My condolences go out to the family & the person that struck & killed Melissa. WE don't know what was going on in the driver's mind, and to my recollection at 7:15 on New Year's Day it was raining, would have been dark, and the shine off of the road would lend to reflections. Let's just suppose for one moment that the driver was momentarily distracted and thought they hit some debris and didn't see her...is that possible? Or perhaps upon impact the driver went into shock? Going into shock happens often upon impact in serious car accidents. RPD hardly enforces traffic period. It seems we've had a lot of hit & runs as of late, and people are still speeding 10-15 miles over the speed limit. We need traffic enforced because it has become very dangerous, period. And whether or not folks think our judicial system works, it is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. This is not to take away from the loss or grief of the family, I just hope folks are capable of keeping an open mind

Sorry for the lost what the city needs to do is like other major cities install overhead camera from the police head quarter and make them work harder than they're and see thing going on around on this road yes at time south saunders do get dark and a lot of brushes need to be clear near the area on the left near mayview and the quality mark shell gas station and I don't blame the family, hold the city accountable and the driver who done the damage to this victims family lost. I'm so sick that people jus don't have an conscience heart and slow down when people walking on biclycles and so forth but want to enact so much on young drivers who have reckless accident dang make them faceup more for fleeing hit and funs so stuff- rest in peace ms t. Johnson my prayers are with your family

Its kind of hard when I am on here trying to help the family and you are just antagonizing other people...

  • pirate09 Jan 5, 2012

Just a heads up for anyone who would like to help the family out with the funeral/burial expenses. The service is being held tomorrow and until the help from the state comes the family really doesnt have a ton of money for these expenses.

If you would like to help they are taking donations...you can contribute to the Melissa Sue Johnson Fund at State Employees Credit Union. Thanks!

i saw the story where they said the truck could be a Chevrolet Colorado and on my way home i saw the same exact looking truck (no front end damage) but it was a Isuzu I290. they look identical i googled em.

Unfortunately, I had a child run out in front of me while driving. It didn't sound loud, it was a thump. However, I did stop & I noticed the child in the street. Thank GOD he was okay. Maybe the person didn't realize they hit her, thought it was a stray animal or thought it was debris. My heart goes out to the family. I pray that the person surrenders. I hope the person wasn't texting & driving. My condolences to her family.

About half your posts have been commenting on other posters, so I guess you aren't following that rule, right?

thanks ritamccoy.. i was woundering we were so close in school and lost touch a few years ago. please post if you find out any of the arrangements. thank you so much god bless. r u close to the family?

  • ritamccoy Jan 3, 2012

Someone had asked in a comment if Melissa was married or had children. She was single and didn't not have any children. Her family is going through alot of pain right now. The arrangements have not yet been made but they are meeting with the funeral director today.

  • ritamccoy Jan 3, 2012

To Bless Your Heart Bev, I do have Jesus in my life and he and I know that. Seems you are judging me. Regardless of whose fault it was that my cousin died, there is no excuse for leaving the scene after you hit someone. If you have nothing to hide, you stop when you hit a pedestrian. I pray for you.

  • dellajohnson2007 Jan 3, 2012

please lets all remember the family. she was such a good person and close friend of mine. if anyone knows about the funeral arrangements please let me know. i cant find anything when it will be. michelle if you hear anything please let meknow.

  • hedgy_one Jan 3, 2012

I still live in the neighborhood. The light stopping traffic on S. Saunders is definitely not long enough. That's probably why she was "trapped" on the median and was trying to cross from there! My condolences and prayers to the Johnson family. I hope the driver who hit her will be found.

  • John Sawtooth Jan 3, 2012

So sad, there is no real closure in a violent vehicle homicide like this. It's never fixed, and "justice" is a rather pale solution even when it works out.

  • bill0 Jan 3, 2012

pirate09 - another eye witness posted earlier that she was in the median and trying to cross half way when hit. And frankly, if you don't want to read people's comments - maybe you should try reading something other than the Comments Section.

If you want to come on here just to harp on every word I said then please go elsewhere, you have no clue what happend, how fast he was going and if she was crossing at the right time...have some sympathy and stop coming on here just to comment on something you know nothing about.

  • daknmak Jan 3, 2012

RIP Melissa! My sympathy to the family and my prayers that this guy/girl is brought to justice. I grew up in this area on gilbert ave and throughout the years I was there I recall numerous hit and runs on s. Saunders st. As for u people saying she was jaywalking there isn't NO pedestrian crosswalks there and 9x's out of ten at night drivers fail to stop at the lights when they see there is no other vehicle at the light. Regardless of any of this the driver murdered this young woman and needs to be brought to justice and I believe with the media and the RPD and all of our tactical units this person will be found. Condolences to Melissas family and friends.

An article about a tragic hit & run should not be the backdrop used as a lauching pad for whining about whatever wrong you think happened to you. Pathetic.

  • loflinbecky Jan 3, 2012

To the parents of this lady, you have my heartfelt sympathy on the loss of your daughter. There is no pain as horrific as the loss of a child. Don't give up on finding the person who killed your daughter. There are so many injustices that surround us everyday and in a lot of different settings. People who cause harm and pain to others should be held accountable. I wish you peace and comfort as you try to live your life without your daughter

"The guy was doing 50-60mph, there was absolutely NO reason for him to be going that fast"

First, condolences to the victims family and friends.

However, the speed limit on this road is 45 mph. Pedestrians certainly can't judge car speed accurately from the sidewalk, but even if he was doing 50mph, that would be 5 over the limit. Yes, that would still be speeding, but it is something we've all done. The criminal part was that he didn't stop (or apparently even slow down.)

As for the jaywalking portion - the eye witnesses seem to indicate that she wasn't crossing with the light. That doesn't mean she deserved to die, but it is caution to all people to very careful when crossing a busy street. You can't count on a driver seeing you and stopping in time. This is especially true at night.

  • pirate09 Jan 3, 2012

    Since it cut me off...

    s. To all of you with your stupid political hooha, just hush. If you want to talk politics go elsewhere because you are helping no one in this situation!

  • pirate09 Jan 3, 2012

To all of you heartless people on here worrying more about fault than praying for her family, shame on you. I hope you NEVER have to experience what this family is going through right now. Did you read Grants comments and account of the story? The guy was doing 50-60mph, there was absolutely NO reason for him to be going that fast, and to not even hit the breaks when you see someone walking out in front of you? I wouldve not only hit my breaks but swerved to miss her, because no way in this lifetime could I EVER have something like that on my conscience, that I ddint even try to not take away this poor girls life.

Also for everyone who keeps blaming Melissa, who are you to say what happend when you werent there. You have no idea if she had the signal, if she was jaywalking...so hush! No matter what the driver was and will be 100% at fault and I hope he fries. Her brother is like a brother to me (and might as well be my brother)and to see him in so much pain just brings me to tear

  • Shandiggie1976 Jan 2, 2012

why are ya'll bickering? This lady is dead!! Prayers go out to her family

  • sinenomine Jan 2, 2012

dollibug, your comment of 5:27 p.m. 01/02/2012 quoting me is either an obtuse attempt at very wry sarcasm or is a totally inaccurate statement of the law, I can't tell which. I hope it is sarcasm because at least then it could at least be interpreted as being somewhat amusing instead of just inane.

  • sweetshell028 Jan 2, 2012

No I dont think she had kids but I talked to her last a few years ago and she was going to get married not sure if that happened. Her sister said she was doing really good. How is Amanda? I am so sorry for the family, my prayers goes out to all of you!

  • sweetshell028 Jan 2, 2012

I was one also her bestfriends in high school and am so shocked and can not believe that the next time I would see her would be on the news. dollibug,

Your thinking of the law in some foreign countries, where you have to prove your innocence.

Our Founding Fathers knew better and that is why we have trial by Jury and everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court by a jury, or if defendant waives the jury trial, by the judge. -james27613

LMAO. Brainwashed. Americans who have no worldly experience are lead to believe that this is the most free country of all. I think most if it has to do with how uneducated the US is. People believe what they are told. The law as written says you are innocent until proven guilty, but do you honestly believe it?

  • iokiecdi Jan 2, 2012

How is it that the family finds her cell phone at the scene and the cops don't???

  • fayelcox Jan 2, 2012

Let's all keep our negative thoughts and remarks to ourselves Let God take care of the one who was driving the truck or whatever that hit MELISSA.

That "innocent until proven guilty" junk wouldn't be junk, I would guess, if it applied to you, robprince89.

Excuse me?????? There is no "innocent until proven guilty"
It is just the opposite....it is "guilty until proven innocent"....this is actually how it has been for a very longgggg time....and so many "innocent people are sent to prison for crimes that they did not do....while the guilty roam free....

  • dollibug Jan 2, 2012

My prayers are for the family of the deceased. You do not deserve to see the comments like those from ritamccoy.

  • robjustrob Jan 2, 2012

Yes, maybe the law has to catch up with the times here. There are too many reasons to decide to flee the scene. If you were flying straight up, no alcohol, no texting, no bags of crack in the car and legal citizenship, you would have more reason to see it as the true accident that it could've been and you would stop to aid the victim and cooperate with police. If a perp runs after striking a pedestrian, it should be assumed there is reason enough not to want to be caught. And once caught, the law should prosecute vigorously as if he/she had stayed at the scene, intoxicated, with illegal drugs in the car, illegal weapons, stolen goods, no license, four bald tires, a dozen illegal aliens in the trunk and an a partridge in a pear tree.

  • Parah Salin Jan 2, 2012

    LMAO @ ritamccoy.

I will pray for you. You need it to be that judgemental and superior.

  • robprince89 Jan 2, 2012

A young woman has lost her life. Whether her mistake or not: the driver has now committed a crime. So do not use the 'innocent until proven guilty' junk. God be with her family.

  • PanthersFan45 Jan 2, 2012

I have the same speculations as many other posters on here so I won't add anyyhing else to whats been said. I just don't understand a person not stopping after running someone over. Most likely what everyone said on here is true ..... he/she was probably headed for jail if they had stopped. Still its just heartless to leave someone to die after hitting them,

  • warbirdlover Jan 2, 2012

Hummmm.....lemme see.....this driver was probably doing one of two things.....using a cell phone or driving drunk.

    My money's on the alcohol.

You forgot one???? Illegal Alien with no drivers license or insurance!!!!!!

  • krystalhocutt Jan 2, 2012

i was actually the first one to find melissa in the street lying there lifeless. i actually thought it was an animal turned around got out and man what a tragedy.. i jumped screamed hollared and cried cried cried. had to direct other people to go around so they wouldn't run over the poor baby by mistake . man nobody seen nothing come on yawl whoever please come forward... its a tragedy for me and i am not family.. cause i guess i was the first one to find her and call for help.. melissa i am sorry, but i thank god i found you i thank god for being nosey and turning around. may god bless the family and i pray they catch whoever did this to melissa.

  • IceCreamMan Jan 2, 2012

R Phil - I'm just using common sense. You might want to do the same. The most logical reasons for a driver to hit and run are they are either impaired or could be in trouble for another offense (illegal alien, uninsured driver, in violation of parole/probation, etc).

  • ritamccoy Jan 2, 2012

R Phil blah blah blah. I hope you never have to experience losing a child and if you do, I expect your feelings about our justice system will change. If our justice system was as fair to the victims as it is to the criminals, it would be correct. If our justice system was not so messed up, there would be no convicted and released child molesters walking the streets today praying on our kids. Since you didn't like what Ice Cream had to say, I would say you must be someone who probably likes to indulge and then drive.

  • ritamccoy Jan 2, 2012

Melissa is my first cousin's child. I ask that the Christians out there reading this story pray for her family. Losing a child is hard, no matter what the age of the child, you usually plan on dying first and never expect to bury your own child.

  • Mitt from Mexico Jan 2, 2012

"Here's how the story behind most hit and runs usually goes: [blah blah blah]" -Save It

"Great point, Save It. And that's the very likely scenario, too." -IceCreamMan

I pray that neither of you make it to a jury. Your assumptions make you very dangerous to the rule of justice.

  • Chloe93o Jan 2, 2012

    God be with her family.
