Sex Offender Charged in Pittsboro Rape

Chatham County deputies arrested a registered sex offender Monday for a rape that allegedly occurred in Pittsboro earlier in April.

PITTSBORO, N.C. — Chatham County deputies arrested a registered sex offender Monday for a rape that allegedly occurred in Pittsboro earlier in April.

Stephen Eric Snipes, 48, of 3528 Teague Farm Road, Seagrove in Randolph County, faces one charge of second-degree rape. Sgts. Daniel Tilley and Mike Williams conducted the investigation and made the arrest.

The victim said the rape happened in the area of Hadley Mill Road on April 9. Snipes was an acquaintance of the victim, deputies said.

Snipes was convicted of first-degree rape in Philadelphia in September 1981. He registered with the North Carolina sex offender registry in October 2002.

Snipes was also found guilty on a rape charge in Randolph in November 1977. He was released from prison in August 1980.
