A "No sit down" policy? What are these people thinking?? Folks are entitled to breaks and lunch periods. Probably another case of corporate do more with less mentality. But these employees ARE entitled to their breaks etc.

  • kermit60 Oct 3, 2011

Typical high priced study. Spend lots of money, determine fault or problem, change nothing.

  • howdiditgettothis Sep 30, 2011

Sorry - but this goes on EVERYWHERE.

I work for a small business chain here in NC (150-ish stores) that teeters on the brink of going out of business.

Nepotism to the hilt. The four people running the district are all married (2 couples)....but were once married to other people within the company.

No chance of promotion unless you are part of either the "old boy" network (owners) or "family" (various affair couples) management clique.

    Yes, I have a job. Whoop-tee-do !

  • storchheim Sep 30, 2011

Ok, that's $100,000 down the tubes. Why didn't precious HR, with their MBAs, do something about this?

And unless the "plan" is: get names, get proof, then FIRE and do not transfer all offenders, nothing will change.

  • storchheim Sep 30, 2011

All over the university, balog? Try all over the State.

  • boneymaroney13 Sep 30, 2011

Well, you at least got a JOB don'cha? If you're not happy, go somewhere else.

  • Rebelyell55 Sep 30, 2011

Teaching spanish is not the answer. Teaching management skill and people skill maybe, but then that would make em smarter than their bosses....

  • Rebelyell55 Sep 30, 2011

Pass some laws like Al. did and then see how many is left being mis-treated. As alway, they are going to throw money at a problem thinking it'll go away. Typical...

  • djofraleigh Sep 30, 2011

Change the jobs to contracts and let those out of work or wanting better jobs bid on the jobs (make them by building) and let the existing workers have a first time edge in bidding.

  • wally1957 Sep 30, 2011

Not only is Holden Thorp trying to clean up the Football and Academics, he is trying to clean up the "Clean Up" staff as well. Wait til Oct. 28th, the clean-up staff might be working overtime. A lot of things are broke in the Hill.

  • Riddickfield Sep 30, 2011

    Private investigation!!!!1111

LOL! They just can't do anything right over there these days. Can't cheat well at football, bogus diploma mill majors, honor court that can't find the most obvious plagiarism, now they can't even clean up after themselves without getting into trouble.

  • truth9806 Sep 30, 2011

    WOW UNC NEEDS an overhaul!

  • mystica131 Sep 30, 2011

sophiemom-- I was there in the early '90s and there was a big deal about the housekeepers being mistreated then. I do not remember the specifics, but if there was one in the '70s too, good grief, this has been going on forever.

  • BubbaDuke Sep 30, 2011

If employees at ultra-liberal UNC-Chapel Hill feel they are being discriminated against, it's no surprise. With liberals, it's do-as-they-say, not do-as-they-do.

Furthermore, I'm fluent in two languages and doing pretty well with the third one, English. I could cook as head Chef in restaurants. I worked as an electrician in the US Navy. I have worked as Mechanic in garage. I also have worked as Carpenter. See, that is why I could stand on my own. I have absolutely no problem flipping Burgers in McDonald to support my family if that is the case. Just saying.

  • Da Toy Maker Sep 30, 2011

I own an small profitable IT Consulting business. Thank you very much. Never have to advertise in 9 years since I set it up.

As for my status, I immigrated to the US 30 years ago. I'm a naturalized US Citizen who served 10 years in the US Navy. Have a 4 year degree in EE which I paid for all by myself while working three parttime jobs.. Had worked for fortune 500 companies. Never gotten any Government assistance. I've never not ever intended to hire any illegal workers. Just stating the fact here. I've worked with small business owners having the same view regarding the unskilled workers. And don't worry, you will never get my service since all my business are strictly through referral only. Be real, go out there and talk to small business who use unskilled labors and ask for their honest opinion. Don't think you will like the answer.

BTW, I made my own American Dream come true through hard work!

  • Da Toy Maker Sep 30, 2011

Talk to any Supervisory people and ask who they would rather have as workers: US Born or limited English speaking Foreign Born. I'm just stating the fact. It has a lot to do with Ethic & attitude.

  • affirmativediversity Sep 30, 2011

UNC has been hiring a higher than representative number of professors from China lately too and their command of the English language is extremely poor. Plus, they seem to come with a built in bigotry for white people.

Maybe UNC should look into that too...

  • sunshine1040 Sep 30, 2011

They are working at a college in NC a place of higher learning the students speak English the Prof speaks English the staff shold all be able to talk o each other .somebody please teach all Employees English so they can read what their job description is

  • Mark Hayes Sep 30, 2011

DaToyMaker." And a big round of applause for you in helping in the effort to get Americans,Real Americans back to work, not knowing what business your in I will make a habit of just not dealing with any that practice using your ethics, and my hopes are that you remain a very small, non growing business owner,as I wonder of your own right to be here.

  • affirmativediversity Sep 30, 2011

Legal Immigrants who know limited English could/are contributing to our country more than one thinks. Do you know that the Sponsor of the legal immigrant is responsible till they become US Citizen? per Da Toy Maker

The sponsor of a legal immigrant is only financially responsible for the first 5 years...that is when most legal immigrants become eligible for citizenship. If a legal immigrant chooses not to become a citizen then at the end of 10 years they must apply for a renewal of the Permanent Residence's Status and they do not require a sponsor to do that.

  • affirmativediversity Sep 30, 2011

"There is a high level of discontent about the hiring of non-speaking English employees, the consultants found."

How many mute employees does UNC have in its housekeeping department...and how do they know if they spoke it would be in English?

  • Da Toy Maker Sep 30, 2011

Wow. Do we really need to go far to see the treatment those people got:

    "Learn English or else".
"Just be glad to have a job and stop complaining".

Legal Immigrants who know limited English could/are contributing to our country more than one thinks. Do you know that the Sponsor of the legal immigrant is responsible till they become US Citizen? If a legal immigrant goes on Foodstamps, etc, the sponsor is responsible for the bill. As a small business owner myself, I'll hire a non-English speaking legal immigrant anytime than the US born high school (worse yet non-HS graduate) because of the work ethic. Just saying.

  • sophiemom Sep 30, 2011

@jjesusfreak01, are you talking about the housekeepers' fight back in the 1970s?

  • jjesusfreak01 Sep 30, 2011

These housekeepers really are being treated badly by management. A few years back they introduced a new system that calculates down to the second how long employees have to do each task, such as cleaning a sink. Additionally, more effective cleaning tools and chemicals were removed from their arsenal to use the "system" that the university contracts.

Tonya Sell is a Navy veteran and she thinks she's god. She treats the employees like a drill sergeant and refuses to listen to suggestions unless they come from above her head.

FYI: I'm a UNC grad and was involved with the housekeepers fight for rights my senior year. This has been going on far too long.

  • Rebelyell55 Sep 30, 2011

Let there be a mistake in their paycheck and you'll see right quick how well they speak english... Excuses and abuses are everywhere, I guess of them workers learn quicker than most think they do.

I am gainfully employed at the moment, but my gratitude does not give my manager the right to walk all over me.

No wonder your manager is all over you, if you are working why are you on the computer? There is your answer right there. The manager wants you to put out work and not play on the computer that is not involving housekeeping.

  • Rebelyell55 Sep 30, 2011

"believe they are treated unfairly and face retaliation from managers when they complain."
Sounds like they didn't really know until someone told em. Make ya wonder don't it....

  • wildcat Sep 30, 2011

but my gratitude does not give my manager the right to walk all over me.

If you are not happy with your job; then leave and find another. You will have to show proof of evidence or video of your manager acting in this manner. Just talking is not proof and you know that. Find another job. No job will satisfy you any way. You are just a complainer. Aren't you?

  • wildcat Sep 30, 2011

How much important work are YOU doing today, being able to comment on here?

Its my American right and WRAL gives me that right. Too bad you cannot make that call.

  • Lyle Sep 30, 2011

And there are no illegals working in these housekeeping roles in the UNC system. They are screened carefully. How much important work are YOU doing today, being able to comment on here?

  • Lyle Sep 30, 2011

Wow gobs of hate today. Wildcat, no one needs to prove anything to you. Also, many of these people ARE English speaking and truth be told, those that DON'T speak English are the hardest workers. The "American" citizens carry all the drama. They are performing an important function, are vetted, and still earn peanuts. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys. But I do know first-hand how they were/are disrespected. Please say your parents didn't teach you this brand of intolerance.

  • PhotoJ Sep 30, 2011

wildcat - a difficult economic/job climate still does not give management free reign to abuse workers. I am extremely grateful I am gainfully employed at the moment, but my gratitude does not give my manager the right to walk all over me.

  • fsck Sep 30, 2011

Heh, they had a meeting yesterday and they hired four interpeters to translate from enlish to the staff. America the melting pot used to mean we welcomed people from around the world so that they would come here and learn English and our way. Now, we invite them here so we conform to their way. All hail the tower of babel.

  • wildcat Sep 30, 2011

  • Desiderata Sep 30, 2011

Tell those who do not speak or read english to LEARN IT and they willl understand directions better...instead of us enabling them and they pretend they don't understand because of the language issue. THEN they will feel enpowered ! Besides, some do a poor job and don;t like it when called back to redo their work ( yep,, I see it first hand) One told me he did not was the floor of a room because he did not have the time.....LAZY!

  • wildcat Sep 30, 2011

Show some proof that management is abusive and unfair. Without the proof of evidence, whatever will certainly continue.

  • wildcat Sep 30, 2011

The complainers should really be THANKFUL that they even HAVE A JOB! So ungratful! There are plenty of UNEMPLOYED that would appreciate having YOUR JOB. Better rethink on that and stop the complaining.

  • Lyle Sep 30, 2011

I was a housekeeping manager at State a few years ago and the housekeepers were abused and treated like garbage from the upper management. I did not last as the damage had been done. I can totally empathize with those at UNC.

  • nobody1 Sep 30, 2011

balog, you got that right, I deal with this everyday, and many won't say because of retaliation.

  • dtd1961 Sep 30, 2011

    What? Not UN$ee.

  • balog Sep 30, 2011

*JUST* in housekeeping? All of those issues happens all over that university. Especially favoritism.
