Raesmom, you could probably get the same discount that AAA offers from RetailMeNot or Does BJ's have a travel agency? You might get a discount through them as a member.

Lol jdouglas I can totally see you taking off like a rocket in a tiny Fiat lol. We usually always opt for the compact or economy car since its just the three of us. Only once were we upgraded to a santa fe type of car which was not for a long drive to buffalo (unfortunately) but for a weekend trip to Greensboro for DH's birthday last year. Keeping my fingers crossed for something that is efficient with gas and not a gas guzzling SUV (you read my mind Faye) We do not have AAA :/ do they offer additional discounts? I have a BJ's card if that helps. I was going to but the tickets and DH said he was going to try to get the time off so his cut off date was today lol. I told him he had til 2pm to let me know if he was going to get off......he called me at 630am to give me the good news.......i coulda waited til 130pm lol

(continued) I did that the last time I had to rent a car to drive from Boston to the Cape because there were trouble with the buses. I ended up with the tiniest Fiat I had ever seen. I'm so used to driving an SUV that I felt really vulnerable around the big trucks, etc., until I really stepped on the gas. Boy, that little thing took off like a rocket! LOL It was a fun ride to the folks, but I don't think I could spend 12 hours in it.

ThomasG, I would definitely call the cable company to get a better rate! Our contract was expiring recently, and I called and right of the bat asked for the customer retention department. I played the "senior living on social security" card full blast and it worked. We are paying $5-10 a month less than last year for the same service.

Raesmom, you didn't book the airline tickets yet did you? Are they refundable?? Maybe Dollar can provide a range of vehicles that they might give you. Probably the bigger the rental lot, the more options will be available, too. Keep in mind that car rental rates can be negotiable as well, but you have to talk directly to the company for that. Try to get a coupon code -- Retailmenot, RentalCarMomma, Ebates? Another trick, provided you are willing to end up with a really tiny car, is to rent from the very smallest category they offer. Often, they will run out of that, and give you a larger car for the same price.

bb - thanks for posting the code!

raesmom1612 - That is wonderful news about DH going to NY with you!! The car rental sounds like a good deal as long as you don't get stuck with a gas guzzling SUV or pick-up truck. Are there any guarantees you won't get a car that gets 15 MPG vs a compact that gets 30+ MPG. You'll lose any savings on gas if you have to drive a gas guzzler to NY. Do you have AAA?

Thanks for the second swagcode BB!!

On a different note remember allllll the work WE (well mostly yall) did helping me find reasonably priced plane tickets??? Well DH got word today that he is off for Thanksgiving so guess who's driving home??? That's right the Smith's!! All that to say I found what I think is a great deal from Dollar rent a car. Its called the "lock low and go" promo where they get to pick your car for you and you pay a lower rate then if you were to reserve a specific car and an even lower rate if you pay upfront. Has anyone ever done this or have any comments/insight on it? The "lock low and go" rate was $140 upfront and an additional $40 the day of pick up for any compact car or above, versus $220 for a "for sure" compact car. I couldn't pass it up. Thoughts?

LAXMom12 - the older gentleman I used years ago has retired and I have not found a new one since. Maybe Garner TV and Appliance can recommend someone.

Trickat - I bought our last one from the Original Mattress Factory and was very pleased with the price, quality and service.
