact they shouldn't drive. They are going to do it anyway. Fact that people assume DWI's issued are to people that are toasted off their behinds. How about the speeder that slams into your wife. He/she as done it before and what a ticket, or texter or cell phone user. None which has a drivers license taken away. You're so worried about those DWI's slaming into you. Out law drinking period. Don't say you can drink just not to much. I don't agree with out lawing it but believe in laws making sense. How many sporting events in this state have DWI arrest when they let out. ZERO. You know why? Not because there is none. It is because the state likes the money they make off events. It is about revenue not protecting the people.

  • d4deirdre Feb 28, 6:53 p.m.

The investigation should also include all the child support cases Judge Ruth presided over. There has been many times Judge Ruth has overlooked requiring the deadbeat dad involved in my child support case to walk away without paying anything and just continue to add his delinquent amount to arrears. Even decreasing the past due amount for no cause. I finally filed a formal complaint against Judge Ruth when she reduced his child support payment without the deadbeat dad even filing a motion for a decrease. Thanks to Judge Ruth even with the unjustifiable reductions the deadbeat dad is still currently past due in the amount of $19,697.95.

Do you think people have to have their license to drive drunk? This will rock your narrow little world, but people without their license drive drunk all the time.

  • krankyroo Feb 28, 12:14 p.m.

I think it is wrong to assume that all that are commenting have been in court for a criminal offense or for child support. I for one, have been in court for neither...just worked in or near the courthouse for 5+ years. I saw it all first hand. NOT because I had broken the law. No one has had the courage to speak out against this judge, but like I have said previously, this has been going on for YEARS! And I also said that she has done shady things on behalf of plaintiffs AND on behalf of defendants. There are many things that should have been reported to the judicial standards committee a long time ago. The only reason the potential violations have not been reported is because persons who might provide the information would have their jobs placed in jeopardy. Nothing is ever COMPLETELY anonymous.

I've been to her court and sat and waited hours (with a full court room) for her to return from a birthday party. I've also waited in the same court because she cancelled the court session and never told anyone including the clerk about it. I've documented multiple times where she just "winged" the law instead of practicing it depending on her mood. If she hasn't done anything wrong it would amaze me.

+++Why does someone not stop these judges when they try to make up their own laws? Does the system not have enough checks and balances to keep them honest and force them to follow the rules. NotFromHere

Actually when any attorney has the "courage to confront" a judge about any "mistakes and/or errors that were made in any case"...the judge who in charge normally just makes light of judges making mistakes....they are not going to condemn another judge for this....regardless of what is "legal and lawful"...I have heard this with my own ears...so it is not hearsay....

The smoke here is coming from DA Willoughby & Judge Donald Stephens, both of whom are artful politicians. What we know is that DA Willoughby & Judge Stephens have complained about Judge Ruth. What we don't know is whether Judge Ruth did anything wrong to deserve their complaints. Maybe Judge Ruth ruled in favor of the person accused of a crime rather than in favor of the prosecution. There might be no fire at all, just smoke.

bubbba, you posted the following at 6:57 PM on 02/27/2012:

"Please know that all is not what it appears to be in family/child support court in Wake County. It is NOT fair to either side and hasn't been for years. And yes, it is at the hands of this particular judge."

I think that one (though perhaps not necessarily the only) interpretation of this post is that you have been in child support court before Judge Ruth. If I surmised incorrectly then I apologize for my error.

You responded to my earlier post in part but not to the portion having to do with your prior record, etc. Of course you don't have to post any response to my rhetorical questions, but I (and perhaps others) would be curious.

While we're at it, what does your not being "cute and young" (re your post of 10:16 AM 02/28/2012) have to do with anything? Are you trying to level some new charge against Judge Ruth?

  • NotFromHere Feb 28, 10:26 a.m.

The judges in our state overstep their authority all the time such as Judge Ruth giving temporary driving priviledges when that is not in her power to do. Why does someone not stop these judges when they try to make up their own laws? Does the system not have enough checks and balances to keep them honest and force them to follow the rules. I spent 20 years working in foster care and constantly found judges making rulings that were outside the scope of the case. If you bring your concerns forward they can be very vindictive next time you're in their court.

  • Rebelyell55 Feb 28, 10:21 a.m.

There is no surprises here, this has been going on since the start of our Judicial system. Just easier to get caught at it or told on.

Learn to read. I have posted nothing on child support and have never been before any judge regarding child support. The facts in my case are as stated. I admitted to Ruth that I was taking Paxil as prescribed and my pills were counted to support my correct dosage. The police speculated I had smoked pot. I had not. I was giving a walk test in the ditch on 64 at a busy intersection. The cop said since he could do it, he thought I should too.
I passed the other two walk test. I failed one eye test facing the south with sun in my eyes. I passed the other two. I wasnt her flavor of the day. I am not cute and young. As far as being biased, your are right about that.

  • sinenomine Feb 28, 10:15 a.m.

It would be enlightening if GOLO were to require that everyone posting a comment critical of the judicial system were required to provide a link to a certified copy of his/her criminal history. THAT would make interesting reading!

I am reminded of the joke about the lawyer and the tipsy person at a cocktail party. The intoxicated person clearly despised lawyers. "Is there no person so despicable" they demanded of the attorney "no crime so heinous that you wouldn't stoop to represent them?"

To which the lawyer responded "I don't know; what are you charged with?"

The problem with the entire judiciary is the amount of discretion juges have. They needed wide discretion in years pst because of the lack of rapid communication. However communication is not a problem in the 21 first century. it is time our general assembly performed their duties and curb this limitless power that judges currently have. Whether it is a judge that takes a mothers children because she has cancer or a judge that does not acknowledge the branches of government or a judge that ignores the D.A. Judges are not held accountable and until they are the public will have confidence in our judicial system.

  • sinenomine Feb 28, 9:50 a.m.

bubbba, you have posted at least three times on this story. Your postings reveal that you have been before Judge Ruth in child support court and also in traffic court, on a DWI. You say you were found guilty on the latter.

You are not exactly an unbiased witness.

You said you blew a .00 and had no blood test but were taking Paxil. The police, you said, thought at first you were using marijuana.

You tell us what the evidence wasn't in your case; why don't you tell us what it was? Why did the officer stop you in the first place? Was there an accident? You do understand, do you not, that the impairing substance need not be alcohol - it can be a medication, including a prescription medicine.

I would also ask you what else you have been convicted of, if anything, whether you are currently on probation or parole, and how many times you have been in court overall, including for charges which may have been dismissed.
