It just amazes me at the shape our school system is in this day and time. I just sit and shake my head when I hear things like this. I wonder sometimes will it ever get any better?!?! Or are those days loooong gone??? com_mon_sent I'm afraid those days are long gone, along with common sense and being concerned with giving the children a good education. More thought is going into being PC than just educating the children.

Placing 6th graders back will cause overcrowding in the elementary school. Freshman academies have a history of being very successful. However, they are normally right next to the base high school.

Why not just make middle school 7th, 8th, & 9th and put the 6th graders back in the elementary schools where they belong. Oh wait...sorry this is Wake County where common sense doesn't prevail at all.

Prior to my retirement from the public school system, we had the freshmen segregated from the upper classmen. Thinking is that isolating them from the influences of the upper classmen would give the freshmen a chance to adjust to high school with less pressure and aggrivation. They have all freshmen classes, they have freshmen seminars, they have all freshmen counselors and all freshmen support system. The idea being that if a student can be successful in 9th grade it is more likely that they will finish out their high school career. The distance noted here is questionable--but the concept is good.

Having the 9th grade center 20 minutes away in the middle of an industrial area is absurd. Many 9th students need to be transported to the Panther Creek High School main location each day for AP, honor, and speciality classes. Many students will need to be transported after school for sports and other activities after school. The 20 minute commute means that they miss the beginning of practice or whatever activity they are involved with. Of course all the commuters will now need to pay the 540 toll.

Most 9th grade centers are within 2 miles and 5 minutes travel time of the primary high school location.

My only question is which relative of a school board member owns the Morrisville office building near the airport that these 9th graders are being dumped in.
