Sex offender charged in Mebane burglary

Posted September 9, 2010

— A registered sex offender from Durham County who was charged Monday in a weekend home invasion in Person County was charged Thursday in a Mebane burglary.

Alfred Douala Mangabell, 29, of 1815 Vale St. in Durham, was charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree kidnapping and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the June 11 residential break-in in Mebane.

A homeowner told Mebane police that an armed man broke into his home and stole a computer, a watch and cash before fleeing. The homeowner provided a description of the robber to police and noted that he had a foreign accent.

Mangabell, who also uses the name Alfred Manga Bell, is originally from Africa.

Person County authorities arrested him Monday on charges of first-degree burglary with forced entry, kidnapping and two counts of aggravated assault with sexual intent.

Those charges stem from a Sunday morning incident in Timberlake in which an armed man broke into a home and demanded money. When the two women inside said they had none, authorities said, he forced them to engage in sex acts while he photographed them.

Items seized from a search of Mangabell's home in the Person County case linked him to the Mebane burglary, police said.

Mangabell is being held in the Person County jail under a $1 million bond.

I just hope and pray that justice is served this time. This "man" needs to be sent to Mcneil island (sex offender island). He's been caught doing this 3 times.. Who knows how many other cases. He shouldn't have been let out the first time. This has affected my family and myself. We were close friends of his first victim. I knew this man and it sickness me what he has done. NC needs to do something and protect the rest of the world from him.

Sorry to hear that smithr5. I can feel your pain. My three year old daughter was sexually assualted several times by someone I knew..my husband and her father. Of course he is no longer my husband and my daughter has had no contact with him for over 10 years. These people are sick...disgusting...living among us, and we don't have a clue who they really are. I hope your family heals..it will take time...alot of time.

WHY WAS HE ON PROBATION from the 2009 incident??????!!!!

    That makes no earthly sense!!!

My wife was his first victim. He broke into our house on memorial day weekend 2009 and assaulted her at knifepoint with my 2 year old son in bed with her. I personally knew the man, and he knew I was out of town with our other son. The Durham DA's office failed us and Durham county...again

Might catch some flack for this but isn't it time we started including these kinds of crimes into capital punishment? Yes, no one was killed but irreparable harm was done and I personally think it was just a matter of luck that no one was killed. Leopards don't change their spots no matter how long you cage them. I can understand the need to review older cases due to possible DNA evidence that could clear a person but if there is sufficient modern evidence ( DNA, video, etc . . ) why are we incarcerating? I believe a good hard look needs to be taken regarding the percentage of repeat offenders and asking ourselves if we are better off with our current practice? And for those that would point out the recent SBI issues, let me just say this - I fully believe that anyone withholding any detail of evidence in a criminal investigation needs serious jail time as well. I hope the state of North Carolina resolves this issue completely once and for all, as it is their reputation at stake.

If Durham county had done its job the first time, these 2 families wouldn't be going through the hell my family had to endure....
