Several adults, children hurt after wrong-way crash in Phoenix
Several adults and children were transported to local hospitals after a wrong-way crash in Phoenix early Friday morning.
Posted — UpdatedThe crash occurred on the westbound Interstate 10 near 19th Avenue and involved a U-Haul, which was towing a gold passenger car, and a black sedan, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.
The black sedan was heading eastbound in the westbound lanes on I-10 around 3:30 a.m. when it collided with the U-Haul.
The U-Haul ended up on top of the wrong-way vehicle, requiring fire and medical personnel to extricate several individuals.
The accident involved three adults and four children, DPS said.
Raul Garcia with DPS said the black sedan was being driven by a female and had two car-seat aged children in the backseat. The U-Haul was driven by a male with a female passenger and two children between them. All of their ages are currently unknown.
The female wrong-way driver is in critical but stable condition. The other injuries sustained in the collision do not appear life-threatening at this time.
The crash blocked the HOV lane on westbound I-10 for several hours as DPS investigated the crash.
Garcia said impairment hasn't been ruled out but did note that most wrong-way crashed involve impairment.
