DURHAM, N.C. — Police arrested a suspect in a kidnapping and sexual assault at a homeless shelter on Liberty Street around noon Friday.

Vonzell Speight, 42, of no known address, faces charges of first-degree sexual assault, second-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon, communicating threats and assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said the charges stem from a sexual assault inside an apartment along Dacian Avenue early Thursday.

A woman told police that she woke up and saw a man inside her room around 4:40 a.m. The man, who was armed with a knife, sexually assaulted her and took her wallet and jewelry.

Investigators believe he entered the victim’s apartment through a back door.
