— Chatham County deputies arrested a registered sex offender Monday for a rape that allegedly occurred in Pittsboro earlier in April.

Stephen Eric Snipes, 48, of 3528 Teague Farm Road, Seagrove in Randolph County, faces one charge of second-degree rape. Sgts. Daniel Tilley and Mike Williams conducted the investigation and made the arrest.

The victim said the rape happened in the area of Hadley Mill Road on April 9. Snipes was an acquaintance of the victim, deputies said.

Snipes was convicted of first-degree rape in Philadelphia in September 1981. He registered with the North Carolina sex offender registry in October 2002.

Snipes was also found guilty on a rape charge in Randolph in November 1977. He was released from prison in August 1980.

Rape is not mainly about sex. It is about violence. If you "neuter" the rapist, you are not preventing future rapes. There are many sex offenders who rape their victims with objects, not with their sex organs. They also beat them and abuse them in other ways. No, castration is not the answer. Unfortunately, I don't know what the answer IS, but I know neutering the rapist is definitely not a viable one.

Hmmmm it sounds like sympathetic relativism has been infiltrating in the court system in which let him go. How do we know it is relativism?

Because in this case it was relativism that let him out. It is defined as ... any theory holding that criteria of judgment are relative, varying with individuals and their environments.

Guess what? We knew after the first time this person was a predator. We knew REALLY after the second time this person was a predator. Now that we REALLY REALLY know after the Third time that he is a predator - off to the hoosgow forever.

Folks - we can no longer tolerate this kind of thinking. Morals do not change - laws do not change - the fact of the matter is that anyone who thought that the criminal justice system after 100 years has changed is simply moronic. When they commit crimes like this the second time - you CANNOT SAY THAT THEY ARE REFORMED... and they should face life in prison.

This guy should have never been on the streets in the first place. He is very dangerous to society. This time, I pray that he will never hurt another female again because he should get a habitual sentence which could lead to 20 plus years. Praying for the victims.

Not likely that our justice system will neuter someone. Pedophiles get off pretty easy because society doesn't view it as bad as other crimes. I think Oprah made this one of her hot button issues since punishment is so lax. The entire sex offender registry is a joke. Apparently, someone figured it was better than nothing. But it's just stupid to think that locking someone up is going to change their behavior especially when jail is so nice. And they can't make jail any less nice because it's too expensive to hire enough guards to deal with outraged inmates. When it comes to money and security. security always takes a back seat. No one is really here to protect you. So take a lesson and arm yourself.

Here we go again. How many months of probation will he get this time? Justice has not been served if this guy ever walks free again. If you want to "cut it off", the only way to do that and make it work is to cut off his O2.

Two strikes and they let him out of jail. What did they think that the bars would heal him in some way.

This guy is a predator, and like the big cats in the zoo, he should be caged for life.

    Praying for his victims.

    God bless.

Some criminals do not need to be out on parole. I hope he will now get life in prison. Evidently the victim was unaware of his criminal life style.
