The manufacturers are regulated too tightly, production halted by FDA (aka our government regulators). Medications are being manufactured out of our country because of the red tape OUR country has put on our companies. There are about 180+ meds on short supply for various reasons-mostly for increase demand and manufacturing delay from FDA inspections. The government (republicans and democrats-BOTH) are the blame for this. GREEDY politicians...period...nothing more. Our politicians changed from public servants to SELF SERVANTS!! Corruption knows no politcal boundaries. They only care if it affects one of them. My prayers to this child and all those that suffer needlessly from a created(fictional) drug shortages.

what ever happened to the Orphan Drug Act????

  • Killian Feb 20, 2:58 p.m.

My friend's cousin is dealing with this as well. See her latest blog post here: http://gideonschripsema.blogspot.com/ to see how you can protest this travesty. These kids' lives should not be bought and sold so some pharmaceutical exec can take his kids to St Barts for the weekend.

    This is heart breaking.

cwbauer55's comment is filled with kindness. I hope the medication shortage will be remedied so that all who need it have access, but thanks for the kind words on prioritizing a child's well-being.

Who knows what the real reasons are why this child is looking at not having all he needs to have achance at a full recovery.... What I do know! This is the face of the new America if certain Republicans get there way. If you do not have the money, so what. Ask your neighbors for the money. Smaller goverment, less inspectors.... The new American way. If you can not make a profit that you like on what you are making stop and make something else.... Wakeup folks it is all connected!

Glad to see someone out there recognizes what the republicans are up to. I keep saying that they don't care about us the working class Americans , all they want are two classes of people. The rich and the poor. I truly do hope people wake up before that happens.

I feel so bad that these people can't get the medicine that they need.

cwbauer55 - how many others do you think would sacrifice the way are willing to in order for these children to get the meds? Is there a way we can start a support group or something to get the cause out for doing this? I hate to know you would be in so much pain - but I think a lot of people - like you, would rather see it going to that 5 year old even at their own sacrifice.

The company that stopped manufacture of methotrexate, Ben Venue Labs, in Ohio, stopped manufacture due to FDA concerns found at an inspection at their facility. I don't know the details of the issues FDA found, but this may have been a case where FDA needed to work with the manufacturer to try and maintain production (with increased oversight?). It takes at least a couple years to get an approval for a generic so it isn't easy to get a new manufacturer to market quickly.

I ALSO TAKE METHOTREXATE FOR MY RA I CAN LIVE WITH PAIN SO SAVE THE MEDS FOR THE KIDS WHO NEED IT FOR THE CANCER TREATMENTS ILL FIND SOMTHING ELSE FOR THE PAIN. KIDS NEED TO TOO HAVE A LONG LIFE.

This Country needs to get use to this, as the medical field is taken over by the governmant more and more supplies will not be available. No company will produce medical supplies or medicines if they can't pay fair wages to their employees and still make a profit. I seen this a lot of this in countries with socialized medicine. So get over it. By the way the rich and Governement ofiicials get all the care they want.

I am watching this story very closely. I have severe rheumatoid disease (formerly called rheumatoid arthritis) That is being treated methotrexate as well. If I should lose my methotrexate, I can barely move. The alternatives either do not work as effectively, or they have side effects that I can not tolerate.

I sure hope he is cancer free and not just in remission. And get the drugs back into the system what good is health insurance if the drug you need is not available. Tylenol has been availble for over 40 years but I can walk into almost any store in the country and buy it

  • itsmyownopinion Feb 14, 7:21 p.m.

That's terrible. My daughter was on that drug. I had no idea about this.

  • mfarmer1 Feb 14, 7:09 p.m.

This is where the FDA should be involved with keeping the supply available.

  • taeleen1 Feb 14, 6:57 p.m.

mep, it's really a good theory, but the problem with extending the patents is that in this case the drug Methotrexate is over 20 years old, it is ancient as far as medicine is concerned, but remains to be the best treatment option for kids with Leukemia due to the lack of funding for research into childhood cancer. Only 2 drugs have been approved by the FDA in the last 20 years specifically for childhood cancer, most drugs used in the treatment of childhood cancer are over 25 years old. I do sympathise with your mother, and I will pray that these drug companies will stop worrying about being richer than they already are, don't let them fool you, they make money off these drugs, just not the ridiculous amount that they want to! many blessing mep, to you and your mother!

    Ahh! Capitalism at work!

  • affirmativediversity Feb 14, 6:53 p.m.

Call me silly but this story doesn't make any sense.

The drug company closed down their plant because there was too much demand for their product that they were undercharging for so now there is a shortage?

Wouldn't the common sense solution have been to keep the plant open and charge a bit more for it?

How much do you want to bet that the plant closed here in the USA but will be reopened in China or India?

  • mep Feb 14, 6:07 p.m.

Thats too bad... perhaps allowing the big pharma companies to keep there patents longer, thus profit margins higher would help. But if no one can supply the demand because of the low generic cost... there is a golden opportunity for some company to not only make money, but meet a serious need here by making more of the generic stuff. My mothers diabetic drug stopped manufacturing a couple of years ago. The replacement drug is more expensive and does not work as well for her. Praying for both to find a company willing to meet a need.
