djoyner636: They sell mason jars at Dollar General fairly cheap and you can use a $5 off $25 on a Saturday.

djoyner636- I saw some left at the LF on Capital. When the 40% hits (is it Friday?), it might be a good time to swing by. And fun idea! I had to buy some for a group blog event on desserts in jars a few weeks back, and am enjoying using the ones I have left for toothbrush/toothpaste holders. So easy to just stick in the dishwasher to clean!

I forgot who posted it but someone was wondering if there are deals for ground beef. Compare Foods has family packs for $1.99/lb. Their 2 stores are in Clayton and Zebulon.

Anyone know where I can get cheap mason jars. Want to make my own soap dispensers.

Kathy, I am so sorry to hear of your situation and I will think of anything I can do to help. Here is some information on a care calender, this is great! http://www.carecalendar.org/ This is a calender you set up and people pick a time and date to either come and visit or bring a meal, We did this for one of my friends and it was completely confidential the only thing we all can view was what meal you were going to bring for that day, you can set up breakfast, lunch, dinner, and visits. Also, for anybody who wanted to help, but may be far away, she picked a few restaurants that she liked and we ordered pizza for her and her family. I hope this helps, and it looks like you have tons of support from family and others.

Thanks for the advice and kind words, it really helps. Fred does have insurance through his pension, Thank God for that. We saw the surgeon earlier today and he has a tumor in his left lung. They think they caught it early. The surgery is scheduled for 9/12. Our future son-in-law was offered a job nearby and they will be moving here. Also our son Ian is coming down to move in to help. Our kids have offered to help us out so with some luck we can weather this. As long as the cancer hasn't spread there will be no need for chemo. Fred may still be oxygen dependent and might qualify for disability. I'm still trying to process everything the surgeon said. It's a little daunting to hear words like tumor, stage 1 or 2 cancer and see the scan results in front of you. I can thank you all enough for the ideas. I'm going to look into a few of them as soon as I can think clearly. A separate post will be fine and not just for us, for anyone who is facing some serious issues. God Bless you all

    Kath

Sorry - it did not copy correctly on the wheelchairs:
Easter Seals, the American Cancer Society and other helpful organizations provide free wheelchairs and other medical related equipment, like walkers, commodes, bathtub rails, bathtub chairs, crutches, transfer benches, electric wheelchairs and scooters, on a short- or long-term basis. Some programs require deposits that are completely refundable. Check with your local office of Easter Seals and the American Cancer Society. You can also contact your state Department of Health.

Kathy - Hospitals have what they call "charity care" where they write off hospital bills for those who can't pay. Tell them your situation. Hospitals and doctors will set up payment plans too.

Go to the Church food pantrys. I'm not sure what area you are in...if you post it...people can tell you which churches have a food pantry.

Don't do this alone! Reach out.

Just last week or the week before on WRAL there was a lady in Creedmoor who was waiting on the new State system for assistance. She had no food. There was a follow up story...and she had a stocked refrigerator. People will help.

There is a business in my home town that has struggled through this economy. Virtually all of the downtown businesses have closed. This business has been run by the same family for over 60 years. They need to install a $2400 fire extinguisher system and don't have the money. The people of my hometown (and far away)...are showing this family how much we care by donating.
